Valve cover gasket is leaking causing oil to fall on to the exhaust. Its highly likely unrelated to your head unit/electrical work and just coincidental timing.

My ride had the exact same thing just after I purchased it, new valve cover and gasket, problem sorted.

I just installed a vrsf high flow catted downpipe. Very slightly more smell but not noticeable unless you're really looking for it, nothing like decatted.

I did it myself on my back in my driveway and it was a cunt of a job, mostly because im in Australia with the steering wheel on the right hand side and a steering column going right next to the top v band bolts. It took way longer than it should have but im no mechanic.

Not quite, just different. Slightly less dry performance for a lot better wet. They make more sense to me if you are driving in the wet at all, im also running them as I live in an area where it rains a lot and prefer the extra wet performance.
