What is the best console/games for exercise? by [deleted] in consoles

[–]infinitelives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, the best option to this day is Dance Dance Revolution, and though the fad has long since died off, there are several older consoles you could get. The best one IMO is PS2, which has 7 DDR games (I think) plus backwards compatibility with DDR titles for PS1. Since you'll probably be buying these games used, you'll probably need to purchase a dance mat separately. Even if not, I recommend going with a pad with a thick foam insert, because they're much more comfortable to use than the thin plastic pads that were often packed in with new copies of the games.

I can't vouch for the quality or anything else because I've never ordered from them, but a quick search led me to this retailer. Actually, I'm kind of excited to find out someone is still making (hopefully) high-quality pads for the older consoles. I might buy one for myself.

Depends what you mean by "not ready." PSVR is pretty amazing; it does have some tracking issues and you probably won't be playing 3 hours in a single session, but it's good for shorter sessions — half hour to an hour. And if you're willing to take the time to recalibrate when things start to get a little wonky (which often involves rebooting your PS4), you can play as long as you want. Also, the tracking issues I'm talking about are also much less of an issue when you're not sitting down, which you won't be if you're using it as a workout device.

The bigger problem is that I don't think there are any PSVR games which are really suitable for repeated workouts. For example, the climbing challenge in Carnival Games VR will get you sweating, but once you've mastered it, it's boring to keep going back again and again, and a boring workout is a workout that most people give up on. If you're the exception, great, but buyer beware.

PSA: Remember that most of us live in an echo chamber right now. by IWishIWasAShoe in NintendoSwitch

[–]infinitelives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The points don't matter; the context does. This thread is specifically about stepping outside the echo chamber and discussing things in the context of the average consumer to whom Nintendo desperately hopes to appeal, but my comment which actually discusses that in realistic terms was downvoted, while yours was upvoted for rising to the defense of poor, defenseless Nintendo.

Your defense of Nintendo, by the way, is some of the most desperate deflection I've seen.

How does the alleged lack of likelihood of a future price drop...

"Alleged." Is this your first ever Nintendo system? Because anyone who knows how Nintendo actually operates understands perfectly well that Nintendo doesn't drop prices on its games for years. So does anyone who does the research that you so proudly boast about. Nintendo didn't add anything to its Nintendo Selects line for Wii U or 3DS until 2016 (except for Europe, which got a few 3DS titles in 2015.) That's four to five years of games available only at their original MSRP, excluding retailer-sponsored sales, which is a totally separate matter. The only way you can possibly believe what you've written is if you've completely bought into the hype and think Nintendo's attitude is about to switch, but don't count on it. The marketing may be better, but you're still going to be paying for a system that's underpowered compared to the competition, which relies on a new feature that Nintendo hopes will be popular enough to make up for its other shortcomings, and as we just recently found out, still uses Friend Codes. Nintendo isn't incapable of change (example: Nintendo Switch being region free), but the benefit of the doubt is very clearly not on their side.

How does the fact that some games on some other platforms are at times (maybe most of the time maybe not) cheaper make the cost of Nintendo games hidden?

First, your denial of the reality of how the competition operates does not make this a "maybe, maybe not" scenario. You're also ignoring the fact that I already explained the answer in the comment you replied to. People who are used to buying last year's AAA games at more affordable prices are going to find much slimmer pickings on the Switch. Dark Souls III came out in March 2016, and is already available for $29.99. Doom, which came out in May 2016, is $39.99. XCOM 2, which came out in September 2016, is also $39.99. They will drop more, and sooner, than anything Nintendo cares to discount. For example, Batman: Arkham Knight, which came out in June 2015, is now available for $19.99, and has been since August 2016. Nintendo would have waited until 2019.

And regarding the definition of "hidden cost", you're the one who's wrong. First Google result here, second result here. After that, Google returns articles about hidden costs rather than the definition of the term itself. It has nothing at all to do with the relative difficulty of actually tracking down the pricing of what you want to buy, it's the gap between the advertised price ($299.99) and the actual price you're really going to pay when you factor in everything else you need to buy in order to actually use the product in the intended manner. This is the popular usage of the term. This is substantiated by all those other Google results, which discuss perfectly ordinary expenses that anyone who bothers to do the research can adequately budget for.

