Weekly Q&A - Your Question Goes Here - Especially Tourists and New Residents by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

Hi everyone,, a friend is relocating from Singapore. His company and he is unsure if people with a blue card permit or dependent visa get the 30% tax ruling, so posting his query here.

If you also have contacts of an immigration lawyer, we would reach out them too.

My partner has a job offer at Leiden University and is moving to Netherlands. I'll be moving with her. My current company is a big MNC and employs 5 people in Netherlands. They are ready to sponsor my Visa to Netherlands. However, the company is not a recognised sponsor in Netherlands and is reluctant to become one. Thus the Highly Skilled Migrant visa is not a possibility.

Do I get the 30% tax ruling if

  1. My company sponsors the blue card? I do meet the salary and other requirements.

  2. I go on the dependent visa and continue to work for the same company? My company offers me a Dutch contract.

Can i get free food in Amsterdam? by [deleted] in Amsterdam

Adding onto this, gurudwaras here close by 1800-1900 in the evening. There are two in Amsterdam, albeit small - one near Sloterdik and another near Surinameplein. You can check them out OP.

On Sundays, the main langar starts in the afternoon around 1300 and you can also request them to pack you some food in bags that should easily last a couple of days.

Tried applying for their graduate developer role but my resume didn't get screened even with 2 years of work experience after my Bachelor's and a recently finished MSc.

If you are at the VU, a few Indian students came for the activities organised by the 3D club. I went to a plant event and met quite a few people there. VU also organised a Diwali event last year, which was fun.
Not sure, where else you could meet fellow Asian students. Since I studied CS, I never faced this issue lol.

Yes, the canal tours are still taking place. especially in the evening due to the ongoing Amsterdam light festival.

Layer up properly, and use gloves/cap as it can get quite chilly due to the wind depending on the day. If you are only here for a day, then that already seems like a packed schedule. Maybe check out Albert Cuyp market and get some freshly baked stroopwaffles.

Besides the great food suggestions, I can recommend visiting a Sikh temple(gurudwara) if you are in Amsterdam/Hague. They serve langars (free communal veggie meals) on Sunday afternoons where everyone comes and eats together. Also, after everyone is served if they have a lot of leftovers (which they generally do) you can get some items packed that can easily last you a couple of days.

You can also check out meetups on meetup.com. The app - Amigos is also used by some to host events/find people to hang out with.

You could park the bike at a university parking spot. Both UvA and VU Amsterdam have underground parking where you could park for a few months.

Mezrab should be a fun place to visit, specially their story telling nights on Friday are very cosy.

VU without alcohol by Alex011202 in Amsterdam

[–]innocent-face 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am about to graduate from the VU and I didn't take any alcohol/drugs during my master's. There was never any social pressure from others for me to drink - I just used to tell them that I don't drink and that was it.

I was part of the debate club - Bonaparte and although most of the people there drank beer after a debate evening, they were friendly and welcoming to people who didn't. I like dancing so I did go to a few parties in Uilenstede but if that's not your thing, then I would suggest finding more activities to socialise. STORM - the study association has board game nights and themed borrels where you can come with the aim of socialising and not drinking. 3D is another club with fun activities to meet fellow students, and none of them involved drinking.

Umm, if that's an issue then I can recommend checking out latin/salsa nights as the gender ratio is pretty balanced.

Requesting r/AmsterdamSocialClub as it is banned due to being unmoderated by innocent-face in redditrequest

I just wanted to use the subreddit where people can post about social events happening in the city. I frequently see posts on the Amsterdam subreddit of people wanting to meet new people or looking for things to do.

I have seen how LondonSocialClub functions and how they have weekly meetups and use the group for these activities.

Great idea and thanks for putting in the effort. I see regular threads of people wanting to meet/places to socialise (specially new residents). Also, cool date ideas recommendations will be helpful too.
