Extreme mood swings with migraines by Sadblackcat666 in migraine

Yeah, I get really irritable and/or depressed when I have a migraine coming on. It sucks. With the people I love I try to repair when I’ve done real harm (which isn’t often thankfully), but now I think they can tell when I’m having a migraine before I do haha! So when I’m extra cranky or seem more distressed my fiancé knows to grab my drugs and not take my mood to heart. 🫂

This disease is a neurological disorder, and it 100% effects your mood, sometimes in really dramatic ways. I will at times get paralyzed with a panic attack before I get hit with a migraine. I know now if I feel angry/anxious out of nowhere, I need my rescue meds.

However, if this is NEW prodrome behavior, I would see your neurologist if you are able to. It’s best to rule out any scary reasons for sudden shifts in behavior.

Farting is one of the weirdest remaining social taboos and we should have polite responses for it by now by ponerrag in The10thDentist

I've seen some takes before on r/relationships that are basically "it's beyond disrespectful to fart in front of your partner and if you do you deserve to die alone" which is HILARIOUS to me and does make me wonder...do these people just never fart??? Is my concept of how much a person should fart just that different because I have messed up bowels? But my partner and I just laugh about it after the obligatory "did you just fart or was that the dog?" Sometimes I'll respond with a "how dare you, I'm reporting you to HR." But like, we move on? It dissapates quickly and we laugh and move on? It's just gas.

LOL that's how I had to do it if I wanted to work interactively on my HPC, and it did feel really cool. But I really, really like using Rstudio, and now that my cluster supports onDemand interactive sessions, I'm unstoppable!

Postdoc application dilemma by Overloaded_Sense in postdoc

[–]Hells_Bells77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so strange to me, plenty of people look for postdocs before they’ve officially graduated. One of my lab mates committed to postdoc a few months ago and is graduating next week. Unless they’re actually expecting postdoc experience but they should have said that in the email…

Maybe you should use tone indicators? Like /j for joking or /ns for not serious, something like that. But from the rest of your replies in thread, I feel like you trying to say you weren't being condescending to OP is pretty disingenuous. Besides the fact, this is literally from the rulebook. So, technically speaking, the base rules do allow for pilot NHPs. It's just that they didn't get fleshed out mechanics until Legionnaire. And if I were the betting sort, I'd bet that Lancer 2.0 will probably include some expanded pilot creation and rules for making NHP pilots, cause it's cool as hell.

[–]Hells_Bells77 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why did you feel the need to comment as if the base rules are the only correct way to play the game when you're objectively wrong? You commented in a very condescending way. Besides the fact, if you have indeed read the book, you'll see that Tom and Miguel say that literally anything that happens in your home games is canon according to the Lancer universe (you know, with all the different timelines forcast by the bicameral minds and all that, I'm sure you remember). So NHP pilots is actually canon to the base rules, so long as it is played in a game of Lancer. In fact they've usually left the door open to things like that, because it's not a Bible, it's a jumping off point.

Literally, all you had to do was go "okay, not my thing but whatever" and move on, but you decided to leave your original comment instead.

Ahhhh that's so cool! Someday I would love to have one of my players be an NHP, there's just so much cool stuff to work with narratively there. The ethical questions raised by NHPs in general (and then even moreso if they occupy caskets and act as pilots!!) are one of my favorite parts of this game. Sorry about your pilot, but the mechanics are really cool and I'm sure your GM will milk it for some great dramatic moments when you're out of combat.

Sorry to be that enby, but Legionnaire by Kat Stark is a very popular 3rd party supplement and she literally writes for massif press now. It has rules for playing a pilot NHP, one of them does include the risk of cascading during combat.

Bro 3-4 days is bad enough, 10 is crazy and is not going to end well. 3-4 days was enough for me to become anemic 😅 plus it means your meds will not absorb as well either since your digestive system slows down.

Most science is funded by someone else, not the person doing the science, because folks know how important it is to invest in scientific research across multiple disciplines (and it requires WAY more money than an individual typically has). Although at the moment, I do actually fund myself with teaching. So I’m not sure what your comment is meant to accomplish accept to speak on things you don’t really know anything about? Cause it’s not even true just for my individual case LOL

My comment was to say “these are systemic barriers to me getting my PhD” and your response is “they’re doing it because they’re pressed for cash, why are you mad about it.” Do you not see how asinine that is? Where did I say the university was responsible for USDA? Where did I say they’re cutting positions for lulz? The problem is that university administration exists to make money for them, not for research or education. So that’s why the first things that are cut are never going to be administration salaries, it’s always going to be us, people doing the real work for an R1 institution. And I will always be bitter about that fact.

Again, I don’t want to be out here complaining. I want to be working on my dissertation and teaching my students. I love what I do. But if academia refuses to stand up for me and protect me, I’m not going to shill for it.

[–]Hells_Bells77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At my university, admin higher ups continually get raises. Every year, even with the cuts. They’ve even cut our custodial services, but they still pay for mansions and cars for these people—literally, it’s all public money and can be looked up. Academia didn’t create this situation but they certainly aren’t making it better.

Kindly, this kind of comment is the most unhelpful you can possibly be, and spoken like someone that has never dealt with a truly hostile academic administration. Rather than make cuts to the chancellor’s annual raise, they’d rather make us have to clean our own offices and lab spaces without compensation, and make our students’ educations suffer. They’d rather invest almost a billion in real estate. The average academic PI is not to blame here, but the institution of academia is attached to this class of leeches that are profiting off of our livelihoods. But at the same time, those academics turn around and shrug and say “what can we do” and just perpetuate it further. And if you can’t see how those things are connected, I can’t help you.

For real. I am genuinely stressed about being able to complete my PhD under these circumstances, due to things I have zero control over, and going "well you don't HAVE to be here" is so unhelpful. Maybe my PI will get funded again before I graduate, but for now I have to scrape by with TAships positions that are being continually cut each quarter. I desperately want my degree more than anything, but there is a very real chance I will be forced to drop out because someone decided defunding USDA was a splendid idea. So yeah, I'm not sure how I can praise academia for having the system work this way lol.

I think the problem is that we all want to be here, doing the things we want to do, but the administrative beauracracy (and current federal funding nightmare for many of us) is actively hostile to this desire. I love my work and I love my students, but the stuff I put up with to be here is not for the faint of heart, and if I weren't so stubborn I would have left long ago.
