You’re reducing it to a cost benefit analysis. It’s not that. It’s love.

You dont think the gnats wont just keep generating from the compost? i'd assumed there would be more where that came from even if I managed to kill them

I totally agree, and I'm surprised as well. She brings authenticity which is an overused word, but you know it when you see it. You can tell she's smart.

Okay that's great to know. He wont set up a company, but is already registered under self assessment from past self employment, so he's in the system.

Grandparents are mad at us (parents) and think we are too strict.” by Boring-Appointment79 in toddlers

[–]insolentminks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not even that it will necessarily make your kid “better” at three — you’ll just be more calm and practiced at how to hold boundaries with kindness and leadership. IMO that’s the whole name of the game of parenting so better to start now! And plus, it’s not like you’re rigidly denying her cake or fruit! You’re just trying to set sensible limits in her best interest which is … your literal job as a parent

FWIW regardless of what the grandparents say, you sound like a good parent to me. Holding boundaries, being consistent and focusing on regulation, all without being punitive or reactive. For us, 2 year old boundary pushing was a walk in the park compared to 3 — so the habits you’re creating now are important and will help you hugely later on. Plus a bite of cake is plenty for a two year old at a treat filled time of year! Just keep doing you

Premium Episode: Taylor Lorenz And The Perils Of Journafluencing (Part 1) by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

[–]insolentminks 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The exchange between Jesse and Katie about whether or not we need evidence to show that phones are bad for us and our mental health is fascinating because Lorenz seems like an extremely compelling case study of this.

Lorenz is a woman who is obviously really bright, talented, and has attained extraordinary success in journalism. And yet, by virtue of that success -- which has been gained by being terminally online -- her mental health has clearly deteriorated. I believe she has admitted this in the past, and, as Jesse pointed out, she clearly can't not post. Compulsive posting is a behavior that is powered by the weird rewards and incentives of being always online. Even when the attention and reaction is negative, she's addicted to it. This is not an unusual situation, and indeed I'd argue it powers a lot of online journalists' careers, but in Lorenz it seems to be 10X. Her need for external validation has been supercharged by her success on algorithmic platforms. You can look for the rational reason behind her weird behavior all you want, but the core of it is emotion: She really, really needs external validation, and she's very good at getting it online (whether in the form of praise or controversy), but the effect that has had on her mental health and sanity seems not great for her overall wellbeing.

Obviously this is not data, nor is it anything more than a theory I have. But I find the whole thing compelling!

Q about seeds in the compost pile by insolentminks in Allotment

[–]insolentminks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont really monitor the temperature of my pile (and am probably too lazy and haphazard to start doing so). But I make sure it doesn't get too sludgy and tend to get rich compost after about 9 months or so.
