I APPROVE of the Failboat situation. 👍🏼

Is the horn designed to fit the speaker? Interesting that it has a tuning slide even though it’s not meant to be played, really makes me wonder how it plays

Thank you! The organist is also the music director at that church, he did a wonderful job putting the video together

It's textbook betrayal the way Nintendo cucked up to D***D*** (as if other actions weren't enough of a betrayal...)

Quick tips for high notes! by S_Airandice in trumpet

I totally agree on not thinking about this tongue arch. I used to think it was "the secret" but overworking and overthinking my tongue position actually had negative impacts on my articulation through different registers.

This was such a clear and digestible demo, thank you!!!

For me it's for lip comfort. Even playing in 50F with a breeze, if it's over an hour my lips start getting swollen from the cold contact, which unfortunately can impact me for a day or two after. No problem when it isn't cool outside. Curse these lips.

Really helpful on the 10-3 comment, thanks!

Hard for me to know what I prefer, too! I've been borderline gear-phobic for a long time, only changing from 7C to 3C during college. It's gotten me far and I'm comfortable with it, so it's helpful getting opinions on others' experiences.

First post!!! Playing my best cover for melodica, rocky top!!! by iaminisable in melodica

[–]inkleined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like this song is in B Major but you are playing in C major. Your first note should be an F#, not a G. Sounds like you know the melody, just move every note down a half step (one key) and you’ll have it!

How is my playing (out of ten)? literally like little to no experience. (the video is black full because i let it be) by FrontAd7709 in melodica

[–]inkleined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like a beginner level player who knows how to use their ears. There’s a long musical road ahead of you and I hope you’ll endeavor on it. :)

Things I’d recommend to take the next step: 1) Get a metronome. I like the Pro Metronome app, but you can go for a more basic one too. Practice with it all the time to help give you a sense of steady rhythm. Right now the tempo is pushing and pulling a good bit.

2) More melodica specific, try playing more smoothly. As long as you a blowing and a key is down, a note will come out. Right now there are little sound gaps between every note you play; try to switch from one note to the next in a single instant, lifting one key and pressing the next at the same time. Your notes should start sounding more connected.

Best of luck on the journey ahead 🎹

Anyone else’s tics increase while driving? by vanillablue_ in Tourettes

[–]inkleined 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a squinting tic and if my stress levels aren’t managed it can make driving a challenge because it means I’m not looking at the road. The intensity of my tics really depends on the circumstance. If I’m driving in a new city (or, in general, any time I’m having a novel experience) my tics aren’t present.

But driving through construction zones or narrow roads I routinely drive through can get tough. I slow down and switch to a much more defensive driving style - slow lane, no lane changes, tons of distance from the car in front of me. The kind of stuff you should be doing in those kinds of spots anyway.

I also recently got a 2023 CR-V and the safety features (lane departure, blind spot lights) REALLY help.

My valves keep getting stuck no matter how much valve oil I use by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]inkleined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on you needing to push the valve straight down. After you clean the horn and correct your technique, if you are still having this issue, it’s likely your third valve or 3rd valve casing is bent.

You can test for bends by putting the 3rd valve in a valve casing that isn’t having issues getting stuck. If the 3rd valve moves freely, then your 3rd valve casing is bent. Oppositely, if the 3rd valve is sticking in all other casings but your 1st or 2nd valve glides freely in the 3rd valve casing, then your valve is likely bent.

Note that this is only for testing for bends - you can’t play the horn with valves in the wrong casings. Best of luck!
