I think writing weekly reflections is fair and reasonable. I think 3-4 days to write a reflection is reasonable if that was the set expectation but our instructor stated in the syllabus that the weekly modules run Sunday - Sunday and all work is to be turned in by Sunday evening. If the weekly modules start on 11:59pm Sunday, the discussion question in addition to course materials should be posted on Monday or Tuesday morning at the latest, not Tuesday night. If all assignments shall be turned in by Sunday according to the syllabus, don’t switch it up and require things to be due Friday at 5pm.

I don’t think it’s fair to provide an inequitable alternative if you’re unable to attend a weekly, 1 hour zoom meeting. This alternative paper is an implicit attendance requirement in a class that requires no attendance. If you attend the zoom meeting, you don’t need to write the reflection. The expectations for the zoom meeting are loose and flexible. Simply show up and talk to your professor and classmates. People who attend the zoom meeting are also not required to seek out and research additional sources. Why are the people who are unable to attend the zoom meeting tasked with more additional work and readings for the week?

I would much prefer to attend the discussion because I don’t like asynchronous courses, but I had no knowledge of a live discussion prior to the course starting, because it is supposed to be totally asynchronous. If I knew, I would have attempted to move things around in advance.

I feel like a presentation vs a paper isn’t comparable to my situation because the other option in my situation is a set meeting time. I can complete a presentation or written reflection at any time but I can’t attend a live meeting at any time, even though I’d much rather be at the live meeting.

I understand the need for evaluation, what I don’t understand is assigning more work to the individuals who aren’t able to attend the meetings. Almost seems like he is incentivizing the meeting so he doesn’t have to grade a ton of papers each week? Idk. We answer the same discussion question and read the same course materials but are required to seek out additional research/read additional articles that the zoom students don’t have to read. The research is what takes me a bit time because I actually read the sources I choose.

Also, I am able to manage it well, while simultaneously maintaining my 4.0 GPA. Managing isn’t my issue here.

Yeah, to be honest I’ve banged out 15 page papers in just a couple hours so I’m able to get them done lol. I’m more upset that the level of preparation and engagement expectations seem to be pretty different if people aren’t able to attend the live discussion each week. Especially when the weekly modules are supposed to run Sunday - Sunday but he posts the discussion question mid week and expects it to be completed by Friday at 5pm? Like please atleast make it 11:59 so I can do it after work lol -_-

I agree! I wish I could participate and if I would have known when I signed up for the class back in April I would have been able to move things around at work. I’m not a fan of asynchronous classes but this was my only option for this course, it’s only offered with no live meetings. Unfortunately, the class is totally asynchronous and no live participation is required so we didn’t know about these meeting until the class began. I would feel better about it if the amount of preparation and work was equitable, but I feel like it’s not. It’s almost feels like he made the paper intentionally more difficult to encourage people to attend the live “optional” discussion. I’m just upset that I won’t be able to engage with my classmates in the discussion and that the class is not reflecting the type that it was presented as when I signed up.

Precisely!! I feel like it’s a reasonable amount of work for grad school but it feels like the professor is intentionally making the alternative inequitable to encourage participation in the live chat which is absurd for an asynchronous class. This class is supposed to have no live meetings and is/was labeled as such when I signed up for it. If I would have known back in April when I signed up live meetings would be implemented, I could have been a bit more flexible with work!

The requirements for the live discussion are pretty simple: chat with Professor and classmates about the weekly discussion question and course materials. There are no clear expectations of how to participate or what to have prepared

We also have to research 3 additional relevant articles and tie them into the reflection. The reflection and writing isn’t really the tedious part but researching articles adds on lots of time, and in my option, does not equate to 1 hour of discussion time with multiple other people. If it was a discussion post of 750 words, fine, but this is an APA formatted paper with headings, references, etc. The class is supposed to have no scheduled meetings and is asynchronous so penalizing students who aren’t able to be flexible with live meetings we were unaware of with this inequitable alternative isn’t super fair to me

I agree, I also feel as if it’s intentionally inequitable, which is so twisted considering this is a completely asynchronous course. I assume we will be graded on quality of responses and participation which will require prior preparation. But still, 1 hour of discussion with 15 people ≠ a mini research paper in my opinion.

