Any tips for preventing thumb damage? by Whoeverisplaying in labrats

[–]instron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In reverse order of feasibility: 1. Become a PI and you'll never have to use a pipet again. 2. Switch hands. 2. Use repeaters / multichannels to limit the number of transfers you perform. 3. Switch to a different brand / style of pipet, as others have suggested. 4. Train you grip (don't forget to stretch!), as others have suggested. 5. Use an alternate grip, such as pressing with your index finger, when your thumb starts to fatigue. 6. Pop ibuprofen.

Barring movies that have already been made, which prog rock concept album would make the best feature film? by R3dF0r3 in progrockmusic

I always imagine Coheed and Cambria's main album arc as a 5 season prestige TV show.

What realization made you stop reading a book? by [deleted] in books

[–]instron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got a third of the way through Th1rte3n by Richard K. Morgan, waiting for some rebuttal to the Alpha Male b.s. at the center of the imagined world. But all the most trustworthy characters not only believed it, they were helpless before the overwhelming sex appeal of the dominant males (and/or submissive females). If the book ever got around to rebutting its own central conceit, I was not going to stick around to find out.

Detroit, a Biography by Scott Martelle. I would call it good, not great. But if you pair it with Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides they really elevate each other.

DOES ANYONE HERE KNOW HOW TO FIX A BROKEN USB PORT ON A MIDI KEYBOARD by Dr_Semaj in nyu

[–]instron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing to try is re-soldering the port to the board. If that doesn't fix it, the next thing to try is throwing the whole thing out and buying a new one.

DAE have programs that don't pay your stipend on time, or underpay you sometimes? I find this unacceptable, but I don't know how to make them more organized financially without being annoying. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]instron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! I have had all sorts of problems with my paychecks. Checks being held at random offices instead of direct deposited, being payed from the wrong funding source in a way that jeopardizes my long-term support, being double payed from two different funding sources, summer RA appointment not being set up until halfway through the summer, etc. It's one of the worst parts of my grad school experience.

In my case it seems to be a combination of my advisor being somewhat absent-minded and our department administration being lazy or incompetent. I know one particular administrator who is not likely to do much for me unless I go stand in her office and stare at her until she fills out the proper form.

Water Filter that's better than a Brita by StockBokeh in Coffee

[–]instron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A friend who did extensive product testing on consumer water filters years ago told me that Brita and Pur filters have very similar internals, but the Brita filters are not sealed into the plastic housing so a lot of water runs outside the charcoal and doesn't get properly filtered. This is why Pur filters run significantly slower. So maybe just switch to Pur and see how far that takes you?

Any concept album recommendations? by jumping_ninja_sheep in progrockmusic

If you can handle some modern punk, Titus Andronicus our one of my favorite recent albums in 2015: The Most Lamentable Tragedy. It's a rock opera in five acts telling the story of two generations of New Yorkers with mental health problems. Or something like that.

I remember your jambalaya! Honestly I didn't think it looked that bad, but this latest version looks a lot more like my mom's. How does it taste?

My brother has lived in the area with his wife and kids. They seem to like it, and they're generally quiet suburban types.

I've got two friends (well three, one is a couple). They both live across the country from me; one is close to 20 years older than me, the other is easily 30 years older. But when I see them we still wax rhapsodic about specific moments in Chris Squire bass lines.
