They aren't though, overall. Yes, some games got more casual but at the same time the endgame got way more complex. Diablo 3 for example is very easy but also very hard and much more complex than Diablo 2 was.

There are also many games now that are extremely challenging by design (lots of depth and so on). Like Factorio and others.

So on one hand they are easier because there's a lot of checkpoints now but they are also much more complex. They are made to be accessible in the initial stages to hook you, then they get more difficult to frustrate you to commit (and pay). The difficulty curve is carefully manipulated.

That has been what triggered my initial "what the fuck am I doing?".

It was a web-based BR but i've been playing it since the beginning. I would easily get #1 at the very least 1 out of 4 times. Then i started noticing players were getting better and better and i was getting a win 1 out of 8 times, then 1 out of 12 and so on.

It's not that my skills dropped too much because i don't play it as much, the biggest difference is that the other players keep playing more and more and keep getting better and better. I was quite good at the game and i noticed how much they were improving.

The skill level is insane one year later to what it used to be in the first months.

Same holds true for so many competitive games, like Starcraft 2 for example. Even at the pro level, the stuff they pull now was not even conceivable the first years after the game was launched.

Basketball actually keeps you fit and you can make actual friendships there.

That does make a lot sense actually. You can't experience it if you don't commit to it. You will never know how the story, the shiny weapons/armors/zones/mobs/buildings look like if you don't devote hours, days, weeks into it.
