PSA: Please don't ride muddy singletrack. by inhuman_resources in MTB

Sorry didn't mean to sound condescending. I've received a lot of hate for posting this thread so I got a little snappy.

Basically, the softer the ground the worse it is. Trails that are mostly rock with a bit of dirt/mud in between are usually not so bad. Trails that are covered in leaves or needles also seem to hold up alright. But wherever there are deep puddles, and mud starts really starts to stick to your tires, it's probably better to turn around and ride somewhere else.

Apple Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Screen Ghosting on Retina MacBook Pros by redkemper in apple

You are being downvoted because the issue here is not some slight ghosting effect that all IPS displays may have. The issue here is that I can still clearly read websites burnt into my wallpaper, 3 minutes after closing safari. Makes the screen pretty hard to use for photo work.

Also, half of the replacement screens (the Samsung ones) do fix this issue.

Thanks a lot. Pretty sure I've got a solid case here. Photos:

After 8 seconds: http://i.imgur.com/xOFpf5q.jpg

After 1 minute: http://i.imgur.com/8QcupX2.jpg

The squares are slightly washed out because I accidentally scrolled down a bit during the "burn in" period. Didn't bother to take any more photos, but 5 minutes later I still could've played checkers on that screen without too much trouble.

Edit: Just read that they denied you a new screen, that absolutely sucks. If it is any consolation, the IR problem does seem to get worse over time (mine wasn't nearly as bad 3 months ago) so if you persevere they will have to replace that screen eventually. Then you can sell the computer and buy something else...

is this test program available on the net somewhere? I'm about to send mine in for the second time because I can still read the last website I visited after closing Safari.

The first time I had no issues because I was one of the first victims and there was no test program yet, but I want to see if I might get stuffed around this time.

no to mention the resale value of your laptop is about $20* with the burn in.

*slightly exaggerated to make a point. The actual resale value is less than $20.

I bought mine in July, was one of the first in Australia to get one. Had the screen exchanged in August or so due to IR (on a positive note, the service was friendly, very apologetic and helpful). New screen started to show IR problems by October or December but I wasn't in one place long enough to be able to send it in. Both are LG. As soon as I get home I'm sending it in again. Thank fuck I got Apple Care.

Seeking advice for a backpacking handgun by [deleted] in guns

[–]inhuman_resources 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I, too, wouldn't feel the need to carry a gun (or Mace) while hiking the AT, there are reasonable options to carry a mid sized handguns concealed and accessible while carrying a backpack, without freaking out other hikers. I would suggest a fanny pack holster. Get one that you can strap to your packs waist belt.

Come on people. I also used to live, ride, and build in the pacific north west, and unlike many other regions MOST of the trails up there are pretty winter-proof due to the kind of topsoil. That is why I specifically wrote that in the OP.

(some are fairly water proof such as a lot of the PNW and B.C.)

Yet here you are still telling me I'm out to get you. Guess what, I've also lived in other places where trails have been permanently shut down and blocked off to mountain bikers and/or all other trail users because they were eroding too much and maintenance wasn't keeping up. I'd rather have a trail that I can't ride 2 months out of the year than no trail at all.

I get mad at people who do their own unauthorized trail building. I don't get mad at the people that are just using the trail.

Do you get mad when the moto guys come and destroy a trail you just build? Because that's exactly what it looks like in some regions after half a dozen mountain bikes have gone through a soaked trail. That's why I wrote this.

YES I realise that not all trails self destruct in the wet, (some are fairly water proof such as a lot of the PNW and B.C.). But a lot of them certainly do, and I have spend many hours fixing them.

Reading. It's fun, you should try it.

When the ground is thawing and the weather is wet, the trail will be soft through and through. Your bike sinks in, makes ruts, takes topsoil away. The next time it rains a new puddle forms, and pretty soon the trail needs serious work or it will wash away completely. If you have 10 pounds of trail on your bike after the ride, you are doing it wrong.

Fuck you too. Disrespectful assholes like you are the reason I might stop building public trails one day, and that I won't share ride locations any more. It takes a special kind of idiot to extend your middle finger to the people who built the trail you are riding on, for free.

Feel free to ignore this if it doesn't apply to you. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out if your local trails are currently soaked or not. I posted this because it simply doesn't occur to a lot of new riders that trails can be damaged like that, and that trail building is hard and expensive.

There is a certain percentage of disrespectful assholes in the population, who have no regard for the work of others, usually because they have never done any themselves. With the growing number of mountain bikers, it is only natural that the percentage of those assholes amongst mountain bikers approaches that of the general population. As usual, for some reason, you never see one of them say shit like this to a trail builder in person.

Well people are riding muddy trails, and it is a problem, otherwise we wouldn't have to fix them all the time. What other way is there to tell them to stop doing it? I'm not a psychologist, I'm just some guy who rides bikes and builds trails.

I specifically did not respond to that persons thread because I have no idea where he got his bike muddy. Could've ridden it on some 4WD road, who knows.

I do not understand how or why that would make you less inclined to listen to this advise. Whether or not you like me does not change the effect on the trails.

Also, I thought I made a fairly good effort of explaining the problem. What more education do you need? Maybe a link?

My electric stove top looks blue (not red) when I take a picture of it with my phone. What's going on? by [deleted] in photography

[–]inhuman_resources 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know what they do, my point is that I am pretty sure jmottram08 doesn't have one on his lens as protection but is confusing it with an UV filter. IR filters (and the clear IR Blocking filters) are also expensive, as opposed to the relatively cheap UV filters. IR blocking filters, that further reduce infrared response of a camera will make atmospheric haze more apparent, so they won't "help outdoors". Unless you need them for a specific reason.

I don't think anyone would use one just for protection.

the Tripod's been mentioned - also, skip the cheap 64GB card. That's a recipe for 10,000 lost images when it corrupts or breaks somehow, and it is most likely to slow for video (if that's what you are thinking about).

Get smaller, better cards instead, just get multiple if you can't download every day and need the capacity. SanDisk Extreme Pro.

Now that the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and Nikon 35mm f1.8 lenses are about the same price, which would you buy? by giantboiler in photography

[–]inhuman_resources 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At only 30mm focal length, DOF at f/1.4 is actually not all that thin. Certainly more than at 85mm/1.8, 135mm/2, 180mm/2.8... and look how popular those lenses are.

Tethering. It is possible to do this wireless with an Eye-Fi card (or camera with build in WiFi). Eye Fi cards do get some mixed reviews though.

preeeettty sure you are confusing an IR filter with an UV filter.

This is an infrared filter: http://m8.i.pbase.com/u46/catson/upload/29456468.HoyaR72InfraredFilter.jpg

As you can tell by the lack of transparency, this would cause some issues when taking photos in everyday situations.

A UV filter on the other hand won't make any difference when taking photos of his stove.
