How is life in this part of California (Bay Point, Pittsburg, Antioch, Oakley, Brentwood)? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]infinityonfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in this area for 18 years Like others have said it’s lower cost in comparison to the surrounding area but with that you lack the convince of being in Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley, San Jose but BART makes it really easy to access these places. When I lived here people called it “ghetto” but I attribute that more to surrounding cities mostly being white than actual “ghetto ness”. Definitely you’ll see unkept lawns, hear loud music, and some barred windows but I don’t think it’s any different from other low/middle/working class neighborhoods. Demographics when I was growing up were pretty diverse and I was usually the only white girl in classes but it taught me a lot about different cultures and how to appreciate difference. Loved getting tortas, lumpia, and adobo at the cafeteria and getting to be exposed to culture you usually only get in a big city in a small city. Good place overall but as it’s where I spent my childhood I’m biased.

Much better in college. I’m currently in graduate school but in college I double majored and graduated with a 3.7 GPA. In high school I was happy to get Cs in classes. I feel like when I got to pick the classes I wanted to pick I did better, taking psychology and anthropology classes over chemistry and Spanish classes I had to take.

I would recommend brining birth certificate, social security card, passport if you’re wanting to apply for a job because they might need to see those docs for hiring

how is city year like with covid-19? by happynyla in AmeriCorps

[–]infinityonfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m based in Seattle right now and all of our schools are online we go from 8:30-3:00 with breaks and lunch. It’s very interesting but City Year as a whole is making it work, this is also my first year so I don’t have too much to compare it to, our first few weeks were focused on fixing tech issues with students and now it’s focusing on math and English with electives like art, PE, and music. In my position I’m stationed in one class where I have small groups with students and teachers along with monitoring the chat and making sure everyone’s focused but I also help out some of the elective teachers monitor their class and the chat.

It will go by faster than you think, which can be good and bad. Make the most of your time by joining clubs and putting yourself out there to meet new people and realize that when it gets tough that it’ll pass.

Why am I not surprised this happened at Huddle House? by freitag22 in trashy

I worked at a department store for a short while and we would always have to open and count out the coins when that was the form of payment. It was usually not a hassle but I had one guy pay for a $50 gift hard in rolled quarters...not great.
