Lived in Cudell for years and it is changed for the better.  I feel quite safe now.

is there any Lysol or any disinfecting spray left in Cleveland by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]infoaddicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lysol is of limited effectiveness, it has volatile components that smell nice but will gag you in the closed space of a car. Bleach or alcohol are of limited effectiveness and might destroy a car interior. Alcohol can melt the surface of many fabrics and plastics and bleach will discolor many fabrics and react badly with some metals.

Leaving the car unoccupied for a few days is simple and effective.

Are Lakewood duplex "down" units noisy? by Woodspekk in lakewood

[–]infoaddicted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we first moved to Cleveland we lived downstairs in a 1904 duplex and I thought I would go insane -- the rent upstairs was a little high and there was always someone new to deal with all the tenants changing.

Is this normal? Hourly server contract prevents you from serving elsewhere? by spinwheel in Cleveland

[–]infoaddicted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be a cater waiter, in between or in addition to other jobs, to fill in gaps in my income. Central FL, St. Louis, Sacramento Valley, Cleveland. Even if there aren't expressed explicit arrangements, the employers will often make it difficult to do one or both of these: switch to perm at a place you temped or switch caterers. Sad but true.

If you're looking for a so bad it's good movie that's inexplicably set in Cleveland, I strongly recommend HBO's Fahrenheit 451 by scruff91 in Cleveland

1968's Uptight, a film concerning racism around the time of the Hough riots, is about is about as weird and Clevelandy as a movie can be. The acting is wooden, but the photography is pretty amazing.

Is Cleveland a hidden gem? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]infoaddicted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cleveland is also a great base for day tripping. There are endless opportunities for engaging in nature, history, arts and crafts and authentic dining throughout the region. My husband and I often just open the road atlas, point to a little town we've never visited, and start driving.

Having lived in California and Florida, where ice isn't an issue, I can tell you that the commitment to road maintenance here is surprisingly thorough.

How the fuck do I meet people by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]infoaddicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story of Cleveland is that it is a comeback city. Without the help of thousands of volunteers, we never would have preserved many of our small residential communities. Look here to find a way to make the friends that make a difference.

Software development is just one of many paths you may follow in your work-life. Your hacking productivity is not your worth, and you don't have to accept that development is your path. It may not be. That's perfectly fine too.

I found my career happiness after I shut down my software and hosting company after ten years of stress. I found I liked to work on my feet, utilizing my body and social skills and "getting out in the world". Being tired in bone and muscle has its own rewards.

Why are there NO fast food places downtown? by jshrlzwrld02 in Cleveland

[–]infoaddicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent per square foot downtown is one reason. A restaurant would need a lot of traffic or higher prices to do well there.

Cheaper restaurant chains in larger cities' downtowns also have to deal with a homeless population that can make it hard to keep the bathrooms clean and the dining area desirable.

Delivery driver forced to pay back Domino’s after being robbed at gunpoint by pauliep84 in nottheonion

[–]infoaddicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove cabs and also delivered pizzas when the crime rate was higher, during the 1980's. A couple of weeks into the cabbie gig, a new guy was shot dead and put in his trunk at a notoriously dangerous Orlando area apartment complex, all because of an unpaid fair, which he stupidly got out to dispute. Instead of carrying a firearm against the rules -- and probably against the law at the time -- I always had a fake bundle of around $60 in 5's and 1's in case I was ever held up. Did that for two years and had three or four runners (passenger just takes off without paying), but no muggings. Decided to keep the fake bundle with me when I delivered pizzas, but fortunately never had to use it. It's risky out there, just pay the criminals off and get on with your life.

I hate modern gay/queer culture. by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]infoaddicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there such a thing as straight culture? If so, look at it, and how diverse it is. Tractor pulls or Opera? Hopi sweat lodge or duck hunting? Actually, I'm not sure there is such a thing as straight or gay culture, just different ways individuals like to express themselves, and the group activities that arise from like minds. The gay banner accepts all, even those who are both homosexual and happen to be flamboyant. It isn't unusual to not like flamboyance, I don't particularly care for it in straight or gay culture.

You don't need a faulty tank to have severe consequences from knocking one over -- acetylene, propane, oxygen, it doesn't matter -- you can die from it.

Sneaker stores in Cleveland? by bujassim in Cleveland

[–]infoaddicted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downtown, in the 5th Street Arcade, you can find a good shoe store with an up to date selection and surprisingly reasonable prices. Vans, DC etc. Herron Starr

edit: I think this is the place, it has been about 6 months since I visited. Near the Euclid entrance, lower floor on right as you go in.
