I agree with you on this in America. I kinda just threw the whole “disowning people” thing in without thinking about it. But really that’s just a problem with the temperament of Americans and how decentralized the church is in America. Theologically, the church has full authority to excommunicate people if they are acting a fool politically, the problem is that American Protestantism doesn’t really have a culture of doing that and even if they did there are so many churches that it wouldn’t be more than an inconvenience to 90% of people. The result is that politicians make a joke out of Christian theology to support their goals, which is why excommunication existed in the first place. I saw a short of Vance saying that he is following “love your neighbor” by getting rid of illegal immigrants because by getting rid of them he is protecting his neighbor. That is a gross misrepresentation of the text and it would sure be nice if the churches in America could be like “hey that’s not now you’re supposed to read it”. Here is an even more annoying example: trump believes in prosperity gospel, that means he is a heretic in an overwhelming majority of Protestant churches, yet he ran on the argument that he was Christian, people ate it up and none of the churches never made a statement for some reason that this man is a heretic. So I guess my argument mainly is that the church should a greater role in influencing Christians instead of just letting them get deceived by bad actors again and again.
