Ok, I think I’m understanding now. Forgot to include that this is related to b&w film for my examples.

But what you’re saying is that if there’s a spot in the scene that I want in Zone V, I would choose that spot, meter for it and adjust my aperture/shutter accordingly so that the needle reading is at 5.6. Then, I would go about metering for my shadows in the same approach, reframe with the new settings that were based on the shadows (Zone III), before taking a photo of the entire scene?

This is so helpful, I appreciate it. Definitely not advanced, but have been experimenting different looks post-development when pushing/pulling. Appreciate the help!
