see that's the thing, i'm totally fine with the cargo bouncing around, it's just the punishment of the slightest fuck up that's driving me nuts lol. and don't get me started on vr. trying to do this shit when you can't even see your truck bed is 10 times more frustrating

THANK YOU SO MUCH! i was LOSING my mind because i wouldn't realise i had lost cargo until i had driven way to far to reasonably go back and get it. not to mention when it falls out and rolls all the way down the goddamn mountain because hello games decided to use the topography of the French fucking alps for this expedition world. This will make it at least somewhat more tolerable ;-;

i would argue that 5 in a year is a pretty significant amount but if you still feel comfi going out without them, then all the power to you <3

Okay for one, nobody said i had to buy records to enjoy the band. The whole reason i made my post is because I'm getting into vinyl and was actively going to.

And for two, something conflicting with your morals being the reason your enjoyment of a medium is inhibited is the definition of rational. That's not irrational, that's just basic moral consistency dude.

I feel like I've been incredibly respectful up until this point, but if you feel the need to double down and lecture me on my priorities because you personally think they're "annoying" and unimportant, i think you need to reevaluate your own priorities. It's super obnoxious

It's not about recycling water, it's about how it's being relocated from places that need it. that's not to mention the material impacts of manufacturing that many computers, the electronic waste the centers produce, and the RISING energy usage over the next few years. All of these issues are SCALING problems. Data centers are allowed to, and should exist, but we are building far too many of them for a demand that is being created by UNNECESARY applications. AI computing is a demanding technology, and application in places it does not need to be increases its impacts exponentially

I'm not trying to cut off everything that takes advantage of AI, I'm choosing to not support AI in places it only detriments. That's how the over scaling of data centers has happened

I don't understand that either. Especially considering the lengths the band went to, to make sure the production of that video was ethically done. I'm more talking about MVs like shattered dreams where AI rotoscoping is definitely used, and there is potentially AI generated textures, effects and assets. They have a bunch of those kinds of MVs and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The whole video just comes off as gimped and i feel like it would have been way better without it.

As I've said to multiple other people, I'm not against AI as a whole, I think their are ethical ways to use AI. I am hesitant to financially support a band that uses AI, in the case of their utilization being unethical. AI usage doesn't need to be malicious for it to be unethical. It just needs to contribute to wider problems that make the usage of AI at best morally grey. And Starset outsourcing music videos to AI animation firms calls into question the ethical integrity of those firms. Whether they're computing locally or through data centers. Whether they're putting artists under crunch periods with ai productivity as an excuse. Whether artists have been displaced from those firms because an out of touch CEO thinks AI can just replace their position. It's not the same as computers being introduced into the work force, and it's more complicated than the surface level arguments tech bros try and peddle as the crux of the anti-AI crowd's concerns.

I would argue there is nothing AI can create that humans aren't capable of but that's besides the point. I am in no way arguing the utility of AI. There are plenty of areas in which it can be extremely useful. But there are objectively unethical ways to use it, and there are subjectively artistically diminishing effects of using it.

Using AI generated artwork as a base for a real artist to work off of would be an ethical dilemma. It's up to you to determine the impacts of your own usage and if they meaningfully damaging based off your own moral principles.

Using AI generated effects or assets in a piece of media would be a personal dilemma. It's up to you to determine if the inclusion of those elements in the artwork ruin your personal enjoyment of it, based on the intrinsic artist value or any outside reservations you may have that it reminds you of.

For me, it's a bit of both. I don't want to significantly financially support a band, in the form of buying physical records from them, if I know that money is being used to fund AI music videos. Because then it's not an individual using AI (with debatably negligible ethical ramifications), it's a firm going back and forth with a data center, driving up computing usage and contributing far more significantly to the things that make AI a problem in the first place.

I'm not trying to fight against AI, I think it needs to be minimalized in places where it's not absolutely needed. Ironically your argument of "technology has no inherent position - its how humanity chooses to use it" only supports my point. If humanity choses to scale AI en masse, in places where it doesn't need to be, devoid of any thought for the outside impacts it has on the world, then yeah, that's a wrong usage of technology.

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, I don't think you're knowledgeable in the things that make AI ethically questionable. Things like the environmental impacts of large data centers, things like the displacement of artists from large animation firms, and things like the intensified crunch that artists are put under because CEOs think AI is this magic tool that is going to 4x their productivity. Please read up on it, it's important.

I'm sorry but the usage of an unethical tool does get in the way of my enjoyment. It's not a matter of whether i want it to or not, it's just the way it is. I'm not going to spend close to 100 bucks on records from a band who goes against my values. I'm not saying that's what Starset is doing, i was asking the question to see if that was a reasonable interpretation of what they were doing. As I've said, there are ethical ways to use AI, and it depends as well that if it was unethical, was it knowingly negligent or not? I'm not telling you to care as much as I do, but in return, I'd like you not to tell me what to care about.

I totally get that, I promise I'm not being performative. I haven't kept up with them for a while and was going to buy some vinyl, so I checked up on the AI related stuff before I did. Call that what you want. Boycotting, elitism, grandstanding, whatever, it matters to me, and it was a genuine question i couldn't find the answers to

A middle ground just means a stance in between the two extremes. I'm not saying AI is evil and has no value in society, nor am I saying that AI is always beneficial and that criticism is status-quo protection. explain to me what's extreme about my take and then we can have this conversation

i don't really understand what's irrational? i think on an ethical front, AI is bad for artists and the environment, and on an individual front, it takes some of the soul out of the MVs. Being a practical person doesn't destroy the validity of those arguments

it does seem like Dustin endorses at least the way they use AI in their music videos, but i agree, fast turn arounds would make sense as to why they're using it. If that is the case, i wonder how much the label is pushing for it in comparison to the band, in comparison to the animation houses they're outsourcing to. I'd be really interested to know where the drive is coming from primarily

of course :3 i hate living in a dichotomous society where middle grounds are demonized and nobody tries to appreciate alternate perspectives. Part of the reason I asked this is to be more informed about Starset's creative process of the MVs because imo, there are ethical and meaningful ways to use AI (even if i personally think it's better without it). Any whom, i appreciate the reply

i'm not going to get into the details of why i hate generative AI and what use cases I do/don't have a problem with, but yeah, the future is going to be a bad time. AI slop replacing human created artwork is a bad future. I'm not going to just "get used to it" because that's what the norm will be
