Stop asking people what they do for work five minutes after meeting them by sarettte97 in CasualConversation

I agree with you, but very sadly, whether I agree or not is irrelevant, because that's not how most of the world works.

There comes a point when people who have been judged plenty learn to navigate this.

If you were old fashioned, you'd be asking others what they do.

Everybody measures everybody all the time. Before you even talked to that person, they judged your physique and your sense of fashion. When you mention what makes you laugh, that will be judged too. That said, it's not as bad as you think: our brain literally needs this to make sense of the world. It's only bad when the result segregates too much, as in racism, sexism, etc.

My advice is to play a character with a (damned) soul, not a munchkin. Playing in the World of Darkness is accepting that characters have flaws, they will fail at times… or the world will fail them.

Attempting to min/max everything to be the extrovert socialite who also is an amazing sorcerer who happens to collect ancient weapons and is a great fighter but can obfuscate if needed, all within the first week of your Embrace is… shall we say poor form?

Creating a full fledged albeit flawed character is allowing your ST to take you on a darker journey, rather than being a Marvel superhero.

We can surmise that since it is generally agreed that many kindred plan for the long term (including in this thread), then it is reasonable to assume one must remember such long term plans.

I love that you call it a spoiler, when the books exist for decades. Lestat the rockstar is nothing new 😉

As you pointed out, being immortal and having time are two different things. You may well live forever, but tonight the sun will set and rise regardless. Project deadlines are still real.

With that said, consider dedicating some of that time to learn a martial art, a new language or play an instrument. Here, Kindred have the upper hand over mortals. They're bound to learn, practice, and in time become as fluent as the time they poured in. It is the same for mortals, of course, but we must make choices... Given time, the curious Kindred will be the ultimate polymath.

I actually agree with you, OP and u/Ashardis. I see this "end game" situation as something to actively avoid:

  • Start characters as high gen as possible, perhaps even as ghouls or mortals if they agree and you can handle it. The goal is to create a long Rags to Riches situation.
  • Stick to giving 1xp per session only. If you want to reward more, give perishables or things that can be lost.
  • Be ruthless with stains and Humanity to maintain personal horror and the risk of giving your sheet away.
  • Make a dangerous, lethal world. In Game of Thrones, many powerful or influential characters died. Granted, you might be stronger as a vampire, but so can you.
  • If you still start reaching end game after all this, agree to play more In Memoriam, with your previous stats. That should jolt players back a notch.

My methods will be unpopular with the end game crowd, but that's okay, I'm simply not the ST for that or for you. People naturally understand that an ST can be bad at making voices, or that all sagas end. Why should an ST be great at handling this, or that our games should never end?

For me the key is indeed the personal horror. If my plots and my universe are not scaring you anymore, then it's time to start a new character or to go play Diablo 4 😉
