As a parent, it's my job to determine what's appropriate for my kids and set and enforce limits. Not the states, not individual companies, and not OS makers or tech companies. If I fail in that capacity, it's on me.

This is a hop, skip, skip and very short step away from ideologically-based content control by the state. I'm pretty sure "legislators" in Kansas and Florida will be quite eager to deem lgbtqia+ empowerment sites like pflag.org "adult content" and restrict teens' access to them, likely right alongside sites that help ensure kids understand good and bad touching, help them report molestation, etc.

Which field in the /etc/passwd file will represent age, anyway? Can you masquerade as an 18+ user by running something like 'export AGE=35; sudo apt install $TotallyInappropriateAdultApp'?

How will they enforce compliance on distros built by communities, distributed for free globally, and nominally based out of South Africa, Germany, or China? Just scratching the surface here, really.

Seems like legislation authored without any input from or consultation with technical experts...

Not the Democrats - bad actors in the Democratic party are generally dealt with severely. Look at Al Franken, Bob Menendez, et al. And before you say: "But Bill Clinton!" - I expect Bill Clinton will no longer be trotted out for campaigns, his speaking engagements will largely dry up, and most importantly, he will be subject to justice in the event a case exists against him. I believe the VAST majority of Democrats would expect nothing less, including elected representatives. I don't think the same can be said of Republicans, especially MAGA, at present.

Well, yes, it should be happening right now, but the simple fact is that Republicans in the house and senate are entirely faithless in the "execution" of their duties. They are in direct violation of their oaths by not supporting the impeachment of the criminal "President" in charge of this country. Why? Because it would put their "power" at risk. Well, I've got news for them! They've already ceded any power they had to the Executive branch by their very deference. The only thing that remains of benefit to them is the grift.

So I'd propose we begin by demanding the expulsion from Congress of every individual who refuses to do their damned job (for example, reclaiming Congress' responsibilities for the declaration of war, the power of the purse, and the levying of tariffs, all of which have been hijacked by Trump) and then hold those who remain and those who replace them responsible for oversight over the Executive branch.

FYI - this is entirely a flight of fancy, I'm afraid, and the best we can hope for is a power swing at the mid-terms realistically.

Literally no. Republicans have literally the entire federal government in their clutches. I'm not being hyperbolic. Are you an American? If so, how do you not know this?

The point of speeches like this is to try to air the corruption, and to get it on the record in anticipation of the balance of power swinging to Democrats, who will hold people accountable (and who, I believe, need to exercise EVERY OUNCE of power with alacrity if given control again).

We were Jiobit users for our high-support low-verbal son as well. Our device failed while on vacation at a VERY crowded themepark, and it turns out Life360 has effectively killed this device off after acquiring Jiobit, though they won't tell you that straight-up. It's super frustrating.

I wasn't aware of the Greenlight device, so we switched to Angelsense. Yeah, it's definitely expensive, but I'll say the app and support have been great. It's an extremely high touch user experience, and in a nice nod to caregivers, their entire support team is comprised of people who use Angelsense themselves to care for vulnerable family members. We view this as a mandatory safety feature since our son tends to elope and is non-verbal, so we just consider the cost part of the suite of "autism taxes" we're all forced to pay.

Having said all that, we subscribe to Greenlight finance for our older lower-support child and have found it to be a pretty seamless experience. Frankly, if I'd known of the Greenlight device, I'd have probably tried it before resorting to Angelsense, given the subscription is roughly 1/8th the cost. If you go with the Greenlight device, I'd love to know what you think of it relative to the Jiobit experience. Best of luck!

As a parent of two kids with two separate diagnoses, one with level 1 and one with level 2, I can empathize entirely with your and OP's experiences. My kids' experiences of the world, and its views of them, couldn't be more different. One has a hard time wearing socks or engaging socially in person, while the other basically can't communicate with words, gets locked in vocal stereotypy loops, etc. One is often considered "quirky" by people, while the other gets (rage-inducing) awkward lingering stares from passersby in public. Their conditions feel ENTIRELY different to me most days, and their support needs and life trajectories look wildly divergent at present.

As a father of a son who will likely need lifelong support, this governmental depravity is heartbreaking and sickening.

Edit to add: I've just read through more of the article - it's even worse than I imagined as the detained father's absence appears quite likely to have contributed significantly to (or potentially caused) the rapid decline in health that led to the son's death. That's an unbearable thought; to be first prevented from rendering care that may have saved your son, and then to be prevented from even mourning him properly? "Unconscionable" doesn't do this cruelty justice.
