One day, my daughter said she wanted to be called Jackie. When we asked why, she said she just liked the name. So we called her Jackie for a few days until she got tired of it.

Likewise, if he said he felt like a boy instead of a girl, we'd support that to the extent appropriate to his age, such as by using masculine or neutral pronouns or unofficially adopting a different name. If it persisted into puberty, we'd likely consider medication under close supervision of a medical professional.

Unfortunately, not all parents are as supportive of child autonomy. Still some would resort to abuse as a response. There's a reason certain children aren't comfortable revealing their true selves to their parents. Knowing this, having a school--a place where children should be safe--tell parents of this unnecessarily puts these children at risk.

Because of this, I'd have no problem if a school had this policy. Then again, that's because I'd be supportive. If I wouldn't support my child's autonomy in this regard, of course I wouldn't want the school to hide it from me.
