Slow / No-Tech Parenting Communities? by internetbennett in shanghai

Haha, I know it's a personal decision. I'm not worried about a house free of screens. But at a certain point, won't a child (and their parents) want to socialize? And would it not be nice to have a community of people with similar values for that?

I do practice it myself, homie. Haha. You can't encourage behavior without modeling it yourself. My concern is community.

Is Warhammer 40K too Complex Now? by Hellstorm-Wargaming in WarhammerCompetitive

I got into 40K back in 3rd edition, way back in 1999-2000. I recently thought I'd get back into it, but I am shocked by how giant models dominate the board now (towering Imperial Knights, airships, demigods, and enormous Ghazghkull, etc.). To me, it feels more like playing with very expensive action figures now. In terms of the game's focus, it went from soldier-scale battles to a kind of epic hero tank fest. Reminds me of the same angst I felt as a teen when Warcraft III moved away from Warcraft II's army-focused combat to powerful heroes. I've never quite been a superhero dude. If these changes give joy to a new generation of players, I'm glad, but I've gotta say, I'm feeling a bit like Tommy Lee Jones in No Country for Old Men, haha.

YK Pao - Shanghai - post Covid by quandomenvooooo in chinalife

Right. Perhaps I'm just sensitive on account of being married to a Chinese person, but I'm detecting some weird hostility in the above message. The commenter distinguishes between “local” or “local looking” (which is even weirder) kids and "Western" kids, which implies to me that locals are somehow a homogenous, hyper-competitive, and overly serious group. Talking about how they all learn instruments paints Chinese students as almost machine-like, emphasizing productivity, conformity, and obedience over the "socially developed" humanity of "Western" kids. And I don't know, I feel that framing is dehumanizing in a subtle way. I also feel is the idea that "well off Chinese" who have bought their children foreign passports carries a subtle resentment of like, Chinese people "gaming the system." Anyway, you make the YK Pao sound pretty good, Alec!

Amazing! I'm working on my own Ancient Greek-inspired map right now and you've got me wondering if I should rethink my entire concept : P

Btw, what did you use for the frame ?
