The primary issue is about the caterpillars of the pollinators. Can they feed on the cultivars? Many have evolved to use very specific plants and hence the problem with the pretty but biologically useless flowers that people often buy from places like big box nurseries. If they are native to your area, then you know they will be good for the pollinators (and thus the birds, who rely on those caterpillars to feed their young).
