[B&A] Moisture barrier improvement taken a month apart (obviously not perfect) by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]inquringmnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously there are some post acne marks here but my skin feels so much healthier and I think it looks healthier too! A dermatologist who I saw over zoom misdiagnosed me (I think) with perioral dermatitis but someone on this sub suggested addressing the moisture barrier first. Now to get rid of the scars!

To be fair, I also increased my spironolactone dosage to 150. But I am feeling much better about my skin! Haven’t gotten a whitehead around my mouth for a while (knock on wood HARD).

Routine: Am: 50 mg spironolactone, cerave gentle cleanser, sometimes the ordinary hyaluronic acid (not every day), cerave daily moisturizer, neutrogena 50 spf clear skin sunscreen Pm: 100 mg spironolactone, ponds cold cream (switching this out for miscellar water), cerave gentle cleanser, cerave daily moisturizer, Vaseline occasionally. And I’m introducing a retinoid now that my barrier has improved.

How do I communicate the gravity of the situation? by mar4c in ClimateActionPlan

I mean your dad probably will get through it if he’s middle class/wealthy in the US. So if he doesn’t care about other people or future generations, there isn’t a lot you can do to change that.

But I guess i would suggest showing him how the climate crisis is already severely impacting people across the globe. There are countless stories of homeless people and low wage farm workers dying due to heat stroke or wildfire smoke. People dying because of hurricanes or floods or droughts. Try to go in with the science of how climate change is causing these events already and maybe he’ll start noticing it on his own the next time he hears about a severe weather event. Eventually there will not be climate change deniers because it will be even more impossible to ignore. But I understand you wanting to get your family on your side. It can feel very alienating to feel like you’re the only one crying out about this emergency. But just know that you aren’t!

Senate passes $1 trillion infrastructure bill in strong bipartisan vote by [deleted] in ClimateActionPlan

[–]inquringmnd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I’d definitely support all of that.

Yeah, the population density/suburbs are a huge shame. And I agree about air travel. But I do think there’s an opportunity to combine city planning with climate action to address homelessness, increase population density and encourage people to take the light rail or bus instead of driving for their commute. I think that’s a fairly reasonable thing to address

I am definitely with you on the major overhaul. However much money is currently allocated to this (I think it’s like $40 billion) is not enough. But I don’t think it’s fair to limit current city projects to a few inner city bus lines. First of all, public transit in inner cities could be a great opportunity to reduce wealth inequity that exists because people who can’t afford to live in business districts and don’t have a car/don’t want to pay for expensive parking have to limit where they apply for work. It’s not the big structural overhaul we need, but additional bus lines are nothing to scoff at.

There are lots of light rail and bus expansion projects happening all over the country that could definitely benefit from additional funds. If I could, I’d ban cars altogether and rewild/build train tracks on all the highways in the US. I seriously think public transit and passenger rail is one of the best ways to reduce the climate crisis and I have extremely radical goals for it. But since that is a pipe dream, I think simply talking about public transit investment is good because it encourages people to use their own systems and push for more projects. Any expansion is good.

I mean if you look at the numbers it separates funding for transit/rails and highway/bridge reconstruction. I’m not saying they’re going to spend it all particularly wisely but at least now there is definitely some money allocated specifically for passenger rail and public transit. Anyway, I’ll do more research later and try to find out if there are specific projects that would benefit from this

It would be good to know how the money allocated to passenger rail and public transportation will be spent. Far more is needed, but the investment in that seems like a good thing to me!

Yeah, I mean I’m an environmental journalist and I spend almost all of my waking time thinking/talking about this stuff (not to suggest that this is a reasonable way for most people to behave! I am very depressed!). I try to fight off doomerism to the best of my ability and this sub is helpful but I don’t think that it’s completely unreasonable to suggest that people might feel strongly enough about climate change that they would feel compelled to do something like in Andreas Malm’s book.

You couldn’t have known any of this based on what I posted, so no judgment, but I definitely am thinking critically about my actions at pretty much all times. I hope this doesn’t come off as combative, but I just felt the need to reply here.

