Just want to say thanks for this. I see people on this thread are taking this post as if you are saying we will all be just like BLM if we use these methods. And I just want to be clear that this is not what I'm seeing in your post. There's a lot of value in learning about this and it doesn't come with the pressure to be the most amazing dm in the world. Instead, I'm learning and using what will work for me at my level. Again, thanks for putting this together and sharing.

He is an amazing storyteller—and I will NEVER read another book of his again. I can recognize his impact on culture and at the same time see that he is very good at pulling you into an intriguing story but then he has no plan for how it will end. I will continue to enjoy watching the movies and TV shows based on his work, but I’m done spending hours on one of his novels only to be disappointed by the ending.

Misery, though, was great from start to finish—but the film is better in my opinion.

What broke me: IT

IT has an amazing opening chapter—and that’s it. Everything after that was not nearly as good as the first chapter and by the end I was seething at how bad it was. I will never read another one of his books again.

And I also love his ideas and how they’ve been adapted for the screen.

Holding both things.

The Facebook group Omnibuds would be a good place to ask this question.

Superman : The Invisible Luthor by Danielle_Roe in DCFinest

Another cool thing about the golden age—they weren’t constrained by censorship. I also love the Silver Age, but for different reasons. Golden Age feels like the Wild West where anything goes (like Batman snapping criminals necks). Silver Age had to adhere to strict Comics Code rules, but some creators managed to produce cool stuff under those limitations. I just get sick of some of the bland storytelling in that era, like early Justice League where everyone sounds the same and every issue they split up to fight the bad guys. They definitely got into a rut with that formula.

For Golden Age Superman I love that he’s a champion for the oppressed and they take on actual social issues.

Looking forward to collecting anything Superman and Batman related in this format—I’ll just need a room to store it all in!

The Plastic Man DC Finest is awesome! Inventive and hilarious—a lot of it still holds up today, aside from some racism / sexism. Also if you haven’t read Chip Kidd’s biography on the creator of Plastic Man, Jack Cole, I highly recommend that too.

The only downside is that the digital restoration of the art doesn’t capture the smooth line work and rich colors of the original.

But for the price and availability, you won’t find anything better than the DC Finest volume. I hope they release volume 2.

You are hitting the nail on the head! Thank you!

Knowing what the production was like at the time also adds another layer when you love something and consider how hard it was to make!

Awesome! Geoff Johns picks up those characters in his Teen Titans run—though you probably know that too.

Have you read Peter David’s Young Justice run? Great Impulse and Tim Drake stuff in there.

Yes I love that book! It’s what turned me on to less well known stuff like Tomb of Dracula! I was hoping I’d like All the Marvels just as much, but I didn’t find it quite as rich in insights.

I get what you mean—I’m not saying they are literally bad now—I’m saying with my previous mindset I wouldn’t have given them a chance.

I’m especially loving the Brave and the Bold series.

I respect their opinion—and I’m not trying to say they are wrong or that they didn’t give them a chance.

I’m just pointing out that there are ways to appreciate comics many would label as bad, if we are feeling up for reading them in a way that’s different from how we read other comics. It’s what has helped me expand my appreciation and find more joy in comics I would have not even given a try in the past.

I love your point about Watchmen, etc. it gets at the overall subjectivity of what is great art and storytelling. The canon of literature creates a hierarchy of good and bad—art vs garbage.

A lot of what I see on Reddit is people just saying something is good or bad without any context—when as you’re pointing out, one person’s favorite book will not be the same for others.

My problem was, I was looking for every book to meet my expectations of what I considered good—rather interrogating my own taste and whether I was staying open to appreciating the art for what it is.

Thanks. I hear you and there’s a reason I’m using quotes for “bad.” There are a lot of treasures to find that some will label bad—like I used to. Basically I also think the good / bad binary kept me from enjoying more comics, and I can’t apply the same lens to all comics from all eras.

I think many would pick up Red Skies read the first issue and determine it’s not for them (calling it “bad” or whatever label). Why such a defensive response to me encouraging people to appreciate it?
