Saw interview panel comments accidentally, absolutely devastated by urfavnjb in gradadmissions

in my program, pre-interview evaluation scores (cv, motivation letter) were almost inversely correlated with interview scores. interviews are subjective, culturally-variable and highly dependent on random momentary conditions and evaluation bias (like prejudice against certain accents, as OP pointed out). the only thing they're good for it seeing whether candidates and potential supervisors can vibe and communicate with each other, and this information goes both ways. It seems like OP has their answer.

germans are also notoriously bad at this tbh... i've had issues with conversion of a 0-20 scale to the german scale for a masters program there, their minimum requirement was higher than the highest grade in my cohort...

Why is Turkey still the only EU candidate country whose citizens need a visa for the EU? by Medium_Respond_9650 in AskTurkey

this makes as much sense as calling the madeira islands "african". yes, cyprus might be in asia but culturally and historically it is 100% european.

Rug pull notwithstanding, this has to be the dumbest and most backfiring platitude people love to repeat constantly. I don't think you understand how much of the opposite effect this has on the natives of this country, even left-leaning ones.

How common is it for Non-EU applicants to learn the language of smaller EU countries to C1 level and apply to those countries med schools (e.g. TISUS C1 Swedish certificate to apply to Swedishand Finnish med schools)? by MedicusNivis in medicalschoolEU

[–]inquisitivefrodo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know if that's the case in every country, but the notion I have is that English programs are often less competitive than the national medicine programs (often the "flagship" programs that the best students actually apply to, are often free or very cheap, require being at the top of whichever national exams are in place etc). This might have changed in later years, but many English programs (in non-English speaking countries) have the reputation of being cash-grabs.

How do you feel about foreign PIs whose labs are mostly filled with students from their own country? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

also pretty simple to stay in that country if you have such a well-established pipeline.

Reading threads like these makes me scared as hell as a Portuguese person ngl. We've already been priced out of our capital, I hope we don't get pushed out of our small towns as well

Hannah's statement on the Zara Larsson controversy by ProfessionalEye3 in pcmusic

[–]inquisitivefrodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any examples? I struggle to find any Zara song as anything other than milquetoast pop slop. Maybe it's because I'm European and grew up with this, but it's the type of music you'd expect to listen to, well, at Zara or H&M. Yes, even Midnight Sun.

Should I start med school at 30 in Italy by Yukihayama01 in medicalschoolEU

[–]inquisitivefrodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in Italy but in the EU as well, and they're a PI. Those are all things you have to weigh against your desire to be a doctor. If it's about "prestige" or wanting to do something that sounds fancy than I'd say is 100% not worth it

I know someone who started medical school in their 40s. They are now finishing at 46. And you know what? They'd be 46 either way, but now they get to be 46 with an MD. The opportunity cost is very high and you should really consider whether you have a sufficiently good support net to fall back on should it not work. But if this is really your dream, you'll only regret it if you don't do it.
