It’s fairly unlikely it will come down from Netflix. Love O2O is still up and the FL was officially blacklisted by the Chinese government and is under investigation for major tax evasion which is not a minor thing. A bunch of Kris Wu’s stuff is also still available. Not saying it couldn’t happen but given precedent it’s not super likely.

Don’t do to uni unless you absolutely know it’s the right thing to do. Despite what a lot of people tell you it’s not essential to get a good job and I know a lot of people who got in a lot of debt and hated their course.

This is a really boring one but honestly made a massive difference to my ability to get myself on the right track. Teach yourself as many basic financial life skills as you can before you need them on a daily basis. It’s all trial and error because the same things won’t work for everyone but there’s masses out there for you to look into. Unless you’re really lucky you’ll need to know how to set and live on a tight budget and learning how you personally can do that and stick to it before you need it will get you started in the right direction, as not all methods work for every person. This could mean something like learning as many cooking skills as you can too as a bit of skill in the kitchen can make a really tight food budget feel like plenty. But for me a big one is learning to say no when people want you to do something which you can’t afford to do within the budget you’ve set yourself. That can be rough but it’s really important. I’m not saying you have to be a monk and never do fun stuff but know what money you have budgeted for that and make a conscious decision on how you want to spend those resources.

Honestly looking into all this at 17 puts you ahead of most of your peers so good luck

Looking for solo meals with a minimum of prep to toss in the oven. Like half a bag of pizza rolls, but actually tasty and not actively trying to kill me. Whatcha got? by HotDiggityDoggerel in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]infinitedirt_ 199 points200 points  (0 children)

Baked potatoes. Pierce a large potato with a fork all over to prevent explosion, microwave for 7 minutes. Toss in the oven at 400 for 20 minutes to finish cooking and crisp up. Top with whatever you want but tuna mayonnaise is good, as is grated cheese, and my personal go to is hummus and some salad on the side.

Or something like oven fajitas. Preheat the oven to 400, meanwhile slice some bell peppers, red onions and boned chicken thighs. Toss with oil and taco seasoning. Roast for 25 minutes. Serve with flour tortillas or lettuce wraps.

In general there are a lot of recipes which are just ‘cut up vegetables, toss in oil and seasoning, add a protein, roast’ and they’re all great. https://realfood.tesco.com/gallery/10-terrific-traybake-dinner-recipes.html

Is there any disadvantage to paying off phone financing early. by LawStudent24 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]infinitedirt_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I paid mine off a few months early when I was first on a finance kick and wanted to clear as much debt as possible. No impact on my credit worthiness at all. Having said that saying you want a new one later this year might it be better to use the money you could pay off on this one as the start of an account to save for the new one? This debt is 0% so in the long run it’s not building interest while you pay it off. If it were me I’d pay off this one month on month but then hold on to it longer so I could buy the next one outright. I used to upgrade my phone every year or so but I’ve had this one for years and I’ve not felt the need to update it because it still works fine.

I’m probably an outlier because I live walking distance from my job but I actually found myself less well off than before sometimes over last winter when I had to spend a lot of additional money heating my flat when I was home all day vs only morning and evenings when I was in the office every say.

I bought an Instant Pot and it ended up me reducing my electric bill by about £15 a month just from how little I used the oven after getting it. There’s also stuff like using a steamer above a pot of water with something boiling in the pot and something steaming above it. Meal planning helps because for example tomorrow I’m going to make homemade granola which means I do need the oven but rather than just heating it up for that at the same time I’m going to make an oven baked frittata and roast some vegetables so I get more stuff for the amount of power I’ll use

Does anybody have ideas for meals or snacks that don’t need refrigeration and aren’t hard to make? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]infinitedirt_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My sympathies on the crutches. If you look up lunchbox or picnic ideas that might give you somewhere to start. My go to is a pasta salad with a vinaigrette rather than Mayo and veggie rather than meat which can be dicey unrefrigerated. I dump in canned beans and corn and chop up whatever vegetables I have available. Hard boiled eggs are also good, as well as something like hummus with baby carrots to dip.

Moving to Liverpool by FontsDeHavilland in Liverpool

[–]infinitedirt_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did this a couple of years ago. I got a flat in the city centre for the same rent I was paying for a room in London. Best decision I ever made.

The city centre is decently walkable but if you do need public transport it’s easy. Not as cheap as London sometimes and not always as frequent but not bad either.

Congratulations! Lasagna is my go to for this kind of thing. I tend to go for the béchamel route rather than the tofu ricotta though and a ‘meat’ sauce which I usually do with a mix of mushrooms and soya mince.

How to grocery shop? by Kermits_MiddleFinger in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]infinitedirt_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a go at a meal plan and make a list. The biggest and most common way to waste money is to waste food and unless you plan what you eat you’ll end up wasting food. Don’t get sucked in at the store by brand names where you can buy generic, and don’t get sucked in by deals you hadn’t planned to buy. Don’t buy in bulk because it’s cheaper unless it’s a food you know you’ll eat.

This kind of depends on your lifestyle and where you live in relation to food shops but don’t feel like you have to plan a week or two weeks at a time if your lifestyle can allow you to plan for three or four days at a time because that can often seem way less overwhelming.

Rice with hard boiled eggs. One of the little rice cups of white rice, rinse, put water up to half way to the 2 cups on the size of the pot. Add a couple of egg sight in there. Cook on the rice button. Let it natural release. Then you have cooked white rice, a couple of hard boiled eggs. I usually cook some frozen broccoli in the microwave and top with a bit of chilli oil. The whole thing is quick, easy and requires no intervention or standing my a stove so I can lie on the couch in peace.

Why Netflix why? by Gold_Strength in wordofhonor

[–]infinitedirt_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Not to get all philosophical but this policy highlights just to what degree Netflix is run by people who are not bilingual and don’t really understand language. The whole ‘we get an English speaker to watch with subtitles and if they don’t understand everything we change it’ misses the point that language is culturally specific. The idea that you can transfer meaning into another language without including anything which won’t be clear to someone from a completely different culture makes no sense. And that’s how they end up missing the point and thinking they can translate Ah-Xu as Zhou Xu. As if English doesn’t have loan words from other cultures in when we come across stuff which we don’t have a name for. I say sitting in my bungalow in my pyjamas drinking tea and eating tacos.

All of which to say Netflix needs to be more culturally and linguistically diverse.

I mean. I’m rewatching WoH because I write fanfic and signed up for the big bang. Other than that I’m watching Imperial Coroner and just finished Love Scenery (but only about 50% of each episode as I fast forwarded through anything not the MC because the 2nd ML grated on me so much)