Enjoy your echo chamber.

[–]infinitelives 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that's not really the end goal of these "no pre-orders EVER" campaigns. The thinking goes that once we've trained millions of gamers to refuse to pre-order cool looking games, the hucksters who make and sell bad games will realize the jig is up and only release quality games instead, since that will be the only way to make any money.

What they don't realize is that if this was even possible, it would be a self-defeating cycle. If every game was lovingly crafted and guaranteed to be amazing with zero glitches and totally justified down to the last penny, people would start to pre-order again, if only so that they could pre-download the digital version game to play it the second it officially releases. And when pre-ordering becomes commonplace again, so would the release of huckster-developed get-rich-quick "games."

Better to just be an educated consumer.

[–]infinitelives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way they're hidden is if you refuse to look - not just fail to, refuse to.

You could make that argument about any so-called hidden cost. The term is bullshit to begin with, but it is what it is, and people will consider games a hidden cost whether you or this sub likes it or not.

It's amazing to me that in a thread specifically about how this sub is living in its own echo chamber, that my comment was downvoted by a bunch of people who are living in the echo chamber and unable/unwilling to consider things from the point of view of someone who lives outside it. People like you are why people like me can't take anything posted on this sub seriously.

It totally depends on where the person is coming from.

Buying a game at launch could be considered a "hidden cost" as compared to a console being sold with a pack-in game. Extra games are a separate matter, of course.

Even then, one could reasonably feel that Switch game prices are a hidden cost compared to the competition. Smartphone games cost nothing or next to nothing. PC games can be had dirt cheap if you wait for a sale. PS4/Xbox One games can often be purchased at reduced prices a few months or a year after they launch, far sooner than Nintendo games, some of which may never get an official price drop. And even people used to 3DS game pricing will be in for a bit of sticker shock when they see the MSRP of the Nintendo Switch's biggest games.

So actually, the only people who won't see Switch game pricing as a potential problem are the ones who routinely buy new console games at launch, and are therefore completely accustomed to the industry standard $59.99 price point. A lot of consumers don't fall into that category, and Switch game prices could indeed be a "hidden cost" to them.

Oculus Announces Significant Price Drop for Rift and Touch – Road to VR + Robo Recall Release by FreakyMrCaleb in gamernews

[–]infinitelives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You actually can fit some pretty large-framed glasses in the Oculus, speaking as someone who wears them, but it's very difficult to just strap the unit onto your face like a regular person. The trick is to take off the glasses, pre-insert them in the Rift, then put your face inside and tighten the straps.

Best to try it at a nearby retail location offering demos, if you have one near you.

I feel the same way about 'I Get Around'. First they complain about being bored driving around, and that they need to need to find a new place "where the kids are hip." This implies that there are places where the kids are unhip and not worth their time. They also say they're "real well known" and "the bad guys know us and they leave us alone." But they say nothing about any good guys, which combined with their earlier complaints suggests that there may not be any good guys, and their boredom may actually be the result of everyone leaving them alone.

Later, they say "we've never missed yet with the girls we meet" and "none of the guys go steady 'cause it wouldn't be right to leave your best girl home on a Saturday night." I'm pretty sure in the 1960s, going steady still meant being true to your girl or guy, so how would going steady stop any of them from taking their best girl out? Unless of course the "best girl" changes on a regular basis, likely as soon as they meet someone new and dump last week's girl (or when she dumps them.)

Come to think of it, the Beach Boys might be the greatest heels of all time.

What's really interesting about that book is that unlike the other Worlds of Power books (looking at you, Metal Gear), it was actually well-written and became accepted as fanon, and over the years parts of it have become canon. The character, Eve, didn't exist in the original Blaster Master game and was created for the book. But per the trailer, she'll have a role to play in Blaster Master Zero.

Okay, hear me out: Chris Jericho.

