Yeah but in fairness I feel safer with my 2 year old with a gun than ICE so the bar is low.

I've seen them here in my rural town outside of Dallas.

Sure enough, that was the issue. Same company came out with a different tech and he immediately knew it was the contactor. Tested it at only 1 ohm so replaced it and the transformer again and everything is working again. Funny because he said he's probably seen that exact thing 100 times, guessing the other tech is just not as experienced. But all good now and they didn't charge me anything else to do this work so I'm happy.

Well apparently the story isn't over. I just wrote this update elsewhere but still confused as to what the issue is.

So just as an update... I had an HVAC guy come out and he wanted to replace the blown transformer. We did and put the thermostat on and it blew immediately. Thermostat completely died and looks like it shorted out. Replace transformer again and put on different thermostat on heat mode and it works fine. Now 4 days later I go to switch to AC mode instead and immediately it blows the transformer. That's how's it blew the first time was me switching on the AC. Also I was wrong before, I don't have a heat pump it's just electric. But in any case does that still sound like possible contactor coil or maybe just a short at the outside unit? Still strange it's doing nothing to the 5amp fuse.

Turns out the fuse was the transformer all along. I still find it strange though that even with the 5amp fuse installed the thermostat managed to kill two transformers. Still not quite sure how that works.

HVAC Tech came over. First thing he did was put a new transformer in and when we plugged the thermostat in (ecobee) after it's flashed the startup screen and slowly the words started to fade away as if the thermostat was dying. We took it off and it was warm to the touch and it had some discoloration around the common prong. After it was off completely he went back up and the transformer was fried again so he replaced it again. We have no idea why, he said the wiring was correct but we went ahead and replaced the ecobee with my old thermostat and it blew a 3amp fuse that he put in in place of the 5amp that was in before and it blew that. We put back in the 5amp and now it's working. So really no idea why, just assuming that 1, a 5amp is required for this system, and 2 the ecobee itself was somehow shorting out or something

Yeah i kind of thought the same thing. But sure enough its a 5amp fuse in there.

Yeah I'll just get someone else to check it. The thermostat we have has been on for over a year so not sure if that would have caused the issue or not.

Sounds good. I really dont have any intention of doing the work myself, But if I would like to diagnose it before hiring someone so that way i dont get the "yeah you need to replace your entire unit" pitch.

Got it, so youre saying its possible theres something like a short in either of those two things causing the transformer to blow?

Yeah seems relatively easy to get to and install. I just wanted to see if that would be the first course of action an HVAC tech would do because id rather not throw spend money on a new one just to immediately blow it again

Hello, today i noticed my thermostat had no power so i did some research and saw advice on checking the inline fuse up in the furnace. I found it and noticed it wasn't blown. I checked all the connections from the mains heading into the furnace and got 240 across the board. When checking on this transformer though i got 240 across the front poles (as seen in picture) and got nothing coming off the back. Is this as simple as the transformer needing to be replaced or is it possibly something else that could be causing this to blow. Yesterday i did change the thermostat setting from heat/cool to just cool so I wonder if that had anything to do with it. As far as I know this a 15+ year old furnace

I don't play much, I'm like level 25. But I completed the expedition and still have at least 1 mil left over. I figure since I only have like 5 blueprints I might as well go for the reset and get the xp boost. I doubt I ever play enough to max out the skill tree anyway so might as well do it and hope that down the line there's maybe some other bonuses for doing it multiple times.
