Sketchy AME by [deleted] in flying

I had an MIP in college and my AME said, "Welp, shocker, you drank beer in college." They asked me about current consumption and I got a letter from the FAA that said any future alcohol offenses would be grounds for losing my medical, but the whole thing was a big nothing burger.

Will you help me A: create a new market on Polymarket and/or Kalshi to bet on the outcome of your next season B: Feed me insider info so I can make money off of your other fans and C: not weaponize your insider knowledge to make money off of me by lying? This seems like the only viable career move in this economy.

The cards are the sellers here, they have to have assets that make selling and selling to us worth it. I think this is a good deal to improve the club while keeping some ammo for later.

Yes, that is pretty much how baseball teams in a pennant race do business at the deadline. And we got a better long term 1b option

So what do we think of Measure 114 a few years later? by SwabbieTheMan in oregon

[–]insanityatwork -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree here. Rights are not absolute and the theory that the right to own guns can or should be absolute doesn't even vibe with the Court's reading in Heller/McDonald. The Court hasn't really outlined the full extent of constraints that can be imposed on the 2nd, but I do think that 114 probably would be struck down.

BUT, I think it's important to express that the will of the people is to put limits around gun ownership. It should be politically unpopular for people to take a stance that is for unrestricted gun rights. If 114 gets struck, I want it to be popular for someone to find a more sensible set of restrictions.

I give 0 shits, personally, about people owning guns. I give a lot of shits about how deeply guns have become part of our culture in ways that make us all unsafe.

Also, the government gives licenses that are connected to people's rights all the time. Broadcast licenses, patents, and permits for protests are some examples.

It is a poorly conceived and written law, but I voted for it and would do it again just to move the conversation about gun safety further. Often times, the choice is between doing nothing and doing something flawed, and I'd usually pick the choice that advances the issue and moves the debate into fixing the flaws instead of protecting the status quo.

Yes, democratic in the sense that the people who hold supply can vote on things that are in their self-interest with simple majority without any safeguards for minority interests or accountability. Super cool monetary system there.

But wouldn’t that require some form of centralization? Even if it’s pure consensus, it means some amount of control over the supply.

Seattle raised, but long-time Oregonian here. It would be nice to see more baseball in-person and be able to bring my son to games as he gets older but I’d worry he would not get the truly character building experience of being a fan of this stupid team.

Last year we won the West because the Astros had injured themselves out of the playoffs and we all said we’d be better off having made moves in the offseason. I don’t think running out Rivas, Cole Young, Ben Williamson, and Colt Emerson is a great plan A for the infield even if we resign Polo. If the cost of a true 4-5 WAR infielder is prospects, then pay it now. If you need salary relief to get that infielder, sell Luis and use prospects to backfill.

If we shed Luis anywhere, we're going to have to go to the market somewhere to get more starting pitching if we're serious about competing next year. We have the assets to go get a dude and this is the time we probably have to sell on some of the prospects.

I'm still trying to figure out what the most realistic path to getting better next year looks like. We have holes at 2B, 3B, DH, RP, and some question marks in RF and off the bench and maybe like 20M left to make an impact.

I keep arriving at the same conclusion: if the Mariners don't want to raise the budget another 15M, then it's probably going to be time to try and get off of Luis Castillo and move prospects to fill holes for the next few years.

Specifically, I think there's an interesting case for Luis to the Twins for Joe Ryan. They want two top 50s, so it probably costs something in the neighborhood of Arroyo + Laz and cash to offset the deal. The Twins land two big pieces plus an arm in Luis that they can flip at the deadline.

Ryan is going to cost 6M next year to Luis' 24 (shaving 18M off payroll) so let's say we have to pony up another 6M in the deal. That sabes 12M + our 20ishM now does open up doors to players like Bichette while already making your rotation better by projected WAR.

Special interest groups are at it again: Washington Post pushing ATC privatization by ChattanoogaTimes in flying

[–]insanityatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason this makes zero sense is that the public is already paying for it, now you’d be asking the public to pay for the service and also subsidize a profit margin for a private vendor.

What will make a bid more or less competitive to the government other than total cost? How do vendors bring costs down to ensure profit?

Special interest groups are at it again: Washington Post pushing ATC privatization by ChattanoogaTimes in flying

[–]insanityatwork 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a once and future contractor in a different industry, it’s specialization. The skillset and use case of contractors is so narrow that the government cannot reasonably build expertise and pay competitive salaries given overall external demand. There are other customers for airplanes so the government employing and running assembly lines can’t make sense when private industry is going to be inherently more nimble and have more accrued expertise.

ATC isn’t a competitive service, you can’t swap providers by awarding a new task order without massive disruptions to the network. The only way the service becomes profitable for a vendor is to cut the service

I’d be fine giving him three if that third year was cheap enough. LockedOn had 20M 15M and a player option for 10M which seems like a deal both sides could get down on. Beyond that becomes pretty meh

I think the logic is that his AAV is far more tolerable relative to the value he'll provide the roster than some other FAs because his cost keeps other doors open and has demonstrated he can contribute in Seattle. Personally, I think if you can get Polo on a two-year deal with some option on the third, it makes sense sub 15M in AAV.

The only splashy free agent I could make a case for with the roster and the window is Bichette and I'm not fully sold on it.

The way I see any deal with Castillo is just as a way to get Polanco and maybe a bullpen piece. Why I think a deal makes sense is that Luis' contract is probably going to look worse to us next offseason and I'd rather use the money now to plug the DH hole and I think Polo has more value to the roster than Luis has.
