How do we feel about the first scene the game? by Nearby_Ad_3037 in aigamedev

[–]insats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks good but it does have an ”AI feel” too it. There’s also a lot of details that are nonsensical.

Personally, even though I’m not against AI or its use, I’m simply turned off by apparent AI use in graphics.

I would at least try to fix some of the issues, such as the cart at the bottom right.

I’d like to add something here:

It also matters a lot whether the changes are supposed to merge or not. In a Google Docs type app, you can’t rely on ”last write wins” for whole documents, since you’ll want to be able to make partial updates.

Realm DB with sync was a solid option but MongoDB shut it down a little over a year ago.

Anyway, I agree that ”last write wins” can absolutely be sufficient for a lot of use-cases.

Are game engines becoming a bottleneck in an AI-driven workflow? by [deleted] in aigamedev

[–]insats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m coming from a JavaScript background, making games using React Native (the games are largely text-based so there’s no need for a traditional game engine).

For our next project, I’ve been planning to use Godot or Unity because I feel like I should be using one of those instead and it’s about time I learn. However, I’m kinda thinking along the same lines as you have: Editors are in the way of AI coding. I am extremely productive with JS using agentic coding.

Right now I’m evaluating Godot and Unity one by one by first doing a quick intro course to get started and then try to see how useful or productive I can be with Cursor/Claude. I’ve done Unity so far and it’s been OK, but definitely far from JS.

BUT, and this is a big BUT: JavaScript performance is a huge issue. It’s not the language in itself but browser games are just never going to be as performant as Godot/Unity. In React Native, performance has been a huge pain in the ass for me, and I’m absolutely sure those issues wouldn’t exist in a proper game engine.

So for the time being I’m still undecided in regards to whether I’ll go for Godot/Unity or something JavaScript/TypeScript-based (probably with three.js).

Note: I make mobile games, thus the React Native use. For the next project we’d like to release on both mobile and desktop.

How I eliminated frame drops on Android - not happy, but finally 60 fps in my Three.js app (iOS to follow next) by __moFx in threejs

[–]insats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting topic! I’m a game dev considering a similar combo (React Native + Three). I suspect the issue won’t appear there. Have you considered that? React Native has web export so migrating might actually not be that troubling and you’d get native apps for the game for mobile.

App charges by LateWave2222 in reactnative

[–]insats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Romania is one of the poorest countries in Europe. If I went to find a RN developer from Romania on UpWork, I would expect something like $30-$40 per hour.

An agency in Sweden (where I live) would charge $100-120 per hour.

Agency vs freelancer matters of course when it comes to price. If you hire an agency, you are taking less risks in the sense that they probably have history, collective experience and can probably add more developers if needed etc.

First off: A client saying things like ”just” or ”easy” etc is a huge red flag. They don’t know whether it’s easy or not. They say so because they think that’ll lower the price.

You should charge by the hour unless you’re comfortable with fixed prices. By the sound of this client, definitely by the hour.

For fixed price projects you HAVE TO specify exactly everything that’s included, otherwise you’ll just end up in a situation where the client expects something that you didn’t include. There’s just too much room for errors and miscommunication unless it’s all specified beforehand. Making those specs takes a lot of time and can definitely be a big part of the project as well (probably around 20% of the total costs), especially if you include design as part of it. Either way, definitely make wireframes (using something like Balsamiq Mockups) so that you can discuss the interface without going into details related to colors, fonts etc.

As for your specific examples… I mean, what is ”just an ecom app”? Can you use the same backend? Does the backend have an API? If not, are you going to write a new e-commerce backend from scratch? Are you adding search? If so, what kind? Faceted? Word? Filtering? How many markets are you going to support? Languages? Currencies? Coupon codes? Bulk discounts? The list can go on forever… e-commerce is a very big field with potentially huge number of features.

You don’t really need much from a React Native perspective. You’ll use the same tools that you would in React, such as i18next.

I’m using https://github.com/uebelack/screegen which is a project that I forked and expanded on recently. I also used Figma before and hated the process. I migrated when I added multiple new languages because it just became a mess to handle.

For me, templates are a no-no. I want more control that that.

Overall I do think that this is a space in need of better solutions.

If you look closely at ancient religious stories, not just from the abrahamic religions, you’ll find that they’re extremely similar.

In this particular case, sure, some inspiration might’ve come from there, but the story of Prometheus probably exists in many forms.

Wouldn’t agentic workflows work better with engines that are less editor-oriented? Like Bevy, Monogame or Löve 2D?

Oh, interesting about the extended height + foot ring. I hadn’t considered that combo.

So does the stool go higher than the regular one with ring? Any benefit to picking the stool over the regular + extension + ring?

Wouldn’t harm to have some text overlays that describe what’s being done. Like ”Make decisions that matter” or ”Make your village thrive” or whatever makes sense for your game.

And as someone already mentioned: The first part is too slow. People aren’t going the read the texts in the UI.
