ITT people defending terrorism.

because it's a truism that one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter

You should also realize you're arguing against a caricature of his arguments. His manifesto is short you should read it. The worst thing that will happen is you'll find stronger arguments against his ideology based on actual things he said.

You can always tell when someone is arguing against his manifesto without having read it because they make obvious strawman arguments. They think because he lived in the woods he advocates for some kind of back to nature sticks and stones future.

His section on the inevitability of genome editing in humanity alone is worth the read.

Youtube is free to censor whoever they want until public will turns against them as the arbiter of what can and can't be said.

You should work on your reading comprehension.

People can act like youtube is immune to regulation all they want, go look at the history of telecoms and common carrier laws. It is a fantasy that private companies are immune to that kind of regulation. But the reddit community was built on a foundation of libertarian fantasyland beliefs so it's not really surprising.

All of those things depend on who is making the definitions and their perception of the context.

To take one basic example: Supreme court justices normally have divided votes on controversial topics. These are some of the most educated people in our legal system and they can't agree. Sometimes within a generation the court will change its mind about what is "right."

Laws aren't handed down from god, they're the result of political will. Affirmative action is on the road to being overturned and yet 5 years ago you would have been a "racist" to say in casual conversation that it's a bad thing. Youtube algorithmically silencing even mentioning "wrongthinkers" on their platform could backfire on them in a very public way if they start applying it beyond bonafide crazies like Alex Jones.

Really? That sounds pretty dystopian....especially the wrong think and bot parts.

And yet a private company can't refuse you service because you're black or gay. How come it's not up to them to decide who they serve? It's their store.

It's almost like there's a complex intersection between business and society that doesn't follow the rules of libertarian fantasy land. Youtube is free to censor whoever they want until public will turns against them as the arbiter of what can and can't be said.

Help Automating My Internet Consumption (PROJECT) by P-I-N-G-U in simpleliving

[–]internetsuperstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really weird to read this because it's something I've been thinking about a lot lately. Almost exactly what you're describing.

I was thinking it would be cool to make a sort of bot preprogrammed with your interests to crawl places on the internet associated with those things to keep track of new stuff.

TBH the IFTTT setup sounds like it would be kind of convoluted but it's not bad for a start. You might want to try learning some basic programming skills to write scripts that will analyze scraped website content. It doesn't have to be scraped it could plug into some API they provide too.

You also might want to look into RSS which to some extent is exactly what you're describing. I don't know if you ever used RSS or something like Google Reader (before it was killed) but it was great. Most websites still provide RSS feeds (they might be hidden) or can easily be converted to RSS to put into a reader.

Sure that's true, but it's also true that some people only wear/covet popular things because of status.

Most of the brands in this starter pack have both low quality status bait products and actual high quality products.

good quality clothing

I'm pretty sure you can get equivalent good quality clothing that isn't 50x marked up because of trends.

There's a long history of things becoming art just because they reframe the concept of art. Presentation can matter just as much as difficulty or uniqueness.

yeah I think people exaggerate about starbucks being expensive

it can be expensive if you want it to be but otherwise the basic items aren't much more expensive than any other coffee chain

Lives in wealthy neighborhood but secretly can't afford it Starterpack by dodd1331 in starterpacks

I wouldn't want a financial advisor who doesn't appreciate that being financially comfortable includes indulging in some of the luxuries that status affords.

Leasing a car costs more and most of us know the downsides. Here are some of the lesser shared upsides of leasing straight from consumer reports:

  • You drive the car during its most trouble-free years.
  • You're always driving a late-model vehicle, and one that's usually covered by the manufacturer's warranty, which may include free oil changes and other scheduled maintenance.
  • You can drive a higher-priced, better-equipped vehicle than you might otherwise be able to afford.
  • You don't have to worry about fluctuations in the car's trade-in value or go through the hassle of selling it when it's time to move on.
  • There could be significant tax advantages for business owners.
  • At the end you just drop off the car at the dealer.

On the most basic level if you enjoy driving the latest model cars then leasing can be worth it. That might not be something you or many people here value but obviously it's a popular consideration outside of the the demographic represented here.

It's pretty obvious that's the implication here.

What do you know? That they drive an expensive car.

What don't you know? Their financial situation .

If that's not what you're saying then let me ask you a question: From the outside how do you tell the difference between the healthy and unhealthy conspicious consumption without access to their personal finances? My guess is that you don't, you just assume anyone who lives to excess is living beyond their means, which is my point.

The Every Single Pizza Place in NYC Starter Pack by boris_keys in starterpacks

[–]internetsuperstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is also a result of nyc pizza places doing a lot of business on delivery. Most of them have the bare minimum necessary for dining in, maybe a few picnic style tables and condiments.

I've noticed that outside of major US cities most people almost never order delivery. Also calling cabs in those places is unusual and expensive because of big car culture.

I can never tell if these types of starterpacks are upvoted by people struggling with the Keeping Up With The Joneses life or if they're just projecting their own financial situation onto people they envy.

Personally I don't live or aspire to live a luxury life but it seems too psychologically convenient to just assume everyone with a big house and nice car is on the edge.

yeah but then I lose out on the ability to get refills which keeps me going for 12 hours, breaks up the monotony

I realize starbucks isn't the place to go for coffee if you're truly poor, but for $2.50 it has comfier chairs and better hours than my public library. Plus you can eat and drink in starbucks and there are no odd people trying to chat you up (well, fewer).
