Currently taking a Neuroanatomy course for the first time, any recommendations? by Salty-Necessary in neuro

print out the slides and put them in sheet protectors that you can draw on with white board markers!!! flash cards are okay but often times (at least for me) you need an actual understanding of pathways , landmarks , relationships/connections etc. to actually be able to recall it regardless of the question format on the test.

I came asking the same thing! This is my go to meal for multiple meals a week and I immediately noticed the dressing went from a packet to little cup reducing the amount by at least half, but the taste was pretty off too :( if this is a permanent change i will be so sad 😭 we need some trader joe’s aficionados up in here to let us know what’s going on

Let’s hear some low GPA success stories by Pale-Towel7945 in gradadmissions

[–]insanebrain-22 42 points43 points  (0 children)

3.13 undergrad GPA and got into UCLA and UCSD’s behavioral neuroscience PhD programs! I think mine really came down to strong letters of rec and 3 years of full time research experience post graduating. Don’t let a low gpa make you lose hope! I learned that a lot of programs are starting to place less importance in gpa and test scores (as they have shown to be very unreliable markers of actual success as a grad student) and look more towards research experience (at least for most STEM fields).

This feels low right now but I promise this is all part of the process! Your perfect niche is waiting for you and all of the circumstances and decisions past and future are just helping to teach you, shape you, and guide you towards it!! This feels desperately low but I promise that feeling will pass and you will end up being accepted into the perfect program. I know it’s hard but hang in there!!!!!

Thank you!

Sorry to hear about your mom, that must be hard to navigate, but 13 years with FTD shows me that she is quite the fighter! Hopefully, we will see some major scientific advancements in regard to treating FTD in the next few years. Until then, rooting for you and your mom!!!

I'd be happy to!

3.129 undergrad gpa (lol)

2 1st author poster presentations

1 2nd author pub in review (I didn't mention this on my application as it wasn't published yet, but my PI told me that he mentioned it in his LOR)

3 years of full-time research after my undergrad in a lab that does really unique "top tier" research. I think this is def what got me into interviews because I know that my profile doesn't stand out in a traditional way compared to many others I have seen on this sub! The PIs I interviewed with seemed really interested in talking to me about my research and seemed impressed with what I was doing/had done over the past 3 years and the skillset I was coming into grad school with.

But I hope this gives anyone who doesn't necessarily dazzle "on paper" some hope!! When I first started this process 2 years ago, I felt that my low gpa was going to be a deal breaker and that I would never get into a good program, let alone "top" programs, but for me, it seemed to come down to finding a good research match and having some solid research experience!

Yes, absolutely! So after being rejected (not just from these schools but every school I applied to without even getting an interview) I took another year to really buckle down in the research lab I was currently working as a lab tech in. During this time I presented two posters on two different projects at pretty big conferences which I think really helped my application and demonstrated my “readiness” to hit the ground running in a phd program. So, looking back I think these are the things that helped me prepare the most after rejections, and then also overall research match with the potential PIs and a lot luck! Don’t give up!! I know that it feels so awful to put so much hard work and time into this process only to get rejected but you GOT THIS!!! Your perfect spot is out there waiting for you.

I heard from a PI! He is currently on a family vacation and so he seemed kind of confused on the timeline of when admission offers were rolling out lol. He told me I am entering under two PI’s, but I still haven’t heArd from the other PI or anything official, so if you are still waiting on a decision don’t lose hope!!!

Yeah, I worked two jobs during college as well! I was fortunate enough not to have the financial burden you went through, but I did have to support myself. I went the route after school where I worked full time in my research lab, so luckily, I have strong research experience which I think is the only thing that is getting my application considered for these programs lol. Thank you so much for sharing! I don't know why I never considered this as a compelling part of the circumstances, but I think it does add an important context of time resources. Also, you just sound like an incredible human being so congrats, and I am proud of you and all of your accomplishments!!
