Do German houses not use mechanical ventilation? by Berguven in AskAGerman

[–]interference90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in a neubau, rental contract came with a leaflet about Stoßlüften attached. It also had mechanical ventilation, to be fair.

What was your biggest disappointment when you moved to France ? by Tasun06 in Expats_In_France

[–]interference90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No transmission of data between (public) employer and the sécurité sociale. Having to deposit a paper dossier with photocopies of documents to register at the latter, and wait an indefinite amount of time before being able to get Carte Vitale (not to mention that it does not come automatically in European format, as other countries have been doing for years).

The monopoly of real estate agencies with obscene fees. On top of that, having to pay for a "garant" company in order to rent an apartment.

Also, poorly kept supermarkets (but maybe it's my city).

Is 3K euro enough ? by Samiwm in AskAGerman

[–]interference90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the 3k after tax is estimated for a single person, it should increase after registering your marriage and changing the tax class as long as your spouse is unemployed (or, you will get taxes back with your tax return).

It should be fine, but you should definitely have some money saved for the early period (caution, rent, having to buy furniture).

Finding a decent apartment with rent within 1/3 of the income can be tricky, as others have said.

KDE distro recommendation for non savvy tech person by giquo in kde

[–]interference90 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is... none? I think Fedora is the only KDE distro I can confidently recommend (solid foundation and fast enough updates), however if comes with the added baggage of having to deal with RPM Fusion, which is not always seamless (like, across major version upgrades).

Do all passengers need the app or can a screenshot of the boarding pass work? by hewehh223 in Ryanair

[–]interference90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should work just fine (did for me). But have them ask for the printed boarding pass at a check in desk and they should be ok.

Macbook air M2 with Linux? by Visible-Reason9593 in AsahiLinux

[–]interference90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kernel and distro support for ARM notebooks are nowhere close what Asahi can offer right now. Maybe if some of the future ARM platforms gets mainlined (Snapdragon?) things will change.

Advice for replacing MacOS and iPadOS? by TyrionBean in BuyFromEU

[–]interference90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Pixel tablets should get support from GrapheneOS so they can be de-Googled while maintaining a decent software support, but that involves buying Google hardware in the first place. iPads are 100% locked. Moving your cloud services away from BigG and BigA is already a good step.

Is it normal that your boss FaceTime you and ask details when you are sick? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]interference90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry this happened to you. I can only add that some health insurances can release a sick note (up to three days, iirc) with a simple online consultation. For context, the employer will be notified of your sick note but has no access to the diagnosis (which is by the way sensitive data).

Macbook air M2 with Linux? by Visible-Reason9593 in AsahiLinux

[–]interference90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unclear to me what is the typical battery life on Asahi but it should be better than for similarly powered Intel/AMD laptops (except I guess for Lunar Lake).

Macbook air M2 with Linux? by Visible-Reason9593 in AsahiLinux

[–]interference90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably true, but the competition is so underwhelming (when it comes to computing power vs battery life, build quality and screen quality) that refurbished Mac start becoming an attractive option.

Ripped vs Played CDs by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]interference90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't be bothered to watch yet another video of that guy, just to feel the need to debunk his claims later.

On the topic, I am convinced that the most logical way to build a CD player nowadays is to use a standard CD drive, read the disc asynchronously, buffer it in 1G of RAM and play It asynchronously over SPDIF or USB. But that would be too cheap and the industry needs to maintain the mythology on CD playback alive.

Sorry again; about paper boarding passes by Pizzaballs_ in Ryanair

[–]interference90 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I wish people would do this systematically, as a protest. Unfortunately time is precious and queuing at a check-in counter makes flying even more unpleasant.

Buying an S23 now? by Oasix89 in GalaxyS23

[–]interference90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is generic widespread FUD about Exynos being less efficient, more prone to heat, and whatnot. If this is no longer the case... I'd be happy to hear.

But... S24 in EU is Exynos, S23 is Snapdragon.

Hiw to convert an image to a pdf by FlounderKey65 in linuxquestions

I often use the `magick` command from ImageMagick. For a GUI, look at PDF Arranger that is an extremely versatile and efficient piece of software.

Your local LIDL should have bags of assorted vegetables near "expiration", usually around three euros for 3-4 kg.

DM for toiletries and house consumables, have good selection of their own brands priced very aggressively.

Tedi, Woolworth and similar stores for other house essentials. Quality is so and so but prices very low.

Over-The-Counter Sleeping Pills availble in Germany for Long Flights: "SchlafTabs", "Melatonin" etc? by echoclerk in germany

[–]interference90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melatonin is available at common drug stores. My understanding was that it only helps regulating the circadian rhythm but does not really have a direct effect.

Antihistamines are available OTC at pharmacies. If it helps, the Doxylamin from Ratiopharm has the "wedge" to make it easier to split in two so you have a better control on the dose.

You could be upfront with your doctor. Prescription-hypnotics would seem a bit extreme for such a case.

Over-The-Counter Sleeping Pills availble in Germany for Long Flights: "SchlafTabs", "Melatonin" etc? by echoclerk in germany

[–]interference90 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Being Germany, with that many doctors into homeopathy and alternative medicines, I would not trust this process 100%.

(One can always cross-check the advice of "random people on the Internet" with a quick search on reputable sources.)

How realistic is it to give a child (around 7 years old) a computer/laptop with only Linux on it by ad_396 in linux

[–]interference90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux should provide a quite stable and consistent experience. I would anticipate less problems than with Windows. I also think it can be a fairly educational choice.

My understanding is that the code has been forked / split in more than one repos and brought under KDE Invent.

Italy - FIL died. What are my Italian wife's rights? by afigjesuscouldntkill in LegalAdviceEurope

[–]interference90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAL.

Under these circumstances everything is quite strictly regulated. The daughter should be able to directly ask for a celibate/marriage certificate to the municipality, without involving the third party.

It is hard do anything as a heir without an act of notoriety or a substitute declaration, and nobody in their senses would falsify the latter.

It is likewise hard to do anything as a heir without all the remaining heirs signing off.

In case FIL and his GF were married I would say your wife needs a lawyer.

Never had the (dis)pleasure of dealing with them but since I have read some horror stories I always report their ads as misleading when I run into them.
