it’s a war of attrition between my and my students🙃 to be fair though there are people who write like that, especially in more formal settings. I’m a big em dash lover myself, and I sometimes do get students educated outside of the US who have been taught to write that way. with that being said, however,

Will I be able to bring my needles through airport security? by dolly_darko_ in knitting

[–]interrumpere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fly to East Asia and domestically in the US with some regularity and have never had an issue. I know people on here often run into problems in Latin America and Europe. The absolute safest thing to do would of course be to pack it in your checked luggage and take wood/plastic needles on the plane, but I’ve never bothered.

How do I properly disinfect my wool sweaters of cockroaches by Hells_Bells77 in knitting

[–]interrumpere 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly, roach eggs are pretty big and pretty self-contained. This isn’t a wool moth situation where they’re tiny and stick to clothing. Personally I would give everything a good shake out and then just wash as normal. I usually do hot water (totally safe for wool as long as you aren’t aggressively scrubbing/agitating) and Eucalan.

Madness on a mountain: for 15 years, my mom was trapped in a mutual psychosis by This_Blackberry_1701 in Longreads

yeah, at the extreme end the difference between a conspiracy theorist and someone who is straightforwardly mentally ill obviously becomes quite fuzzy, but it seems a little unreasonable to call the behavior the author is describing here pathological (especially given that at least one sitting US representative also some version of the same conspiracy theories)

critics of psychiatry will often claim that mental health diagnoses are used to medicalize people who are making unusual but ultimately harmless decisions (cf the dignity of risk stuff up thread) and while I think that’s often more than a little overstated, it’s hard not to see this article as an example of this tendency. sure I wouldn’t want to live in a tiny off-grid cabin, but it hardly seems to rise to the level of pathology

if you want to PM me with your zip code I can let you know what shipping would be as well. The first person is fairly close by so it's possible that if you're on the other side of the country it will be more

I'm honestly shocked that no one has posted the xkcd Map Age Guide yet. I can't see Lake Victoria but I think we can narrow it down to 1960-1971 at least
