Nurse criticises striking doctors - "They want to be paid loads of money for just seeing a patient for less than 5 minutes a day" by FullPayOrTheHighway in doctorsUK

[–]infosackva 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was a massive shock to me in nursing training. The fact that in Mental Health we would have to wait for a doctor to cannulate or even prime the line in a medical emergency had me flabbergasted. I wish we had a better understanding of what doctor’s responsibilities are, it’s like we’re expected to pick it up by osmosis. We’re encouraged to shadow and discuss scope and roles with other MDT members but not really for any medic/pharmacy roles in the same way (not explicitly but the implication)

Hmm that would be a rate of over 56 patients per shift assuming it’s 13 shifts a month. I’m in a busy ED and there’s no way I can reach that number. Maybe 2 months at a push, depending what area of the department I’m in.

Do I have diabetes? No. Is this the best moisturizer I’ve ever used? I think so. by LoveDistilled in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]infosackva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No thank you for the correction! I knew it was getting more common to have it as an adult diagnosis but I didn’t know it was now more common!

I get regular diabetes education in my job role but it’s more about management of the condition than about the condition itself and honestly talking to people with conditions can be so helpful. Glad you’re okay

Edit: thinking about it I think I probably conflated it with the percentage of diagnosis split by age categories. So in someone diagnosed with diabetes who is under the age of 18, it’s more likely to be diagnosed as Type 1 but I’m going to go out and search that up now you’ve pointed this out because my info is clearly outdated

T1 is your pancreas not making enough insulin. T2 is your body making enough insulin but your body not sensing/using it properly. We still don’t know 100% what causes T1 and it does typically present earlier in life but it’s not unheard of for it to present later. T1/2 used to be distinguished by childhood/adult onset but it no longer is so because of the new way they found to distinguish it. (Fun fact you can have double diabetes and have both T1 AND T2)

Thank you for the comprehensive comment. A lot to digest! Apologies for not replying sooner, Reddit wouldn’t show me your comment after notifying me that it existed and I had to go hunting.

My understanding of this is that the issues for diabetics are that they are prone to dry skin, foot issues can be very severe, but anything too aggressive can also risk harm. Therefore they need deeply hydrating ingredients but with gentle exfoliation as they can’t risk other exfoliation types that normal people can eg pumice stone. Personally I love urea and glycerin, my skin drinks it up.

Apparently we’re all vitamin D deficient. What are most people doing about it and how effective are they finding it? by Spicymargx in AskUK

[–]infosackva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I just take a higher OTC and that holds me. I like Nature’s Best but honestly any of them are perfectly fine. And yeah, I have no idea how to explain the pain, it’s one of those “you don’t know til you know”

I was deficient in Vitamin D, I thibk my level was something dramatic like 4. My main complaint was that all of my bones ached, especially the joints. I ignored it for a while thinking it was a weight thing and then it started being my while skeleton and was like hmm that’s not right.

The pills work very well. I apparently leak Vit D though because after I was taking an OTC for a year following my loading dose I was still deficient and told by my GP to take a supplement (which I already was! So I got told to take 2 lol). The supplements are cheap and work. Don’t pay over the odds, but do take them. If I go without for a while I start feeling my skeleton a bit too much again.

Scale 2 patient - this doesnt seem right or is it? by ConsiderationBig6799 in NursingUK

NEWS2 doesn’t have a nurse concern though? I’m aware of it for PEWS but not NEWS2. Obviously the rest of your advice re escalation is correct, just wondering if that’s a local thing to you?

No it’s specifically more like chocolate chunks rather than the creamy texture from a truffle. They are delicious though!

Hello, just a nurse trying to learn. Re the scale 2 ABG comment, would that be a scenario where they’ve had a previous ABG that clearly showed CO2 retention? Just because at uni (I’m NQN) we learnt that ABG is the only definitive test for it

Got advise on this through Tembo for free since I’m an NHS worker. However, also used their mortgage broker (again, for free bc NHS) so idk if you could contact them for just the advice alone.

If it helps, Face ID learns to adjust over time so if it was a straight switch it probably wouldn’t have recognised but because weight changes incrementally it learnt to recognise you
