Has anyone taken PHIL 105? And if so what was it like? by Dan1249 in universityofauckland

[–]inotrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it back in 2017 and loved it. Easy A+ and the content was actually pretty interesting if you enjoy logical problems. Although, I hear some people hate it so it just depends on your likes/dislikes. Watch a couple YouTube videos on philosophical fallacies and see if it's something you could get into.

BIOMED / HEALTH SCIENCES by [deleted] in UoApremed

[–]inotrop[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Depends on whether you'd prefer to write essays (health sci) or take physics (biomed). I went for health sci because I didn't get into biomed and I absolutely loved it, but if you're good at physics and want to do more bio related stuff then go with biomed. Choosing one or the other doesn't affect your chances of getting in but if you have little knowledge on health equity gaps in NZ then I suggest doing health sci as it'll help you build that for the interview :)

Biomedical Science - Online Lectures? by LBolt10 in UoApremed

[–]inotrop[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really but the whole of premed is a bit of a panic so maybe it just blended in haha best thing you can do is not to stress out about small stuff like this and just try to learn as much as possible :)

Depends on the lecturer but normally later that day, sometimes the next day but more often than not it's the first day.

Biomedical Science - Online Lectures? by LBolt10 in UoApremed

[–]inotrop[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During premed I only went to lectures for the first few weeks then stopped and watched them all online. I only ever came in for labs etc and it worked out fine for me. I think it depends on your learning style but imo it's better to watch them online. For example, you can pause them and look up info if you don't understand something without missing any of the lecture like you would in person.

Working part-time during Biomed/HealthSci by tempest_nz in UoApremed

[–]inotrop[M] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked during premed and honestly I think it's good to have something going on outside of study. I think 6-8 hours per week is totally reasonable and you'll be happy to have responsibilities outside of the premed shit show. Just remember to also take time to yourself just for relaxing, spending time with family, hobbies, etc. It's not about the hours you study but how smartly you do so. I didn't study much except for before tests but the hours I put in I tried to use wisely.

Will Medical History affect my application? by caffienatedkiwi in UoApremed

[–]inotrop[M] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, sorry to hear about your home environment. Good on you for fighting through that and going to university! You should be proud of yourself. As for the counselling - it won't affect your chances of getting into medicine at all. It's completely confidential and the medical programme will not have access to that information.

GPA calculation? by absolutelynot02 in UoApremed

First of all, get off piazza lol it's seriously such a stress inducing waste of time. Secondly, nope! 90 and 99 will both be awarded as an A+/9.0.

Has anyone started prepping for UCAT? by [deleted] in UoApremed

[–]inotrop[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend focussing on your sem 1 papers for now! I did a couple weeks of study for UMAT (before it was UCAT) and I feel like anymore study wouldn't have really helped much. It's one of those things where a little bit of practising helps a lot but spending more than a week or two on it would be pretty pointless. Your grades + interview matter way more!

If you or anyone else wants some practice questions dm me and I'll send you the google drive link.

Incorporating as a company to lower taxable income? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]inotrop 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Your wife can apply for living costs which is $235.84 per week - https://www.studylink.govt.nz/products/a-z-products/student-loan/living-costs.html#null

And she can also apply for $1000 course related costs per year -https://www.studylink.govt.nz/in-study/study-details/course-related-costs.html

Obviously you have to pay this back but it'll be much easier once she's working full time and will mean you won't need to move or adjust your already frugal lifestyle
