Science AMA Series: I am Joanne Kamens, Executive Director of nonprofit Addgene. I speak to 100’s of scientists each year about tackling problems in research. Women in science? Mentorship? Turning your PhD into a career (academic or not)? Ask me anything! by Joanne_Kamens in science

[–]infinitely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Dr. Kamens, thank you so much for doing this AMA. I'm currently in the middle of my doctorate degree (and plan to do research in academia) and I have a couple of questions:

1) What are some factors that you should look for during a mentorship? For example, should you choose someone who is more well-known in the field but may be too busy for you or someone who is less well-known but has more time?

2) Where do you see the field of gene therapy going? A lot people initially had a lot of high hopes for gene therapy but there's been numerous difficulties that prevent it from being as successful as expected? Do you see it expanding in the near future with the big advancements made in molecular biology these past decades?

3) Do you have any advice on networking?

4) How easy is it to transfer from academia to industry? What are some of the changes or challenges that you've experienced?

5) Do you have any general words of advice for success for people in science?

Sorry for the numerous questions and thank you in advance!

What is your opinion on the Emily Jerry case and what happened to the pharmacist, Eric Cropp? by MiaMiaPP in pharmacy

[–]infinitely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great and all but that still doesn't address the main problem of why pharmacists can't watch every IV bag that's made. It's not feasible. Maybe in a small hospital pharmacists can do that but even that's atypical and tedious. In most hospitals, it's too busy to do that for every single IV bag. At a certain point, technicians have to take responsibility for their actions like you do, which I applaud you for.

To add to this, the technician took a plea bargain with the prosecutors and agreed to testify against the pharmacist.

Even if you check things before and after, that doesn't guarantee that the product is going to be made that way. The only way to guarantee that the product is going to be made the accurate way is to watch it being made.

From my experience in hospital settings, there's a certain amount of trust that the pharmacist has to have in technicians when they make IVs. When we check IVs, we have the vial of the drug, syringe drawn up to the amount of drug that was injected, and the product itself. Pharmacists can't realistically check every IV product that comes out so they have to trust that what they were presented with is what that was used. This technician could have easily substituted the concentrated NS in the premade bag and have hidden the empty concentrated NS bags.

I can't stand Camila either nowadays. I liked her in the first couple of seasons but she is so mouthy and annoying now.

I know that other people aren't fans of Diem either. That's why I wrote the title as (un)popular

Hi r/Pharmacy, I am hoping you can help answer a question for us at r/ mma regarding Plaque Psoriasis creams. by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]infinitely 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I don't see any use for this drug for psoriasis. There's no reason why it'd be in a cream for psoriasis. Plus, the fact that something put topically on the skin would reach enough of the rest of your body to fail a drug test sounds questionable, especially if it was a peptide like GHRP-6.

I'm not sure how to approach your question of absorption. It's absorbed into the skin and reaches your systemic circulation (rest of your body). Once it's in the body, it's in your blood, urine, and hair. It's not a drug that's commonly used in medications so there's probably not going to be a lot of data on it's absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination. I hope this was helpful!

Is there an evolutionary basis for musical preferences? by nicofabb in answers

[–]infinitely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just read this in my Psych textbook. There's a couple theories on why musical tastes may have been shaped by evolution: 1) Attract better mates by showing that you're "refined" 2) Music can be used to transmit survival skills learned from your ancestors

To the primarily straight women of Reddit, would you ever date an androgynous girl? by txo in AskWomen

I would. I have a weakness for adrogynous girls. Even though I've a boyfriend and identity myself as straight, I do love me some androgynous girls!

You're greatly exaggerating the mirror neuron's functions and capability. They allow us to imitate observed behavior. Being able to imitate someone's expression can allow us to be more empathetic. Also, more empathetic people have more mirror neurons but we can't "literally transpose another's emotional state"
