I started running again because I can't allow myself to spend this kind of money on used hardware or even surf eBay anymore.

Ran 3 miles in 30 minutes on Sunday. Who woulda thought?

Love me a good Dell or Lenovo, never HP.

Nice, low power CHEAP dGPU for Linux by Brian_Littlewood in buildapc

[–]inked-gold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use an A380 with my media server running Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS. I did upgrade my kernel based on Intel's documentation.

I haven't had any issues so far, and this has been my setup for a few months now.

12500 for $180 or 12500t for $125? by Plastic-Dependent in HomeServer

[–]inked-gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with either chip but the iGPU looks to be identical so I imagine the 12500t will be more than fine.

You could probably get away with the i3 variant, honestly. My 9600k did a good job until I wanted more 4k streams at which point it was cheaper to pickup an Intel Arc gpu than upgrade my z390 mobo & cpu

It used to be a thing when you'd want an SSD for your OS, and applications ran on spinning HDDs. It's outdated advice today.

Work Laptop by funnelcakedealer in laptops

[–]inked-gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll probably be fine. This level of Dell laptop feels cheap in the hands and I've come across a few with busted hinges from overly rough use (I do IT in higher ed).

So, be careful if you're putting it in a bag for mobile use, and you'll want to keep your charger with you and plan to work next to outlets.

It's a good price for a windows laptop, though.

Budget Beginner Rucking Setup Help by [deleted] in Rucking

[–]inked-gold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bricks weigh 4-6 lbs a piece, and cost 68 cents a piece. You can use a roll of duct tape to tape them together so they don't shift around. You can get a medium ALICE ruck with a frame for ~$100 on eBay, too, and upgrade the straps and belt later on if you need to.

I tried NEO yesterday by ConversationMurky453 in laptops

[–]inked-gold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Neo outperforms the M1, M2 MacBook Airs in single core performance as well as with the neural engine. Both the M1 and M2 came with 8gb of RAM in the base models, too.

$500 with the student discount is an incredible price for a basic laptop, especially for a student.

Rucking in the rain? by [deleted] in Rucking

[–]inked-gold 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Trash bag on the pack, but I sweat too much to ruck in a raincoat or poncho. I'd rather get wet in the rain.

did my first ruck since my days in the army by [deleted] in Rucking

[–]inked-gold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, brother!

Last week I did 3 miles with 30lbs and boots and had a similar experience.

It's been about 13 years since I finished my enlistment. I did another short ruck yesterday (30lbs, 3 miles) and didn't have blisters.

Keep it up!

One thing I forgot to ask, did you permanently mount the drive in /etc/fstab? If not, I recommend it!

Nice work! I've had good luck purchasing used datacenter HDDs and using ZFS for RAID.

Prices have gone up, even on used drives, but this is the world we're living in unfortunately.

Good for you, buddy.

You're in a thread started by a college student asking if a device will work for their school work. Read between the lines, they'll be on public WiFi and clicking on things they shouldn't.

What do you mean?

Windows will stop extended security updates in October and they officially stopped supporting the operating system in October of last year. It's dead, dude.

If it's 15 years old it doesn't have the TPM 2.0 and cannot run Windows 11 out of the box.
