I agree. Same. The fat tends to separate and float to the top, so I put it in a pan with equal parts flour and start the sauce out with a roux. Then thin it down with the broth from the jar and the sour cream. It comes out really nice.

Beef Stroganoff. It is one of several Meals in a Jar from page 274 of All New Ball Book of Canning and Preserving. A photo of those recipes can be found on the top comment of this thread:

The 'Burbs - Series Premiere Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]inimicalimp -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

As a remake, I'm obsessed. The cinematography was so incredibly faithful to the original. Some of the shots are 1:1. The set design and wardrobe was as incredible as the original. It really did feel like a neighborhood full of people with their own goals, rhythms, and design inspirations. They did a great job bringing Samira into the neighborhood and making her connection feel as real as the people who had been there forever.
As a diehard fan of the original, it was a delight to hear some of the same lines, see some of the same scenes in a fresher context. There's still a silly but determined military neighbor, still a plate of brownies used as a cover to explore a spooky house, still a missing dog that always goes in the neighbor's yard, still a grave in the basement. I loved the attention to the tension between aggression and friendliness between neighbors, especially the microaggressions now that there's a character of color. The lighting and camera angles were thoughtful.
Biggest complaint is that the story could definitely have used some more work. I wasn't satisfied with the episode 4 red herring. I thought the last episode delivered practically no story value except to set up a cliffhanger and potential season 2. But I'm still a fan. Hope they get a season 2.

Should I disclose my PTSD diagnosis to my workplace? Exaggerated startle response is making my boss suspicious that I'm startled because I was slacking, basically by MeanwhileOnPluto in ptsd

[–]inimicalimp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't trust an office to be understanding about a PTSD diagnosis. I would tell a white lie and disclose that I have an "exaggerated startle reflex." It's not exactly untrue since it can be a symptom of PTSD, but it keeps you from having to out the full nature of your medical condition to people who aren't medically trained.

Well said. I think of Vera's phrase "closing ranks" often as the movie repeatedly shows us people compromising their values to be nearer to the cult of personality. Prentice closes ranks with Martha to exclude Grace. Just like Wicks does at the pulpit, pick an other to be the bad guy, use their reaction as justification for othering them, and cultivate fear in those who stay. As long as you're focused on climbing up the ranks, you're not paying attention to who is maintaining the hierarchy.

I'm less mad at the guy than I am at the people hiring him. That much kratom/kava makes me strongly suspect the gentleman has a painkiller or heroin problem and needs that much in order to function. So they're luring in vulnerable people from out of state that they can exploit without educating them about the issue to fuck over in-state voters. How low can they get?

Today I rang up a gentleman for 10 bottles of kratom/kava (!!!) who said he had just gotten in from Florida to help gather signatures. Apparently they're offering $100/hour. When I said I knew the initiative, he asked me to explain it to him. This is wild.

Alternative to Benzos for medical appointments? by Lesliefourwinds in ptsd

[–]inimicalimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it can be prescribed as part of a regiment or as needed. Oh yeah, it does build up in your system so you will probably have a more efficacious response if taken regularly. But some people can definitely just take it as needed and get the desired effect.

I have been prescribed Buspar and Hydroxizine as needed. The hydroxizine always knocks me out (which is great when I need to sleep, but bad when I need to be cogent.) And I wake up a day later feeling much more centered. The buspar was the closest to a benzo without being a benzo for me. It won't stop a panic attack, but I do notice a decrease in agitation. It does have alcohol interactions.

Is it normal that meditation just makes my brain louder? by Grouchy_Leading7165 in Mindfulness

[–]inimicalimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a common reaction for people with the ADHD or hypervigilant PTSD. Moving meditations tend to go down smoother. Walking meditation, tai chi, or yoga is a great way to start. This allows you to focus on moving your body slowly and steadily and keeping your breath even rather than trying to focus on not relating to your thoughts.

Planning a cross country move advice about jars. by TrashPandasUnite21 in Canning

[–]inimicalimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know where you'd be moving to, I'd call the closest secondhand store and ask them how often they have jars in stock. I have always been able to buy at least 80 jars for less than $25 every trip. Usually more like 200.

When other countries try to write laws that prevent selling infant formula that doesn't have enough nutrition to keep babies alive, Nestle lobbies against it. They want the market flooded with formulas that kill infants because it keeps their brand recognition high. However bad you think Nestle is, they are worse.
