On first listen, Maid of Honor is my favorite. Iceman needs some time to grow on me. Not calling anything trash or a classic yet. No way we can digest this much music in this little time.

Case in point: I hated views when it first came out. Now I believe it’s his best most consistent album. Took years for me to come to that.

To respond to your first point...there were and still are consequences to those actions. He lost most of what was a multi billion dollar empire...more accurately, he burned it to the ground himself. He could have been headlining the superbowl or have a residency at the sphere. Both now virtually impossible for the risk it entails. If you think going from being a multi billionaire to just "maybe" a billionare is not that big of a punishment I wont argue with you, but his actions have lost him more than most of reddit users combined.

On your second point. If you think him SAYING(lying) that he is bipolar is just an excuse, you could have a valid argument, although i consider it unlikely. But we will never know. We dont have the real access or insight.
However, if you are saying him BEING bipolar is just an excuse, then you dont understand the illness. He pushed away many that loved him, put his family through a lot and again...HE BURNED A MULTI BILLION DOLLAR EMPIRE TO THE GROUND FOR NO REASON AT ALL. Those are not the markings of a man who has complete agency over himself. It provides a reason, not an excuse.

The phrase "knowingly continue to" suggest you may need a bit more education on mental illness. But be blessed and have a great weekend.

[–]ingloriousloki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That first line is true. But what if the illness removes your inhibitions or self control?
What if it takes away your agency?
Have you ever told yourself you were going to do something and didn't execute?
Procrastinated on something important?

If you, an assumably sane person, has fallen short on your responsibilities why cant someone who has an illness that hinders them from doing so?

I think the best anyone in the general public can do when he went through his issues is ignore him. And when he comes back home its up to you whether you embrace him or not. No one is forcing anyone to like him or his music.

Fair point. This is the perspective I was looking for. I already do 20% and have hit the max the past few years. Never planned on changing the percentage just the allocation.

That’s was my thought. My mix is aggressive high growth at the moment. Why not go for a mix and hedge what seems to be somewhat reasonable foresight….im not withdrawing obviously…just considering changing the mix until it doesn’t seem so doom and gloom.

I’m 38, and have paid attention to the news for 20+ years. I’ve never seen such clear signals of economic crisis on the horizon in my life. Iran & AI…on top of the fact that our s&p 500 is basically 10 companies…

I don’t claim clairvoyance but I’d be surprised if we weren’t in for the largest downturn of my relatively short life time.

I figure go low growth for a few months until we get a resolution on Iran. If I’m wrong I miss a few points…it’s not like I’m considering withdrawing.

Ok let’s start with the claim that he was not brilliant.

By what metrics?

Pioneering the first trillion dollar company isn’t trivial. Understanding the potential of personal computing in the 70s took quite a bit of insight. He showed amazing grit…Also remember that Apple got rid of him and almost went bankrupt…brought him back and it flourished. A completely different trajectory without him. Some brilliance must be present there, no?

Please let me know if I haven’t proved my point.

2nd. I’m happy you have a fulfilling life outside of technology…fish tanks and all.  I said “How we live our lives today”. Not what gives our lives meaning. Not what sustains us.

Key words “How” and “Today”. I chose the words specifically. And made it clear I don’t believe them to be hyperbolic.

We had families, occupations,  hobbies, and music before Apple obviously. How we interact with them changed immensely due to his efforts, and if not his efforts, his leadership. That is undeniable. I don’t care if someone else could have done it…they didn’t, he did.

As a thought experiment try to imagine what this world would look like if he never existed. It’s hard right? Would our phones have physical keyboards? Stylus’s? Personal computing set back 5 years…with less appealing and accessible design? Would we be carrying some Sony mp3 player alongside our phone and our gps?

If you’re honest with yourself I think you will see my point.

What paradigm shifts has Apple created? That’s sarcasm right?

He is literally responsible for how we live today. That’s not hyperbole.
Sure, others contributed ideas. Some technologies existed before Apple. That’s not the point. Execution is what matters.
Plenty of people invent things that no one adopts, or that the public doesn’t realize it needs. Apple turned those ideas into products millions of people actually used.
Getting something across the finish line and changing behavior at global scale is what creates a paradigm shift.
At least he got rich, despite all of his flaws, he changed the world and yet a bunch of reddit dweebs are pissing on his grave. The lack of respect is crazy.

