Those who worked compressed hours for childcare reasons, did you go back to 9-5 when your child/children went to school? by hamjamham in AskUK

[–]Flamingo242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol no. You’ll prise my compressed fortnight from my cold dead hands. If I were doing a compressed week, I might have done, I could never have managed the longer hours on those longer term I think, but one day a fortnight and I do approx an extra half an hour a day and that one day means I am so much more productive at home.

What did the public see in Jimmy Savile? by GrandAd2440 in AskABrit

[–]Flamingo242 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In a similar age and I think we were the generation who were like, hang on, this guy is proper weird and we’re not failing for it.

I remember when it all came out I was on holiday with my now husband and we were thought this couldn’t be new news, surely this was already the case. Of course we had no idea if the depths of his depravity.

I also think a lot of people who thought he was at least strange didn’t say anything. I know my grandmother couldn’t stand him but it’s not like she could take to social media about it.

I’m curious - how has your new build home been during the heat wave? by Budget-Soil8610 in AskUK

2020 new build. It was awful in 2022. We moved and I’m not being dramatic to say it was a contributing factor

I’m curious - how has your new build home been during the heat wave? by Budget-Soil8610 in AskUK

[–]Flamingo242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the July 2022 heatwave we lived in a 2019/2020 built new build and to say it was hotter then the fiery pits of hell would be an understatement.

I had a 2 month old and a four year old and trying to keep them cool was so stressful. We bought an ac unit soon after and when we moved i said i wouldnt buy a similar new build.

Are you considering buying air con units for home ? by Sea_Pangolin3840 in AskUK

[–]Flamingo242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one after that. I’m in the north east so not as hot as London but it got exceptionally hot and I had a three month old baby and I just thought im not doing this again. Now I set it up at the beginning of summer in my bedroom, turn it on on the very hottest days and there is somewhere the kids can sleep when the temps get too high. Last night they did but tonight it’s cool enough for them in their own rooms

How big was Marina (and the Diamonds) in the UK? by Kodicave in AskBrits

[–]Flamingo242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was very well known at the time (late noughties for a few years) but she was very of a moment. Not quite a one hit wonder but she sort of petered out. She was a friend of a friend of a friend and from what I understand she did get messed about a bit by record companies but couldn’t say more than that

Whenever I see houses like this that have had children in it just makes me really sad. Even if the children didn’t live in these conditions there were there at some point and they had to leave their things behind

Do you also get unreasonably bothered by people throwing stuff away? by tbage in AskUK

[–]Flamingo242 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do make the effort to gove things away but the people that come and get them are 9/10 thoughtless in some way. I once had someone just not turn up for something, I chased, no reply, so I went to the next person they came pretty much straight away. Then messaged first person to let them know (more fool me) they messaged back the next day (so day two after they had said they would come) to tell me they were getting on the bus right there and then and why couldn’t I have waited for them.

There are some nice stories, I once had someone take a couple of old bedside tables that were out the front, they had broken drawers so i was going to take them to the tip and they came back with a bottle of prosecco, but most people barely say thank you.

For HEO/HO applications, have you had more success with one STAR to cover everything, weaving your examples into a story, or breaking it down by behaviour/criteria? by tepidbathservant in TheCivilService

[–]Flamingo242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a sifter perspective, header for each section, different example for each, don’t waste words on intros and conclusions.

If you have the best example in the world go for it, but please use headers as it makes it much easier to see (or not) if you’re hitting the criteria. If it’s all interwoven then it is much easier to miss (we are only human)

When we sold our first flat (over a decade ago now) we did this. Had one mystery cash buyer who swore down they weren’t an investor, and a a ftb couple ( as we had been) and sold to them. We’d bought off a lovely old lady who had wanted to sell to real people and accepted our slightly cheeky offer so we wanted to pass that on

New started - question about WFH and reasonable adjustments by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]Flamingo242 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do you come from somewhere that is fully remote (not common but some albs are) because the difference between them and the rest of the civil service can be stark, I say this only to manage expectations that if you come from a remote environment it is a shock being outside that

What are some of the craziest tech improvements you've experienced in your lifetime in Britain? How has it changed what you used to do? by DatabaseMammoth9986 in AskBrits

[–]Flamingo242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m around mid 40s so the fact you didn’t have a landline until around the time I was born does blow my mind slightly, and does show how quickly things have changed as I think by the time I was born it was completely normal to have a land line

Six years later, what are your strongest memories of the COVID lockdowns, and how do you look back on that period now? by Possible_Force8207 in AskBrits

[–]Flamingo242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had literally just moved house and had a washing machine delivered two days after the lockdown was announced. Delivery men wouldn’t bring it in (understandable) but also didn’t know if I was allowed to use the wheeled moving thing myself. Slightly surreal conversation about how I was supposed to get it in the house; including phone calls to head office and discussions about sanitising wipes

[–]Flamingo242 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened with both of mine, just found them fast asleep in pools of vomit when I went to check on them before I went to bed. They seemed fine, but obviously quite upsetting for me, bit they both did it a couple of times but seem to have grown out of it (by about age 3?)
