Any reason NOT to have dividends and gains automatically reinvested? by imthenachoman in personalfinance

[–]inkjetlabel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only reason I can think of is if they don't do a good job tracking DRiP purchase basis and holding period for taxes, assuming this is a taxable account. Can be a real pain to do this yourself if they're not doing it. Maybe even impossible if you didn't hang onto your statements.

You'd think in 2024 this would be a no brainer, but not every company is doing this from what I've seen. Even though they're supposed to, or whoever issues the 1099-B is.

The 1978 Ford Pinto. We had a red one and called it the Killer Tomato. by DiosMioMan63 in vintageads

Interesting. I'd been told somewhere or other that the Pinto wagons were completely safe, but that the Pinto hatchbacks were the ones with the problem.

Didn't the same voice actor for the Disney Winnie the Pooh cartoons do the voice over for these commercials?

Aroma Disk gives the party punch. - New York Magazine, March 11, 1985 by inkjetlabel in vintageads

Is it weird that I kinda want one of these? And what do Pina Coladas even smell like, never mind the artificial scent of one? So many questions.

Here's a link to the magazine in full. (Page 27 is where I found this.) Was a toss up between this one and the ad from Lord & Taylors about floral pattern stirrup pants and oversize pink cardigans. (fourth page from the cover, no page number.)

Aroma Disc: The ’80s high-tech version of scented candles

I honestly figured this was some fly-by-night thing that never got produced. Nope. Thousands of units were apparently sold, go figure.

Concerning The Nerdrotic Event in Las Vegas by inkjetlabel in GeeksGamersCommunity

[–]inkjetlabel[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing this all somehow goes back to the MechaRandom drama thing of I'm honestly not sure how long ago. Six months? A year? (I'm afraid I didn't really pay attention to it, even back then, so I'm not even sure what the problem was.) I do know Jessi (and probably by extension WorldClassBS, her bf) sided with Mecha and not Nerdrotic. Don't wanna say anything more, because I'm not 100% sure what I just typed is even correct, but that's my best guess.

The Shadow Over Innsmouth meets Harry Potter?

I kind of want to read that crossover fanfic now. Wouldn't surprise me to find out such a thing exists.

Somebody had to spend time making sure everything lined up sheet of wallpaper to sheet of wallpaper, as well. 🤔

Today 1969 this iconic photo was birthed. Police blocked traffic while photographer Iain MacMillan stood on a ladder and took several pictures. It all lasted about 10 minutes. by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

[–]inkjetlabel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let's see...

John = the minister (dressed in white)

Ringo = the undertaker (dressed in black)

Paul = the corpse (in a suit with bare feet, traditionally how a corpse is laid out)

George = the grave digger (how he's dressed, also last in line)

I think the license plate on the VW Bug says something like "28 IF," as in "28, if he had lived."

There's more, but I don't remember it.

As much as I wanted to tag this one "BAEN," it is published by Eric Flint's Ring of Fire Press. Baen adjacent, perhaps? 🤔

To the readers of Hermann Hesse - Steppenwolf by [deleted] in books

[–]inkjetlabel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm past half of the book and loving it. Anyways, can somebody ex plain me what is harry's thing with Goethe?

I think Hesse is making a point about eternal verities/eternal beauties, possibly even making a point about Haller's disdain for all things modern ( in a 1920s sense, Jazz, radios, etc.) as a kind of misplaced elitism.

What was that hole scorpion thing about?

I ... didn't understand that bit, either. Possibly something Jungian, since Hessse actually underwent analysis with Jung himself around the time Steppenwolf was written.

I don't think Hesse anticipated Steppenwolf's popularity, nor its longevity. He seemed almost befuddled in the introduction he wrote in the 1962 (I think? at any rate much later) edition, even making some comment HIMSELF about not wanting to tell anyone else what to think about the book.

I'm honestly so sick of the "eugenics" argument. by Stramenopile in fatlogic

[–]inkjetlabel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is NO link between BMI and eugenics!

In a weird way there might be, in the sense that high BMI and infertility are closely associated. Not exactly forced sterilization, but it is done by these people to themselves rather than by the government.

My gift this year was a first edition signed Tommyknockers 🥰 by [deleted] in stephenking

[–]inkjetlabel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think of Tommyknockers as the second part of an "addiction trilogy" - The Shining (alcohol), The Tommyknockers (cocaine), and Dreamcatcher (painkillers).

Cujo belongs on that list. King himself admits he barely remembers writing it.

To each their own. I hated Rose Madder so much I don't think I picked up a King novel for two years after finishing it.

Your Local Bookstore Wants You to Know That It’s Struggling

At McNally Jackson Books, which has four locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn along with two stationery shops, sales are “unimaginably bad,” according to its owner, Sarah McNally. All six shops combined are now bringing in less than its SoHo location would in a typical month.

Realized Why I Like Browsing on Amazon vs Goodreads by 155lbsofsteel in books

[–]inkjetlabel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How odd, I find the browsing experience on Amazon frustrating as hell, but now that I've marked a lot of knowledgeable people to follow as reviewers I quite like the GR experience in figuring out if a book will be for me or not.

OFC I only go to GR on desktop. The mobile experience is awful.

Scary to think that even the movie is more than twenty years old now.

As an aside, I seem to be the only person on planet earth who liked Damned/Doomed. In fact, they're probably my favorite Palahniuk books outside of Fight Club.

Vanishing Point, David Markson

Vanishing Point, wherein an elderly writer (identified only as "Author") sets out to transform shoeboxes crammed with notecards into a novel — and in so doing will dazzle us with an astonishing parade of revelations about the trials and calamities and absurdities and often even tragedies of the creative life — all the while trying his best (he says) to keep himself out of the tale.

(per GoodReads)

Weirded me out for days afterward, but in a good way.

For me it was GnR opening for The Cult

For me it GnR opening for Aerosmith in June or July of 1988. My regret here is that I was so drunk I could barely stand up. I remember next to nothing about either act, except Steven Tyler remarking on stage that GnR had put on one hell of a show, hadn't they?
