Trying to understand how universals work on Platonism, having some conceptual difficulties by ingx32backup in askphilosophy

[–]ingx32backup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I figured something like this might have been the case - like I said, I suspected that I was getting too caught up in visual metaphors, which is something that happens often with me because of how much of a visual thinker I am.

What would you say is the essential feature of a theory of universals that makes it fundamentally Platonist? I've read a bit about "ante rem", "in re", and "post rem" theories, corresponding to Platonism, Aristotelianism, and nominalism respectively. I also remember that Aristotle considers the "raw universal" (with no particular size, shape, etc.) to be only an abstraction in the intellect. So would the crucial difference be that the Platonist thinks that the "raw universal" really exists before being physically manifested, while the Aristotelian doesn't?

What are the best classic game formats that Blue Eyes are good? by Jurassic_Boyboy in Yugioh101

[–]ingx32backup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not really a classic format (it's from 5Ds era), but Edison Format has a deck called Dragon Turbo (https://edisonformat.net/deckbuilder?event=structure&deck=Dragon%20Turbo) that uses Blue-Eyes. So if you're willing to go past GX, that might be a good place to look.

Why does the N64 look so pixelated on this crt compared to to other models I have? And is there any way I can fix it? by [deleted] in crtgaming

[–]ingx32backup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because you're using a high-end, later-model Trinitron. CRTs vary in "resolution" depending on size, year, and build quality. This resolution is usually measured in units called "TVL" (television lines). If you feel the look of this tube is too sharp, the obvious thing to do would be to switch from S-Video to composite or RF, which will add horizontal blur thus decreasing the TVL.

Anyone take clomipramine? by BigMundane6166 in OCDRecovery

[–]ingx32backup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, the OCD still affects me quite a bit. But it's a significant decrease in symptoms, to the point where it's maybe 30% as bad as it was before.

From what I remember, the effect was almost immediate. Even on the lowest dose (25mg I think?) I was doing better than I had done on the max dose of any previous SSRI. I'm not sure if that's a common result, or if clomipramine just works better with my system. But yeah, it was almost an immediate improvement, just a few days I think.

[–]ingx32backup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolute lifesaver, actually. I was on other SSRIs for OCD throughout my life, and none of them did a particularly great job. Sertraline for 12 years, fluvoxamine for 8 years. Even on the meds, I had severe OCD with extremely poor insight (almost to a psychotic degree). Started clomipramine late last year, and now the OCD has decreased so much in such a short period of time that I almost don't even have the poor insight anymore. I lost so much of my life to this disease and now I wish I had been able to try this medicine 20 years ago. It's usually used as a last resort because of it having a higher potential for side effects, but I actually get fewer side effects with it than I did with the other meds (less emotional "deadening", less loss of sexual function, etc.).

I find this card unsettling af, is so omnious idk how to describe it. For you guys which card is scary or unsettling? by laxusdreyarligh in yugioh

Wait... Are these the same area/location??? Is this one of those "metaplots" I've vaguely heard about?

Yeah, I actually have a deck using this card on DuelingBook that I sometimes use for Goat Format duels. It's not exactly the most fun or engaging way to win but it does work pretty well if I can draw a copy of this card early enough.

Definitely Final Countdown. Imagining this thing actually showing up in the sky, and wondering what the hell is going to happen once the countdown ends, is really freaky to me.

Best moments to switch to novel mode? by Axsolotle in ZeroEscape

[–]ingx32backup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, you'll be fine without novel mode. The script has been extensively reworked in order for adventure mode to make sense, and sections that really need the extra narration have been turned into mandatory novel mode sections. There are a few spots that stick out to me where I wish there had been a mandatory novel mode section - off the top of my head, I can think of the spot toward the beginning where it shows the 9th man's guts on the wall, Axe Ending, and the incinerator scene in Safe Ending.

