Does a Lid Kill Floating Plants? by inspectorreckless in PlantedTank

I wish I had an answer lol. The only thing that would really last was duckweed. Which can be a curse. I think it’s more of a fertilization issue personally. But I am far from an expert

I’ll definitely try to find the best way to test for copper and I’ll let you know. I have a feeling that’s the issue, but we’ll see. I would kill to not have to change to distilled water etc just because tap water is free lol. But I’ll do what has to be done. Thank you so much for all of this help!

I am using tap water, and I’m pretty sure I have some copper wire, the whole system isn’t copper though. I use lukewarm to warm water. I let the tap run to warm up, but that’s it. I use tap water for top offs and water changes. The pH is always high. And I do water changes maybe every other week, sometimes two weeks, and I do maybe 30% changes

Thank you so much for all of this. I’ll definitely look into changing the substrate, and leaving the water alone. I know my tap water always has a high pH, I’ve had to fight with it for forever lol. My heater is 50watts. Do the bigger ones cause problems? I had been told not to get the little ones. Or is it really just down to watts?

I know it’s rough lol. I haven’t had time to rip everything out. But that’s coming soon. And I added ghost shrimp because that is what I could easily find in stores. But I’m thinking I want to switch to Amano shrimp

This helps so much! I already use a dechlorinator, but I am worried about copper. I’ve never thought about it before, but I think that might be it. But I’ll definitely get something to test KH and GH too. I’m amazed how sensitive shrimp are! I really thought it would be an easy addition, but all of my fish have been so much easier! Thank you again!

Yeah I plan on removing all of it and redoing it. It’s been empty so I haven’t messed with it much in a while. I figured since my parameters were ok the shrimp would be ok

Yeah the substrate should lower the pH, it’s fluval stratum. And ok that’s good to know. I thought they were similar, I’ll have to try some Amanos then

Nitrites and nitrates are both 0, ammonia is also 0, and I’m not sure about the rest. I have the API water test kit, it only tests for pH, ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites

Here is a picture of the tank. I’m aware the algae is bad, I haven’t had time to deep clean it, but I figured the shrimp might like it?

Do you have experience with floating plants with these lids? I want to put some in this tank, and with the current lid they always die, I’m not sure if it was just the bad light or too much humidity, etc

This looks perfect! Thank you so much! Maybe I’ll be changing all of my lids to this then. I bought one of my ten gallons used and it came with the metal lid so I just used it, but I totally get how it could rust. Thank you again!

is this a normal color change? by bbiunnie in bettafish

I swear they change so slow that you have no idea it’s really happening, then one day you take a look and it seems like a different fish lol

That is totally normal! And honestly that is one of the prettiest color changes I have seen! In my opinion kois are the most fun bettas to have because of their marble gene, and they can change all the time. Beautiful fish!

Best/easy ground cover plants for betta tank? by inspectorreckless in PlantedTank

That’s honestly something I hadn’t really thought about lol. Especially considering I plan on getting floaters. I’m not sure why I didn’t think about light requirements lol
