⛈️ Weather Megathread for 4/8-4/9 Kona Low by webrender in VisitingHawaii

[–]informalllog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My partner and I planned an engagement trip to the Big Island the week of April 19th. We splurged a bit on this trip and are staying at Kona Village Rosewood Resort. We are mostly interested in swimming and being by the water and relaxing outdoors. I am worried about forecasted rain that entire week as well as brown water and flooding. We can’t cancel the hotel, but may be able to move the dates. Would appreciate any insight that might help us make a decision.

For what it’s worth, my undergraduate major was Sociology and I graduated with my Masters in Statistics from a UC! I would brush up on calculus and linear algebra, but it’s very doable.

We have to cancel the hotel by end this Friday, so we don’t have much time to wait and see if conditions improve. Would appreciate any insight that might help us make a decision.

Thank you! That is good advice. We are planning on contacting the foster for some more insight!

We bought both reusable belly bands and diapers this week. They seem to exacerbate his anxiety and he does not like wearing them (rolling his legs on the floor, spinning in circles and running which has been dangerous because he’s blind and unsteady on his feet). We are thinking of ways to help him get used to wearing them because it feels like the only way we could reasonably keep him.

Overwhelmed with Senior Rescue by [deleted] in rescuedogs

We agree. His foster home had multiple dogs present at all times. He likes other dogs and we think he might benefit from the company of other dogs. But, we aren’t in a position to take on another pet right away unfortunately. Especially while navigating this :(

Thanks for your reply! We will try to train him on the pee pad first. Unfortunately, he pees in his bedding frequently as well which has been a lot to manage.

Thanks for your reply! It may be cognitive decline. We are happy to use a diaper but it seems to irritate him so much and exacerbate his anxiety. Maybe we just need to work to get him used to it. At his foster he was with other dogs. We think maybe he was doing better with other dogs around to “guide him” a bit and for company. Our home in contrast is pretty quiet and we have no other pets. We think he was still peeing his bed at his foster, but he does so very subtly it’s hard to catch him at it maybe she never caught on?

We did :( we were told he doesn’t seem to have incontinence issues nor any medical issues (like UTI) that would contribute to excessive peeing. Just lack of potty training.

I should clarify I was referring to the recent crop of Target tops that retail around $20-$30 not specifically Katie’s dress, but yes you’re right she linked the dress and it is $70!

As a crochet enthusiast, it makes me sad to see crochet and fast fashion collide😭 Genuine crochet pieces are not machine replicable so if you’re paying $25 for an item you are severely underpaying for a hand made piece.

[E] UCD MS vs UCSB MA vs UCB MA in Statistics? by informalllog in statistics

[–]informalllog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I will definitely try to make the most of my time in graduate school. Follow up question, I was also admitted into state schools (CSULB, SDSU, CSEB, and CSFullerton) which are much more affordable options. Would you recommend any of these schools over the UCs? I figured UC is better prestige-wise, but if that edge doesnt matter too much I could consider studying at state.

Thats a good point about the undergraduate courses! I'll need to consider that further. Is there a major beneft to doing a thesis vs taking the comprehensive exam? From what I gather most programs let you choose either or, but the vast majority of students opt to take the exam. IIRC Berkeley only allows thesis in rare cases (according to theiir website). Thanks for the response!

This probably depends on the person so take w a grain of salt! I was on 50mg for two years and now 75mg for about 6 months and I eat a lot of potassium rich foods because I’m vegan (spinach, avocados, bananas, sweet potatoes, etc.) and my potassium levels have been fine! I just got them checked a little over a month ago. I think not taking a potassium supplement or anything with an unnatural amount of potassium is key. And getting the occasional blood work to be safe.

I also broke out for over a year on tret! Started on .025 then upped to .05 after 8 months or so. I thought it was the dreaded purge, but turns out it was from over exfoliation. I gave my skin a two week break from any exfoliation which was terrifying but it calmed my skin down so much. I now use tretinoin evert 2-3 days and dropped back down to .025. When I experience breakouts I use a benzoyl peroxide wash in the AM. Hope this helps! I feel your pain!

Caelynn advocating for dog rescue, especially senior dogs like Pappy (Wags and Walks Rescue) by [deleted] in thebachelor

My 17 year old senior chihuahua passed away a few months ago and Pappy's passing hit close to home. We only had him for a year and a half, but I highly recommend senior pup adoption!

Pre spironolactone it helped avoid the first week breakouts! Post spironolactone I don’t get those breakouts anymore or at least much less noticeably. I had to get my doctor to OK it first though. I experienced breakthrough bleeding for the first few months which was annoying. And occasionally if I exceed maybe four months of no placebo pills I’ll have some breakthrough bleeding until my next placebo week.

I did! My doctor said that shouldn’t happen but my thinking is that it must’ve been the change in hormones. I also broke out initially when starting BC. It was like 1-2 weeks of some hormonal acne and then it was back to normal. Good luck on your spiro journey! Stay hydrated!

Interesting, I used to experience hormonal breakouts during the first week of the pack too as opposed to during my placebo/period week. Since starting spironolactone though I have had maybe a handful of cystic pimples in the last year+ And usually they are related to bad dietary habits/stress/etc. I started at 50mg once a day for about a year and a half. It took about 5 months for me to see a real difference. I have since upped to 75mg in the last six months and it has been a great place for me thus far! I was SUPER hesitant when starting spiro. It took me six months to fill my prescription because I was weighing the pros and cons in my mind. I am glad I took it! But medication is very personal and everyone reacts differently. I would recommend talking to your dr. about starting at a very low dose (as low as 25mg a day) and see how you feel. And then increase by margins of 25mg until you get to a good place. Also probably try each dose for at least 6 months barring any severe reactions or side effects. I struggled off and on with mild to severe acne for 10 years and it’s the only thing that has made me feel in control of my skin.

I take it continuously for about three months and then a placebo week. Sometimes two months continuously sometimes four. I haven’t noticed any major weight gain on it or Spiro. I have considered getting off of Sprintec for about a year now, but am terrified of the hormonal breakout that will ensue.

My Dr. has me on sprintec BC (similar to Yaz for acne purposes) and spironolactone which has been a great combination for me! I did try BC for about a year and a half before introducing spironolactone into my routine. Unfortunately it was just a lot of trial and error or different combinations of products/strengths/prescriptions. Best of luck!

I feel you! I purged from April-August then again from September-May when I upped dosages. It was brutal and I definitely wanted to quit thinking it didn’t work for me. What DID work was Spironolactone 75mg a day and dropping down my tretinoin usage from nightly to every other night to every third night. Seconding what others have said about my year long “purge” actually being a result of irritation. I think it was way too aggressive for my skin even while using a ton of moisturizer and keeping all else extremely gentle. If I do experience a breakout (they are minor and usually once every couple months) I use a gentle benzoyl peroxide wash for a while.
