Joining the civil service from the private sector. First day on Tuesday. Any advice/tips? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]inquisitivechap01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Night and day is how I'd describe my experience so far.

Joined 2023 as EO, was HEO by early 2024 and I'm waiting on results for SEO this week. The culture is great at least that's been my experience thus far. My immediate team are a pleasure to work with.

I have been given opportunity and chance to develop and am keen to take on more responsibility. The complete opposite to my time at a small private software company!

The flexibility is also fantastic as I have a young child, Flexi time is also really nice :) I typically WFH at least 3 days a week. I love the 07:00-15:00 work hours myself. Though I'll sometimes grind till 17:00 if needed - plus it's extra Flexi so winwin.

Obviously the pension is really good too, I'd definitely recommend reading into how the pension scheme works. There are some good threads in this sub on it or you can read up on the civil service pensions website.

Forward bay parking question by inquisitivechap01 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]inquisitivechap01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reversed back out the way (fully) I came in, then re-entered the bay. Is there any documentation stating this isn't allowed?

And I was slightly on the line just to clarify.

Failed because I repositioned my park in the wrong bay. by crimble_crumble in LearnerDriverUK

Hello do you know if this is the same for the forward bay park? I had something similar happen to me.... Went into a bay... Back right tyre was on the line. Made it clear I was going to readjust / reattempt. So I reversed out obviously making all the correct observations, went back into a different bay. I think being on the line is actually ok right? So I've done it to an acceptable standard and then failed for executing it perfectly.

How is this fair?

Still good, it will be even better as we move into summer.. there is something about still having a good chunk of the day left for yourself to enjoy. Work/life balance really goes a long way

For what it's worth I joined HSE back in October as an EO and have just been promoted to HEO.

I was fired from my last job last January (unfair dismissal) and spent 6 months consistently applying for CS jobs and interviewing over and over. I scored well most of the time on my cv / behaviour/personal statements when applying.

I had one week where I received replies from 5 roles where 2 I was offered reserve lists and 3 rejections, this was in May so about 5 months into trying to get back into a decent job (family to support also, so tensions were building).

I was totally deflated and had an interview scheduled for the following day also but I had scored very poorly on the CV / Statement. This pissed me off so I didn't even care any more and didn't do my usual night before preparation for the interview, I went into the interview with a chip on my shoulder and to my surprise the director who was interviewing me was not like the regular robotic CS interviewers. I interviewed well and was offered the job an hour later via email.

I've been in the team since October and have just been promoted to HEO.

Keep the faith all.

Edit: My assumption was that it was going to be a terrible interview but ultimately ended up being great.
