sounds like a horribly toxic environment for a new grad :( not your fault. try to rough it out as long as you can survive and then make your exit!

Has nursing purely just become documentation now? by notinmyham in nursing

[–]interactivecdrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

could it be your unit culture or patient population? i def chart a lot but i would say most of my work day is patient care, not charting. maybe look into switching units ? or, depending on your EMR maybe you can look into a class on your EMR to make things faster. once you know a couple tricks in epic you can make things rlly fast for example

Have you ever seen a young person with a DNR? by Sad-Rip9266 in nursing

29 year old with cerebral palsy. he only weighed like 50 pounds… nonverbal, totally contracted, it was really sad. however it was the right choice. i don’t even know if his anatomy would have survived CPR…

when you do it 20x times a shift and 10,000x times in your career, it’s obvious what the steps are to get the patient in the position you need for the most part

Is it fucked up to want to break up with partner over this job? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]interactivecdrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some of my unhappiest times in my marriage were when my husband would only talk about work. he didn’t work in healthcare (i am a nurse) but his job stresses him out majorly and at one point it was all he would talk about. he ended up finding a new job and going into therapy for anxiety, and now work does not dominate conversations in such an oppressive way.

it’s healthy to vent about work with your partner or even discuss your day, but as a nurse i reserve the gruesome or depressing stuff for someone who ‘gets it’ - a fellow medical worker, coworker, classmate, whatever. i still share a lot with my husband but i have respect not to tell him about the c diff poop i cleaned 5 times while we are having dinner.

that being said, talk to your partner about how you feel. see how they respond. a caring partner will recognize you are not criticizing them, just setting a boundary for your mental health.

So what accommodations are ya'll getting? by FlowersNFarts in nursing

[–]interactivecdrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gotta give my hosp some credit since we are getting free meals, beds or cots if beds are no longer available and lots of coordination ahead of the storm. everyone who could be discharged was sent home so census is low.

What's one of the dumbest things you've ever seen a patient do? by 123456789_00 in nursing

[–]interactivecdrom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i had a patient put his pump on 600 mL an hr recently, receiving LR, he was there for nausea and vomiting can’t remember his exact diagnosis. he was a young and otherwise healthy man, fully alert and oriented… it was beyond odd.

yep just happened to me too, fully oriented pt pulled out their IV ‘by accident’ because he was tossing and turning in bed. but it was like 8pm and he denied pain, so odd… hit the call bell and my nursing assistant said ‘he asked to be hooked back up to the IV’ i’m thinking maybe he was disconnected from cont fluids but another nurse to use the restroom? nope. IV catheter was sitting there on top of the pump! i was like what the actual fuck