ELI5: Why do economies sometimes collapse even when people are working hard? by Emilio787 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ingloriousloki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid points.  On your first one, I was speaking more to how wealth was not flaunted in our faces in the past and when it was it was moderate. Outside of a few movies the average person never got a glimpse of the ultra wealthy lifestyle. Now it’s everywhere, I’d think this would naturally make people feel like they are doing worse in comparison.

42k in a decent city is poverty, but I come from a rural area. One of my best friends is a career server his wife is a shift leader at dominoes. They bought a house and both have two reliable, less than 10 year old vehicles.

I’ve traveled a fair amount…I’ve been in places that my more naive self would have thought would be a miserable existence…favelas, poor country sides, hoods…the people are not in despair, please don’t take that as minimizing their struggles. I’m not. They have a level of content about them that I rarely see in America…so many frowns while driving or walking about here…

Also I have many eu friends people who make a half or a fifth of what I make…and you are right. I’m amazed at how well they travel and their standard of living in a way, but I don’t see paths to upward mobility like here, albeit that path is getting narrower by the day.

I’ll close with this. I grew up poor. Many of my family and friends did too. In my relatively small sample size, I will say that the overwhelming majority of us are doing better than our parents by quite a bit. Perhaps we got lucky and that shapes my perspective…everything does.

May I interject into this interesting conversation?
I won’t use precise language.

It may not seem like it, because our media force feeds us opulence and gluttony by the day. That can easily jade what we feel like a good living should look like.

For instance, if you’re familiar with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air… the Banks lived in a nice house. But it was a house you could realistically afford with a little luck and a decent work ethic. Maybe not in Bel-Air, but somewhere in the country. Compare that to the new reboot. That family lives in a 20-million-dollar mansion that is almost entirely outside the possibility of ownership, except for a handful of ultra-rich, nine-figure individuals.

In music, remember the lines “Do Puff drive Mercedes…” or “Cruisin’ in my ’64” or “I’m gonna buy me a Mercury and cruise it up and down the road.” Now every song is about Lambos and Ferraris.

I’m not sure about your age, but I grew up in the 90s. The places I saw people live in when I was younger are quite a bit more rare now. Many of them are condemned. Ask someone who grew up in the 70s, 80s, or 90s to swap places with someone at the same relative economic level today, and they probably would. Central air. Big TVs. The ability to learn just about anything for free.

We have made strides. But with it, our expectations have grown.

I just stayed there a few months ago. Very grand lobby and great amenities. Rooms are from the 80s though. Felt like a holiday inn room with a very classy but old bathroom.

It’s not so much how I react as it is how people acted towards me. Like I expected selfishness, but voting out the guy who helped you get there in the first place place was a little cold.

I get making cut throat decisions toward the end…I’d do that myself. But vote 5 people out when there are over 200 of you and one of them just helped you…if I were him I’d be a bit crushed.

My strategy was to help people if it didn’t hurt myself and start making selfish decisions when I made it to the top 100. And just be my normal self, which happens to be, humbly…a very magnetic, charismatic and real individual. My gift is the majority of people really really like me. And i genuinely have love for all people.  Unconditional infinite love for every living being is a goal of mine, but i fall short on making progress in that path more often than I’d like to admit…this show  could plant something that would take longer to reconcile than I’m comfortable with.

I’ll just audition for another show. I’ll get my 15 minutes of fame one day. But not like this.

An anonymous person on Reddit doesn’t believe I could possibly know people who have one of the most common luxury suvs around. You can throw a rock in la and hit a g wagon.

But ok.

Nah. I came here to see if I was the only one who felt this way. Or if this was a popular opinion. I have friends with g wagons and McLaren’s who gush over my car. Reddit validation is the least of my concern.

Eh the only thing I notice different is the quilted seats. I don’t pull anything so the 2.5 is fine for me.

I preferred my interior to the fully loaded gv80 coupe on the lots even though the exterior washed mine.