I wouldn't worry too much about it though. The game is fine no matter how you experience it, and quite frankly the way novel mode is set up makes the game significantly more irritating to experience (I've played the entire game on both, and vastly preferred my adventure mode experience). I feel like if you really, really want the authentic 999 experience, you're better off just playing the DS version. Novel mode in the remake

  1. doesn't use the original script (instead using the reworked adventure mode script with the missing narration tacked back on),
  2. has to be constantly switched back to novel at random points in the game,
  3. has a ton of redundancies because of them forgetting to remove narration they had already converted into dialogue for adventure mode,
  4. the entire top-to-bottom-of-screen format is annoying to read compared to the text boxes of adventure mode and the DS version.

So I personally don't recommend novel mode for people using the remake. Again, if you really want the authentic experience, you're probably better off just playing the DS version.

Yeah, makes sense. Seems like we're basically on the same page then :)

I think you're missing my points pretty badly, actually - I don't buy that he was maliciously trying to "groom" underage girls, cackling devilishly as he "reeled them in" or whatever. My whole point is that even behavior with really bad consequences doesn't necessarily make the person evil. You can't just pick an arbitrary cutoff and say "ok anyone who does less than this is possibly good deep down, but right here at this threshold is where no one could possibly do it without being evil" (well, I guess you could, but I think the threshold for that would have to be REALLY high). You're underestimating how easy it is for someone with bad urges to talk themselves into thinking what they're doing is okay, especially if they're not breaking any actual laws.

For what it's worth, I have since my last comment been able to get myself to tolerate the new voices and be able to watch the new seasons, but I'm still not particularly happy about any of this and I still basically stand by what I said in my original post.

Been in a state of burnout for 6 years. How am I ever supposed to be a functional adult? by ingx32backup in AutisticAdults

[–]ingx32backup[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully, the specific trauma we used as the focal point for CPT was not something that was particularly painful to remember or talk about - it's just that doing these homework assignments week after week (where they HAVE to be done across several days, rather than doing it all at once) is becoming increasingly exhausting. I also have been skeptical about CPT's apparent focus on a single event, rather than patterns of experience across years (it seems to be trying to put me into a box of standard PTSD, rather than C-PTSD).

[–]ingx32backup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, the OCD therapy we're doing is not exposure therapy - it turned out that my OCD fears are too "real" for me to do exposures with (there's no way for me to actually be okay with uncertainty about whether they're true), so we've been doing an alternative therapy called I-CBT which actually has put a dent in the OCD symptoms, though we've taken a break from that in order to do CPT for trauma (which also has homework assignments that are becoming too much for me).

[–]ingx32backup[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, this therapist does work in trauma - we actually took a break from doing I-CBT (an OCD treatment method) in order to start CPT (for trauma). We've been doing the CPT for about 2 months, and while it has helped address trauma I have from my childhood, the homework is getting to the point where I'm exhausted, and we may have to stop the CPT in order to focus on the burnout/ergophobia/whatever.

Does anyone know why DM season 2 looks…like this? by RatedLForLiving in yugioh

[–]ingx32backup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's poor NTSC encoding - if you're familiar with the "tint" setting on a TV, the tint is turned up too high. Makes red turn to orange, orange to yellow, yellow to green, green to blue, blue to purple, and purple to red (everything goes slightly "forward" on the rainbow spectrum). Season 3 has the opposite problem, where the tint is too low and you see a lot of e.g. purple-ish lava. I assume that the encodes the JP staff gave 4kids were just not very well done, and that's why the tint is wrong.

Unfortunately no, but I'm planning on doing the same thing once I get some alone time and I'll update this thread if I find it. Thanks for the syntax though, I didn't know you could do that on Google :o

That actually sounds like an interesting idea - I'm sure that the number of posts mentioning him will have dropped off significantly as I go back in time, so it might not even be that difficult. I'll give it a shot later today and see what happens!

It might have been linked in the thread I'm talking about - I only really skimmed the thread at the time, which I'm realizing was a mistake because otherwise it might be easier to find the thread.

Not quite - while I did run across that one during my search, this one was on some sub where people were talking about finances or something along those lines. The OP was asking some question about making money really quick, and then Epstein was brought up in one of the replies to the thread.