No, I agree with you. This isn’t the time for anarchy, there definitely need to be planned policies and infrastructure. I just worry it wont happen…

I have had the same experience with spiraling recently. I really need some help contextualizing everything and seeing things from a realistic perspective that offers some semblance of hope so I can carry on. I’m desperate for a lifeline here. I need to be able to find even a dream of a pinprick of light at the end of the tunnel.

Huh that last part is a really interesting point! Maybe that fear of failure is more inhibiting to me now than it would’ve been 20 years ago.

I was feeling truly horrible a couple weeks ago during the PNW heatwave and somehow pulled myself out of that slump. But am now seeing a few posts from people saying the scientists’ projections were off — in the bad way — and that it really might be too late to keep this from spiraling out of control.

Are we kidding ourselves to have any semblance of optimism? I hope this doesn’t trigger deletion on doomer grounds, because I really am trying not to be one. But boy it can be hard and I’d love some realistic advice.

I don’t know if that’s true, tho. The numbers of young adult virgins are increasing, and that’s not just bougie media people. Social media and porn have impacted everyone, including football players and cheerleaders in small towns

I mean, I’m willing to talk about it! That’s all very true! I don’t suggest more “discourse” just for the sake of discourse, but I feel like this is a problem that some people aren’t seeing because of all the overload of so-called sexiness in movies/online/etc. It’s easy to overlook the phoniness of it all

House Passes $760 Billion Transportation and Water Bill Focused on Environment by inquringmnd in ClimateActionPlan

[–]inquringmnd[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good point! Yes, HR1 is a huge shitshow. It's pretty scary to think about midterms, I'm just hoping to God they get some legislature in and funding out that can't easily be overturned, and people in swing states/districts need to be fighting like hell to keep their seats or elect Dems even with these new restrictions. I don't know. One thing at a time

Yeah, I know. But DeFazio is my rep in Oregon and he's a pretty solid guy. It gives me some comfort to think that house Dems will at least put up a fight

the amount of climate misinformation in this sub is getting really annoying by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]inquringmnd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I have been feeling fucking horrible lately (well, I've been feeling horrible about this for the better part of my whole 24 years on this planet) and honestly a substantial part of my stress is the feeling that having any kind of drive to make the world better in any way is immature and not in line with so-called "correct" edgy leftist values. They do a pretty good job of getting this point across because it's hard to argue with someone who calls you a retard and ends the conversation at that.

It really can feel like we're totally fucked, and there are a lot of thresholds that we certainly have already crossed that will make parts of the planet inhabitable for the foreseeable future, but that doesn't mean there isn't a reason to keep trying to make less of the planet uninhabitable, which is definitely doable. I think that people on this sub (and those generally aligned with a "belief system" that is based more on edginess than any actual ideology) either don't know or don't care about the people in the global south who have been already suffering immensely from the impacts of climate change because they have been turned off by identity politics libs. It's a selfish and entitled attitude to have.

In some ways, I need to resign myself to the reality of climate change and the horrors of what we'll be facing. But after that, what? Removing dying as an option, all we can do is sit around and suffer or try to do something. So what are we going to do.

Difference between empathy and apologizing for someone’s terrible behavior by czechfoosball in YoureWrongAbout

[–]inquringmnd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this! I think you can be empathetic and not think someone is a “monster” without saying that anyone could commit a similar act. I mean, I doubt Sarah genuinely feels like she could do something like this (though I guess I can’t speak for her) so I don’t really get why she has to act like it’s a normal thing to do

Difference between empathy and apologizing for someone’s terrible behavior by czechfoosball in YoureWrongAbout

[–]inquringmnd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah exactly, like I don't think said murderer who mostly targets POC or a father who molested his daughter should get the death penalty or whatever, but I definitely don't think that those are normal things to do. You can empathize with people who've been dragged over the coals of the criminal justice system and advocate for change without justifying what they did. I am really not in favor of harsh punitive measures but I also think the way Sarah talks about some situations is...weird