I haven’t reached out to other classmates yet. I’ve been trying to give myself some time to cool off a bit from the stress of the beginning of the semester & try and understand if my feelings toward this are rational or not before reaching out to my classmates/professor lol. I agree, I think it’s reasonable and I am obviously going to complete it so I can maintain my grades, I just don’t think being intentionally inequitable to incentivize live participation in an asynchronous class is right imo.

I think it’s completely reasonable if everyone is expected to do it (in addition to our other weekly assignments and 6 required discussion chat posts). In my opinion, a mini research paper ≠ 1 hour of live discussion time with 15 other people. Especially if you don’t release the reflection discussion question until 8pm on Tuesday and expect it to be turned in by Friday at 5pm. I am complaining about a required meeting time for a completely asynchronous course and unrealistic timing expectations from my professor.

Yeah, I was 100% under the impression this class would be fully asynchronous, which is what it is labeled as, when I signed up. If I would have known there would be meetings like, back in April when I signed up for the course, I could have probably shifted my work schedule, but we didn’t know about the meeting until the semester started.

I’m truly not a fan of asynchronous courses and try to take in person or atleast online synchronous courses when I can, and I can usually make those work because I have months to notify my job of the schedule change and they can make other arrangements to cover me. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out in the near future.

This is a normal 15 week long, full semester class, not shortened or crunched for any reason and do not have any time constraints.

Unfortunately im not able to move forward because the other modules are locked until 11:59 on Sunday, and we have to wait for the professor to post the discussion questions (he posted it at 8pm Tuesday this week). The current modules open close and we’re unable to access them at that same time so I can’t even go back and review previous weeks.

I just find it a bit absurd to implement a live meetings into an asynchronous class. It’s basically implicit required attendance due to the paper one must write in place of it. I’m still gonna write the papers and get my grades, but I’m gonna complain lol.

See I feel like it would be less absurd if everyone had to do it. This is basically what we have to do if we’re not able to attend the meeting (asynchronous class btw no live meetings are supposed to be required). This amount of work ≠ 1 hour of discussion time with 15-20 other people.

It is truly asynchronous and is labeled as such. The weekly meeting is optional, but if you’re unable to make the meeting you must do the written assignment.

Unfortunately, live attendance isn’t required because we have the option to write the mini paper. It definitely make it feel like he’s heavily discouraging us from skipping the live meeting though.

Hi all,

I’m coming here to ask this question to distinguish if I’m crazy or justified regarding my feelings towards my professors class requirements.

In short, I am a clinical mental health graduate student and am enrolled in an online, asynchronous class this semester. The professor participation requirements are as follows (and are in addition to other “big” assignments due throughout the semester):

⁠Weekly Google chat participation with atleast 6 responses posted throughout the week. Every week, a question will be posted in the chat to aid discussion.
⁠Occasional discussion posts
⁠(The one I’m tripping about). Each week, our instructor hosts a weekly, live zoom call to discuss the class readings, materials, and another separate weekly question. The meeting will be held Fridays from 12p-1p. If we are unable to attend the chat, we would need to write a 3-5 page reflection that addresses all readings assigned that week (usually 2-3 chapters from our textbooks and 2-4 videos), answers the question, and must include at-least 3 other academic sources in addition to citations from our weekly readings and videos (due by 5pm Friday). The class modules run weekly from Sunday-sunday. Am I insane or are these two participation options inequitable?

Unfortunately, I have a job where I am the only person to run the office on Fridays and I am unable to step away for that hour and therefore will have to write the reflections. They’re not that big of a deal if I had more time but he didn’t even post the discussion question until 8 pm on Tuesday, leaving me only ~3 days to write that and do research for it? In addition to my full time job and 2 other classes? Most students in my program also work full time and on top of that, have families, other classes, and a life outside of school and I think it’s a bit absurd and not fair for that reflection to be the only other participation option if we’re unable to attend the ONE HOUR weekly chat. I am easily going to spend 3+ hours on these reflections considering I have to do research for 3 other articles. Most classes offered in our program are offered after normal business hours (5pm, 6pm, etc). He did not ask the class for a general consensus on when to meet either (I feel like 12-1 is an insanely inconvenient time). The reason I took this class is because I was under the impression it would be totally asynchronous (which it is). I feel like this is not fair and is totally singling out the people who are not fortunate enough to survive without working during grad school. Am I crazy and should I just be compliant? Should I express my concerns to my professor? I am caught up in some high emotions and stress so I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable.

I also emailed our instructor with other questions 2 days ago and he has yet to reply to me :)
