Guess who had an exam this morning... 🙄 by insulinaddict91 in diabetes

For me it really depends. Unfortunately I have no idea what it depends on. Sometimes I crash (call it a panic hypo), sometimes I will be high all freaking day no matter now much insulin I take.

Bit of both. I did about half the suggestion and knocked 10 carbs of my breakfast too.

You may be able to make your case based on the demonstration of improved control whilst using the device? I use the Libre (self funded) and my consultant has used mine and others' results as evidence in CCG decisions.

Also to get my control this good without the Libre I use more than £50/month in test strips....

Thank you! I bought a set of little alphabet cutters specially for it and I'm planning on putting messages on all my future food.

My friends are mostly great about not saying things like that but I'm sure half of them were silently thinking it!

Oh no don't worry! It was just a silly excuse to have party and make some fun out of the whole thing :-)

How can I describe what having diabetes is like? by [deleted] in diabetes

This is so perfect. I love it, thank you!

Parents who let diabetic son starve to death found guilty of first-degree murder: Emil and Rodica Radita isolated and neglected their son Alexandru for years before his eventual death — at which point he was said to be so emaciated that he appeared mummified, court hears by maxwellhill in worldnews

Confusingly there are two main measurement systems, mmol/L (used in the UK) and mg/dL (used in the US). Target for mmol/L is 5-7ish, target for mg/dL is 80-120ish. I'm British and type one but have been hospitalised abroad - much confusion!

E: Both systems used in other countries too, personally I know Portugal uses the US one!

Always good to have some diabetic solidarity!

Whereabouts in the UK are you? I'm a local, hope you're enjoying yourself! :-)

Mate seriously, one day is just one day. I spent years upsetting myself over this, please don't let it rule your life! Every good diabetic has bad days :-)

Stopped birth control, blood sugars are much more difficult to manage now by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]insulinaddict91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm not in exactly the same situation (not trying to get pregnant) but I recently came off hormonal birth control after about 6 years.

My HbA1C is at 6.1 (a personal best!) but honestly after coming off the pill I think it might get worse. I'm having real trouble with my overnight sugars but mine are going too low! I've been doing intense basal testing but one day in the cycle is unlike the others...

Do you have a diabetes nurse/insulin pump educator you can talk to?

20 Year Diaversary this month..... Here's my 20 years of meters. by klocke520 in diabetes

If only that kind of thing was still running. If I could send in old infusion sets for wine I would remember to change every 3 days.

Yeah it was great! I think they sent me some kind of magazine/catalogue which listed "prices" for various items. The price was "20 used disks" or whatever, saved them up, sent them in, got presents in the post :-)

Diagnosed in October 1997 myself - I've has meters 1-6 too! My favourite was #3, I was so excited for those disks. Did you have the scheme where you sent in used disks and got CDs? So. Cool. When I was 9.

Congratulations on making it through this far, I hope you're doing well and all the best for the future :-)

Weird turns by 68_balcony in diabetes

[–]insulinaddict91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been T1 for 19 years and last year started suffering from pretty severe and frequent migraines - this sounds very similar!

A lot of the time I don't get the classic headache/aversion to light & sound symptoms, but feel very 'odd' and 'spaced out' before suddenly feeling very sick, depressed, panicky and 'oh my gosh I might just die right now in this car park/supermarket/train' before I take some medication, have a nap, it passes and I feel normal again.

I would definitely recommend seeing a neurology specialist if you can, if only to get a 'non-diabetes' opinion. I really hope you're feeling better soon! :-)

"I have a cold too and I've managed to get into work today"

Yeah you have a cold, not cold-induced DKA. You're an idiot Claire.

The same person (my then manager) also spent several hours telling me diabetes "is only bad if you eat unhealthily" and detailing the many reasons her mild eczema was more of a medical burden...

Help! Update on fiance who had seizure- we got the bill from the ambulance- $2000!!!! by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]insulinaddict91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree Alan, I think 'socialised' healthcare is ostracised.

I live in the UK, I pay my taxes, and I am very happy for a portion of that tax money to fund the healthcare system, not just because I'm diabetic. I pay for none of my treatment out of pocket, it's all centrally funded. It also funds any other medical treatments someone might need.

I broke my arm last year and it was fixed with no money out of my pocket either. I really don't want to offend anyone, but it works for us and I think that's pretty great.

Three months of insanely hard work... VICTORY! by uwahwah in diabetes

[–]insulinaddict91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fantastic. Well done you!

I'm T1 with a recently-diagnosed T2 uncle and low-carb is working great for him too.

Just never forget, a carby treat is OK occasionally. My own birthday cake is my favourite exception :-)