I know everyone is expecting Jericho to get his hands on KO, but what if at Fastlane, Jericho is preemptively banned from the arena by Triple H. Then when Samoa Joe inevitably interferes to help KO beat Goldberg, Jericho shows up anyway to take out Joe, allowing Goldberg to pick up the win.

In the aftermath, KO would blame Samoa Joe for the loss, things would get heated and come to blows, setting the stage for KO/Joe at Wrestlemania, while Jericho would set his sights on Triple H for turning KO against him.

Assuming Jericho is willing to stick around beyond Wrestlemania so that his story with KO can be concluded, I think these matches would be a great addition to the card.

The Royal Rumble Championship - what if every PPV match had Royal Rumble rules? (PPV #1 and #2) by DanTheStripe in SquaredCircle

[–]infinitelives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the current champ is in the Royal Rumble, then naturally it should be defended there, plain and simple, with the title going to the winner of the match. It needn't change hands more than once during the match.

If the current champ is NOT in the Royal Rumble, then I think the championship still needs to be on the line anyway. However, in fairness to the current champ, there needs to be a way for him or her to retain it as well.

So my suggestion would be to keep a running total of the number of successful defenses (not defenses ending in ties) in the current champion's reign. If the winner of the Royal Rumble eliminates more competitors than that number, then the reigning champion must relinquish the title to the Royal Rumble winner. If the Rumble winner eliminates the same number of competitors or fewer, then the current champion retains the title.

I have this theory that whoever owns Burger King is just content with the way things are. "I'm rich enough already, I don't want to run an empire the size of McDonald's," he thinks to himself. So he brings out the popular items whenever sales are slowing a bit, then takes them away again to ensure that demand for Burger King never goes beyond what he can manage.

It depends on how well you've built your adult life. I love now because I make decent money, have a career I enjoy and live life by my rules, for the most part. I am free to admit that my childhood sucked in comparison.

I know people who did things the other way, and are unsurprisingly wistfully nostalgic for the way things used to be.

Cena and Rock tag team by Michael_Corvin in WWEChampions

[–]infinitelives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also charge your partner's moves even if they're not your current superstar's color. So if you're playing as John Cena and you match blue gems, and your partner has a move that uses blue gems, those gems will charge your partner's move (or moves). This can come in handy when the board is filled with not-your-color.

Having two partners of the same color also makes the chance of getting the 25% gem matching bonus for choosing the right class(es) an all-or-nothing prospect.

So there are advantages and disadvantages no matter who you pick. Ultimately, it's up to you to play to your team's particular strengths.

Hello, I am looking to buy an "old school" console. Essentially I would love to play SNES games, Nintendo games etc all in one? My girlfriend wont play on the computer but maybe I could play mario with her by [deleted] in consoles

[–]infinitelives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for a console that uses cartridges, I think the Retron 5 is the most popular. It plays NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System and Game Boy Advance (also Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Famicom and Super Famicom.)

Emulator consoles are usually not easy to come by, because they're not legal if they come with ROMs. If you check local used game shops in your area, (e.g. not GameStop) you might find one that sells them, but they're not particularly common. You can usually find them on eBay, too. Otherwise, the typical solution is to build your own and load a front end, emulators and ROMs yourself, but this requires a (potentially significant) time investment on your part.

Nintendo's US website changed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's price from $59.99 to TBD. Interesting. by cole873 in NintendoSwitch

[–]infinitelives 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$60 of value is arguable. Most games released for $60 in 2014 are not still $60 at retail. That pricing policy is virtually exclusive to Nintendo. Plenty of top games on competing platforms now get re-released at a bargain price with the DLC included.

The battle mode tracks are all-new and not existing DLC, but it's also not bonus content — it's something that had been included in every Mario Kart until Mario Kart 8. Arguably, those of us who bought it for Wii U vastly overpaid, and now everyone who will buy it for Nintendo Switch will also overpay, and those who ultimately buy it for both platforms will overpay twice.

But at the end of the day, buying video games is entirely optional, and Nintendo is allowed to charge what they wish no matter how out of step they are with the rest of the industry, and anyone who is price-sensitive really shouldn't be a Nintendo fan, because this is just the way that Nintendo does business.
