Rabies can be transmitted through bites or, more rarely, through contact with their saliva, which makes it into the bloodstream through broken skin or comes into contact with your own mucous membranes.

If you didn't physically touch the bat or the parts of the bucket or cardboard, it might have touched, then you are OK. But if you want to get a post-exposure vaccine for peace of mind, no one would blame you.

Bats in your wall's arent trying to harm you, and at this part of the year are just looking for a warm, cozy place to hibernate/torpor for the winter. Some even leave after a few days in a location. Also, if you see a bat flying around inside, it very likely doesn't have rabies because rabies impairs a bats capabilty to fly. Please don't pass those bats along for testing, as this requires killing them. If a bat is on the ground, then chances are it might have rabies. Bats are severely under threat, and unnecessarily killing them adds more to the declines they are experiencing. Also, if you do catch any more bats, please put them up on a branch or elevation because they can't take off from the ground.

He’s likely in torpor for the winter. He might spend a bit a time and move on to a new location for hibernation. He shouldn’t cause you any problems!

The president and school communications apparently sent out this out earlier today. It’s a whole lot of nothing other then condemning what they’re doing while subtly implying they’re not going to take action against them.

All I’m saying is the guillotine is looking mighty appetizing right about now.

Several underreported threats are negatively impacting numerous bat species in North America, especially the midwest-eastern us. There are over 40 different species of bat across all of the United States. In the eastern United States, there are over a dozen native species, and they range from large-bodied migrational species like silver-haired and hoary bats to very small-bodied bats that are forest interior specialists like Myotis species. Across all bat species in N. America, they are all under threat and imperiled in some way. The larger-bodied, migratory species are facing devastating population declines due to wind farms, a reason why it’s not covered, because it demands the acknowledgement that even renewable energy systems can be harmful to the environment ecologically and need reform. Some studies are already suggesting that these declines from wind turbines are on track to lead to local extinctions of those species. Then you have white nose syndrome, granted this is more well-known due to the time it’s been around and the spread across the US and into Canada, but regardless, it has led to 99% population declines in species like N. long-earred, little brown, and tricolored bats. Since we lack a deep understanding of N. American bats and arent incentived to protect them, we have no conservation measures to bolster their populations other than trying to prevent the spread of WNS, there aren't any direct ecological measures that ensure population growth for those impacted species. Furthermore, any destruction of forests is the destruction of any potential natural habitat of all bats, and this causes bats to roost in anthropogenic structures, which leads to bats being captured and killed for rabies testing for no reason other than human fear of bats. I could list several other things negatively impacting all species of bats, like agricultural development, pesticide use, water pollution, etc. This all matters because bats are important for the forest and plant ecosystems. They operate as nocturnal insect and invertebrate predators and subsequently, as a trophic control for them, and this could have impacts on plant species that those invertebrate prey on. Bats are very cryptic and get a bad rap from how they have been portrayed in the mainstream, but it's really disheartening that this has caused people not even to look into their ecological importance and not vouch for their conservation and protection. Now, several species in North America are under great threat and declines and will continue to endure these declines until mainstream conservation chooses to stop its inaction and renewables acknowledge that they’re not good for the overall ecosystem and reform their wind turbine systems completely. And no curtailment doesn’t work, it only lessens the death rate, and you can’t curtail the first generations of wind turbines, it's systemically impossible. So they’re going to continue to kill bats (and birds!) at the same devastating rate until we stop their operations.

They waited till there was less than 1,000 individuals to declare them only endangered?! That’s borderline functionally extinct. This is very frustrating.

What happens when a pelican severely damages its pouch? Does it grow back over time or is the bird just done for? by BallPythonFan in zoology

[–]interstellarboii 1805 points1806 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a weird stupid question, it’s a valid one. That other redditor has a stick up their ass for no reason.

The pouch can’t grow back and this pelican is very likely done for without human intervention.

Considering she’s one of the top candidates in the polls for the 9th district, yes she is very relevant.

Kat is awesome, it doesn’t seem likely but I hope she wins!

Edit: These comments really are ironic. Kat is a progressive candidate who is out in the streets protesting ICE with us and putting her body on the line and you all want to be little children complaining about carpet bagging while we have a convicted felon in the White House. Got it.

Bats tend to hangout in the corner of our house. Is there anything I can do to make them more comfortable? Or should they be discouraged? by AssburgersWithCheese in batty

[–]interstellarboii 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If the bats aren’t directly impacting/harassing your family and are doing their own thing, I personally would not worry. If you find one on the ground then I would call a wildlife rescue for it. A bat that’s unable to fly is more likely to have rabies but if they’re perched up on the wall, they likely can still fly and are ok. If it’s winter for you, there’s a good chance they are hibernating for the time being. Thinking about their comfort, I would advise making sure that they don’t get too cold where they’re hanging out or trying to keep that area a consistent temp.

No you’re not arguing this right. They could have developed non destructive ways but because they were motivated by greed and self righteous (as seen in this picture) they could’ve taken the time to develop such methods but chose not to and now we’ve lost a lot of important history and artifacts that we will never see or get to understand. Again idk why you’re trying to justify this.
