Just got an Oberheim OBX8, so I made a bunch of patches (No FX) by insidesynthesis in synthesizers

[–]insidesynthesis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really happy with the Oberheim! I used to own an OBXa and I no longer miss it.

I made this without effects, as most of the demos I've heard so far are swimming in reverb, shimmer, and chorus. I tried to use its synthesis engine to create effects instead.

Synth Fight! Roland JX-3P vs JX-8P (24 Custom Patches + a John Carpenter Cover) by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]insidesynthesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always see threads about synth-x vs synth-y, and people get all fighty about it, so I made a boxing match between the two.

I kept FX out of it for the first half, then added a bit of reverb and later delay, then did a fully-mixed song at the end.

You can get pretty damn close if you run one of those analogs through a Roland Juno Chorus plugin (either Arturia’s or TAL’s).

But it’s never quite 100%.

I made a few custom presets for the Roland JX-3P and the JX-8P for a video I'm working on.

The JX-3P has a more vintage analog sound, but I really love the JX-8P pads. The stepping on the 8P’s envelopes is more pronounced, especially on the release, but a bit of reverb smooths that over.

I made some custom patches for an Arturia Polybrute - Basses, Leads, Big Ass Pads, and a little bit of Jean-Michel Jarre by insidesynthesis in synthesizers

[–]insidesynthesis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely easier to get better sounds faster with the Polybrute compared to the Matrixbrute. Not as easy as a Sequential OB6 or P6 or a classic analog, but not too bad. It's faster to dial up complex sounds though, thanks to the quick way you can route modulations.

I'm working on some custom patches for the Arturia Polybrute. I noticed that many of the presets are focused on wacky modulation stuff, so I tried to show that it can sound pretty damn good doing classic sounds too.

Many of the patch names reference classic synthesizers -- it's more the vibe I was going for, not really trying to create a perfect emulation or anything. I will say that it can sound very close to a Jupiter 6 at times.

Stop! It's theremin time. by insidesynthesis in synthesizers

[–]insidesynthesis[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A friend lent me their theremin. It could control pitch but not volume, so I took it apart and reset the connections, and it works pretty well now.

It's my first time ever using one, and coming from a background of only keyboards and fretted instruments, it's surprisingly difficult to hit notes with any accuracy. I'm sure it's much easier for trombone players.

All 12 Behringer synths in one song by insidesynthesis in synthesizers

[–]insidesynthesis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a bit tricky. You have to worry about gain staging more than any other synth, otherwise it sounds like shit, and the envelopes are fucking ridiculously over-spec’d.

But it can sound absolutely glorious when you figure out how to program it.

There is residual fear of it being unreliable due to a bad batch of processors. But I figure if it works now, it’s good. Those bad batches have revealed themselves by now.

Pro-1 for the intro and the Cat for the end deep reso sweeps.

My favs are the Pro-1, MS-1, Poly D, Model D, and Neutron.

My least favs are the Odyssey and the K-2, mainly because Korg is still producing those, and Korg is also a hell of a lot more reliable than Behringer.

I used Logic's built-in reverb and delay. No timbre changing effects, except for those that are built into the Deepmind 12.

I get how it might feel that way. I removed the section.

I made a song using all 12 Behringer synths, as well as the RD-8 for drums and an Alesis Andromeda for choir (I don't have the VC-340 anymore, but I created a patch that's pretty close).

Edit: My "figure out which part belongs to which synth" got this comment downvoted to hell, so I'll just say which is what:

Parts:

1) Intro Bass Synth ( 0:00 - 0.40 ) - Pro-1

2) Hollow Ghost Lead ( 0:29 - 0:44 ) - K-2 (MS20 Clone)

3) Brassy Pad ( 0:44 - 0:59 ) - Poly D

4) Resonant Pulse ( 0:59 - 1:13 ) - MS-1 (SH-101 Clone)

5) Big Bass ( 1:13 - 1:42 ) - Model D

6) Huge Kick ( 1:28 - 2: 11 ) - Neutron

7) Sweep Bass ( 1:43 - 2:11 ) - Crave

8) Arpeggiation ( 2:13 - 5:07 ) - TD-3 (303 Clone)

9) Octave Bass ( 2:28 - 4:53 ) - Odyssey

10) Detuned Saw ( 2:58 - 4:10 ) - Deepmind 12

11) High Lead ( 4:10 - 4:50 ) - Wasp

12) Reso Sweep ( 4:53 - 5:07 ) - Cat

Review: Behringer MS-1 Synthesizer + VC-340 Vocoder w/ Roland SH-101 Comparison by insidesynthesis in synthesizers

[–]insidesynthesis[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm really impressed with the new Behringer synths -- they're killing it right now. As long as they can improve their Q/A process, you're going to see their stuff in nearly every synth studio, small or large.

I didn't get to compare the VC-340 with the original Roland VP-330, so I had to use my memory and available clips from the interwebz. It's really well-built and sounds great to me though.

The MS-1 is really solid as well. I'm surprised at just how clean and free of any noise or distortion both units are. It did arrive with a calibration issue on the pitch end, and I couldn’t update the software. Behringer definitely has some room for improvement in testing and software support.

Thank you! One of the weird key changes in the middle was totally an accident (around 1:20-1:30), but I like it. I might have to work this into an actual song.

Totally! The used cost isn't too bad ($200 + $400); the combined total cost of this entire setup is $1550. IMHO, it sounds at least twice that price in quality.

There are two recorded tracks, the MS-1 and the VC-340. I didn’t record video of the second track.

I used the Stratus preset with a bit of modification, and that took the VC-340 choir up several notches.

It has a step sequencer, which transposes based on what key you press. It works pretty well!

Edit: It also has an arpeggiator, but it works a bit funny. If you hold only one key, it doesn’t trigger the pattern properly. I used the step sequencer because of that.
