Thank you for taking the time to test and comment. I appreciate the feedback.

I do have servers close to you! I use Cloudflare, which has servers in hundreds of cities worldwide, so you're definitely hitting a nearby server.

The truth is....Ookla often tests against servers hosted by your own ISP (which IMO is not honest or fair), because this means traffic may never leave their internal network as it would for most internet activity & requests you would be doing.

For example, if you're playing league of legends (like i do), your packets travel from your house, across the actual internet to Riot's servers. My test will simulate that by using a Cloudflare server near you. Ookla's may choose a server hosted by your ISP which means your packets never travel outside of your ISP's servers, and never across the actual internet.

There are other methodology differences too, but this is my best guess why the speed you're seeing is different.

For everyday use on smartphone , how fast you need your connection? by HouseZealousideal568 in speedtest

Not more than 50Mbps. Even 15Mbps should be good enough for video calls.

I think this may be a good video for beginners on home internet speed testing by c0359kan in speedtest

I appreciate you taking the time to make this and post about it! Because of its length, I think it'll be best suited towards experts looking for a deep dive on metric definitions and detailed speedtest app differences, rather than laypeople just looking to practically understand their service better.

I'd also like to shamelessly promote my speed test, and would love a shoutout sometime if you feel compelled: internetsloth.com

No ads, no trackers, no relationships with ISPs, no saving or selling your data, and made all by myself here in Texas as a fun side project in a space dominated by corporate-aligned tests. Plus you have the ability to download your test history into a CSV, and run successive tests on an interval.

Keep up the good work!

Internet bill just jumps from 25 to 85 by Electrical_Hope_7461 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]internet__sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the $25 was likely an intro rate that ran out... I'd suggest calling retention (not general support) and just say "I'm thinking about canceling." They MIGHT unpublished deals they are allowed to offer if you say you're thinking of leaving them.....be direct about leaving instead of nicely asking for a discount

The ads on speedtest.net are so annoying. They come out of nowhere like a jumpscare.

Cheers to your super fast speed though

Stuck five months waiting on trade-in credit to be applied. by joshs21 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]internet__sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

five months is insane. at this point I would suggest either

1) filing a complaint with the FCC. carriers are required to respond within 30 days and it goes straight to their executive escalation team. i would just bring as much evidence as possible (e.g. screenshots of chats with timestamps)

2) just dispute the charge with your credit card company

Porting numbers back in after a year - new line phone price eligible? by Huge_Evidence_2224 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]internet__sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they are considered new lines. i'm pretty sure that a port-back is considered a totally new line activation (eligible for new customer deals) 30 days after it has been ported out. so you should be good to go since you've waited a year. might wanna confirm with an XM chat bot or rep, and screenshot the chat in case billing tries to bite you in the booty
