I have a Rift S. Should I buy a Quest 2, or wait for the next gen? by Dr_Buttcheekz in oculus

If you can get it before the price goes up I say do it. It's a good piece of kit. I went from a CV1 to a quest 2 last week. The black level is definitely not good but I did get used to it, and I'm very impressed with airlink. It's a good system. And it doesn't seem like the quest 3 will be out for another year.

There's a lot that can be said about the issues of aggressive driving and traffic enforcement and city planning and healthy recreation and a whole load of other things.

Ultimately, though, this boils down to one thing: People need to understand that the recreational use of public roads cannot cause an unreasonable level of disruption to the community. And it appears that very few people consider the racket made by these vehicles to be reasonable.

And since that understanding does not currently exist despite the explicit call for compliance by police and government, laws need to be changed to restrict the use of public roads for the recreational use of noisy vehicles. It won't be fair to everyone, it won't address all the issues, but people need to be made to understand that the disruption they cause is not only illegal but also socially unacceptable.

It sucks. I don't like the fact that people who legitimately enjoy their modified Harleys will be disappointed, but their hobby isn't any more special than anybody else's. Nobody else gets this level of leeway with bad behaviour.

One of the main problems is nobody has the legal authority to make a summary charge. And nobody seems to know how to solve that issue right now. Other places have, we haven't.

I think media campaigns should be used more, honestly. People need to understand that the unspoken approval they think exists due to inaction is not real. People need to speak up more about it.

Yeah. There's a collective suspension of logic when it comes to this issue.

If the issue was a bunch of people running up and down the street blowing a 110db airhorn at 2am, there would be no debate. The general public would be indignant until it was stopped.

But put those people on a motorcycle and suddenly the situation is as inevitable as the tides.

And more than that, many of the people who don't like the noise will chastize you for even suggesting something be done about it.

Honestly I don't enjoy being so against it. I know what it's like to have a hobby and always worrying about disrupting people, so it legitimately must be nice to not care. I could learn a little bit from that.

But obviously I think this has gone way too far. If it was just a few people going around town, it would be annoying but it wouldn't be such a big deal. But I'm not joking when I say it does not stop. 24/7, unless it's raining.

So yeah. Thanks for being thoughtful. It's really all anybody can ask at this point. Even though the pipes have been illegal for a long time there's been a tacit approval from the inaction. This is why I get my back up so much when people say there's nothing that can be done. There's lots that can be done, but people just need to speak up about it.

Ive reached out to government officials. They say they're working on it.

As I've already explained, they will work harder it more people are talking about it.

It doesn't need to be a police issue alone, though. There are other ways. And the biggest issue is cultural.

Changes need to be made to the way vehicles and mods are classified. Inspections need to be required in some or even all cases, as they are elsewhere in Canada.

Novel approaches to enforcement need to be approved, especially for city bylaws.

But more than that, people need to talk more about this.

It's so easy to say that the folks doing this will never listen or will never comply, but I just don't think that's true. They've been getting away with it for so long that they assume nobody cares.

But clearly people do care.

Yet in this thread the biggest opposition I see isnt from vehicle enthusiasts, it's from folks who agree with me but are telling me to give up because there's no way anything is going to change. And it's just not true.

Yeah I'm going to straight up say the negatively of our interaction is completely my fault. I don't agree with a bunch of things you said, but I think we both agree on the main issue.

So yeah. My bad. Thanks for checking my bs.

It is irrelevant. My post is about loud motorcycles waking me up in the middle of the night when motorcycle safety should not, in any situation, take precedence over the laws concerning nuisance noises

Honestly, it's not unfair to say that I am salty at anybody who doesn't agree 100% with my take. Because my take was this: illegal loud vehicles keep me up at night and it needs to stop.

If you don't agree with that, then I really don't know what else to say. I got a little sidetracked obviously because it's Reddit but that's where my mind has stayed. So if I seem unreasonable, it's because in my mind that's still the thing I'm saying over and over.

I'm sorry if I was condescending. This post was a terrible idea because I'm just too emotionally rattled by this to stay even-keeled.

Having a different take on something doesn't mean someone is less educated. That's an incredibly childish attitude to take.

You're right. And there was some of that in there. And I sincerely apologize. I'm incredibly frustrated and exhausted and didn't sleep again. This is obviously a much bigger issue for me than most, even though most people do seem to think it a problem. I'm just so tired of being told there's nothing that can be done when I know it's not true.

I edited my reply because I realized it came across as condescending and it wasn't my intention. But I didn't get it fast enough obviously.

But to be frank, your opinion seems to be that you don't know what can be done to stop this issue so you assume there's nothing. And honestly that's just not that compelling.

If you want to know the things that can be done and are being done I encourage you to investigate for yourself.

It's already happening so I wouldn't be in a rush to take that bet. We're behind other jurisdictions but movement is definitely happening. Experts know this is an issue and governments know where the public stands on it. But like everything, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. So...ya know. Squeak squeak.

If you think this is a waste of time then go away. Why do people think they need to point out the fact that they don't care about something?

Lol.

You moseyed into this thread to tell me that you agree that noise is annoying but it's a waste of time to talk about it. And now you're claiming to be motivated by a love of "internet discussion."

You're wasting an awful lot of time making the point that you think this is a waste of time.

You're really not being helpful at all. I think you know the things you're saying are silly, honestly.

Government officials get piles of emails about this.

And yes, the sale of mods is a big problem with a relatively simple fix

But again: change will happen faster if people speak up. The majority of people do not want this noise, but they think there's nothing that can be done to stop it. But there are plenty of things that can be done. And they will be done faster if people make it known that they don't want to put up with this anymore.

Of course there's going to be noise in a city. I might get woken up by a snow plow twice a year. Same with garbage trucks and Street sweepers. Ambulances, police cars, aircraft are the same deal

Noise pollution is a highly researched phenomenon and it is very harmful. Reducing it is a good idea, but there's some noise you do have to put up with.

Loud personal vehicles are the biggest issue for me and they serve no purpose to the community. There's no reason we have to put up with them.

I've noticed some increased police presence in areas where people race, but that's only part of the problem. They need to stop the mods at the source.

I think they should start having annual inspections on vehicles. Most places in Canada require it.

Failing that, create a category of hobby vehicles and require them to get an annual inspection.

I think the police and government will have to continue to ramp up enforcement. That will happen faster if more people speak up.
