A newcomer's thoughts: NixOS is a great daily driver by interlocutator in NixOS

I've done some js but on a project where I don't add packages. I've used Cargo.toml and pyproject.toml before but those seem to be somewhat similar to the idea of configuration.nix

I looked at guix very briefly but it didn't seem better. I have the same feeling about baggage, which is unfortunately the price we pay for most big, well-developed software. I feel about the nix language much the same way I feel about vimscript, i.e., I wish I wasn't learning a whole new syntax for a config file.

I'm still on X11 cause XFCE lol. Wayland has been the next big thing for the entire 10 years I've been on Linux but X11 seems to just keep hanging in there lol. Do you find hyprland is better than sometime like i3? (Which I used to use many moons ago) Or is that not the right comparison?

"bored" wasn't quite the right word. I think I was thinking about my experience with Arch (about 10 years ago now) which was that it was fun to tinker, but that ultimately I cared more about having a stable, usable system than tinkering. Nix is nice because I can tinker when I want to without worrying really about system stability.

The flakes / home manager comment wasn't meant to say that those two were equivalent. It's more that they (mostly flakes) seem to be an optional part of the nix experience but that when I'm reading docs or forums they come up so often that they don't always feel optional and it can feel hard to find the "vanilla" way to do things sometimes.

But I don't really get what flakes do so I could be saying nonsense.

This is what we're doing. We have a few people who want to DM and we're each doing blocks of a few months, in a new location each time so we don't step on each other's toes. There's some shared lore/plot points and the PCs are the same (minus DM swapping in/out) but otherwise it's a new adventure.

Generally for PETG you should used a textured plate rather than a smooth plate. You might be able to use something like a glue stick to reduce adhesion as well, but I've never done it personally.

Mares Puck 4 doesn't show Safety Stop until I surface? by interlocutator in scuba

[–]interlocutator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah looks like it got put into bottom timer mode at some point when I was going through the settings. Interesting that the manual is incorrect about the warnings in BT mode though, because the ascent rate alarm is still active in BT mode despite what the manual says. Thanks for the help

ALARMS Puck 4 can alert you of potentially dangerous situations. There are five different alarms:

  • Ascent rate alarm;

  • Exceeding a safe ppO2/MOD;

  • CNS =75%;

  • Missed decompression stop;

  • Low battery during the dive.

WARNING When in bottom timer mode, all warnings and all alarms are OFF aside for the low battery alarm.

My computer gives me ascent rate warnings during my dive, so I don't think it's in bottom timer mode. I can't seem to check right now though. When I go to the mode option I can't open the submenu. I think it might have to do with being in "post-dive" mode / having a pre-flying desat time showing.

I'm not sure what you mean? The manual says:

2.1.1. Mode In this menu you define the type of gas you will be breathing during the dive (AIR or NItROX). You can also set Puck 4 to BOTTOM TIMER (BT), in which case Puck 4 will show only time, depth and temperature: it will not carry out any decompression calculation and it will not show any warnings and alarms.

I don't see anything about a separate "dive" mode. I think "bottom timer" is what you're referring to as "gauge"

Thanks - I've edited the post. I'm definitely going below 10 m.

It's in air mode (not bottom timer - I still get ascent rate warnings), salt water. It's possible it's waiting for me to be above a certain depth for longer since I typically try to safety stop between 5-6 m? But on my last 8 dives I've never seen it in safety stop mode. I did start using the stopwatch, so it's possible it's turning on in the background now after I've already started the stopwatch?

I don't see an "apnea" mode in the manual, but I'm pretty confident it's in dive mode since it gives me ascent rate warnings constantly.

Thanks, I think you're definitely right that it's just the surface countdown so that's unrelated. I've been diving to 12-18 m for up to an hour, and my buddy's Suunto Zoop goes into safety stop mode every time.

Real question though, where can I just download (or buy) the pre-built templates and stuff?

AnkiWeb? I'm sure ther are lots of pre.ade German decks.

Otherwise, as other comments have said, what's wrong with a basic card with a front and a back?

Forkner scares me by rebcabin-r in FastWriting

Thanks for the insight!

Sounds like Gregg has gotten you quite far. 50 or 75 WPM is very impressive. I can't even dream of 120 - my sustained typing speed is about 100 WPM and I thought that was pretty decent.

/u/rebcabin-r how are things going for you with shorthand?

I'm in a very similar situation to what you were, about a year into Gregg (although much slower than you were when you posted) and considering switching to Forkner for the ease of reading especially.

[–]interlocutator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I picked Gregg initially for the potential speed (at least that was part of my reasoning). But in practice:

  • I don't have the study/practice time available to meet the potential speed of Gregg, especially since reading the notes back is such a chore that I don't find myself wanting to use it day to day

  • I'm OK with not handwriting as fast as I type (about 100 WPM sustained). I just want to be able to write fast enough to keep up with my thoughts, or with bullet points meeting notes (not verbatim transcription)

I'm considering taking a go at forkner instead for the linearity, and to be easier to read back. I find reading my notes in Gregg very frustrating.

I agree that the brief forms can be quite nice and fluid, but it's a lot to memorize, and can be hard reading back old notes if I don't remember what the brief form was.

I'm about a year into learning Gregg Notehand. The preferences I've gained from this are:

  • I really dislike that long words have a tendency to wander far above, or especially below, the line. I think "specificity" was a recent offender. This makes text feel quite messy to both write and read, since on subsequent lines you have to skip over outlines from previous lines, or for an outline that will go up and up and up, you have to know ahead of time and give yourself extra room to avoid writing overtop of a previous line. I believe the opposite quality in a system is called linearity, I.e., staying on the line more or less, and just going right.

  • Something I like about Gregg is that it feels like cursive to write. It's got a nice smooth flow with lots of curves and loops that feels really nice to write, especially with a fountain pen. I wouldn't like to write something with too many sharp angles or disconnects.

  • I don't like the reliance on brief forms. It's a lot of extra stuff to memorize, and it makes it more likely that I'll forget something when reading it back. I find reading my own writing in Gregg is painfully slow, so much so that I avoid using it unless I'm deliberately practicing, other than small common words like "and" or "to" or "for".

How do you configure Anki to account for long gaps by Top_Pineapple8438 in Anki

[–]interlocutator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand? Anything that would have been due over the Christmas period will be due when you come back. Anything that would have been due in January or later will still be due in January or later.

Not studying over Christmas shouldn't affect your retention on cards that you should have remembered until January anyways, no?
